Opening Night Thoughts

Who the heck is D'Nika Romero?

Who'd have thought Jamie Carey would lay a Hoopla! egg and stink up my squad with -2 points? That's NEGATIVE 2! Actually, J. Carey was a typo. It was supposed to read D. Romero...or L. Koehn...or M. Villaroel...or...

I thought MU would make a better showing in Manhattan.

The CU/KSU matchup Saturday looks to be a good one, eh? I think we've underestimated the Buffs so far. And K-State really hasn't been talked about that much since the opening loss to Purdue.

KMR called out her guards after the game in Waco. She said the team's 1st half play was "pathetic" and it starts with the guards.

By the way, Stacy, have you been holding out on us during the non-con? 26 pts, what a start to her final Big XII go-round.

I'd forgotten how exciting opening night is.

She's from Lubbock or somewhere around there. I think she's a transfer from A&M CC to A&M.

I'm sure they would have but starting point guard Latoya Bond had her foot in a protective "boot" is injured and did not play. Mizzou really missed her. I'm sure it won't be this easy for the Wildcats when the rematch comes in Columbia.

Romero's dad runs the Lady Hawks AAU club in Lubbock, I think. Went to Coronado HS in Lubbock.

(Edit: I had the order backwords): She started out at Texas A&M-Kingsville (Div 2) and then transferred to a Junior College in West Texas.

The girl must love basketball because she keeps getting better and transfering to better programs. Gotta admire her perserverance.

ok, that explains the paraphanelia signed to her by Sheryl Swoopes. I've seen her photo over the past 3 years at the Lady Hawks website.

What is ironic is that three games ago she did not even get into the game (she was only ave 4 minutes before that). The only reason he started Romero was to give a wake up call to his 2 2-guards (Castille and Garrison)as per his press conference last week. I do not think Blair thought she was going to go out and knock down 18 points. So, he had to start her the next game (OSU). Then she buries 27 points. Blair what were you thinking three games ago. I know Coach. Romero has always been a scorer. Everyone knows she can knock down the shot. Her problem has always been her defense. Blair said he has not been comfortable with her defense so therefore he had not played her a great deal. Blair is taking TAMU back to the basics. Defense wins ball games. I think TAMU had forgotten that over the last few years.

Sheryl Swoopes is a very good friend of ours. She lived with us for 2 years her and D'Nika are like sisters.... And yes D,Nika had committed to A&M for a while, Out of high school she had committed to A&M kingsville and i would not let her change her committment after Texas A&M offer her, so then when she was not happy at all at Kingsville she was going to transfer and if we went to the D-1 level we would have to sit out a year and she did not want to sit out that long so we went juco and kept her committment to Texas A&M.....And that where she is today...

thanks for the info, watchdogg.

And way to go, D'Nika. It amazes me what some of these young women can do when given the chance to step up.

Important road win for the Buffs. They are playing with a lot of confidence this season, which is something that doesn’t show up in the stats. In fact this team plays with ore confidence than last season’s. Having four seniors doesn’t hurt either.

The Buffs were out rebounded early in the season, even in their victories. They have made a determined effort to improve and it paid off in Waco.

Kate Fagan played 40 minutes. Ceal Barry needs to find someone to give her a few minutes of rest a game, or she’ll get worn out in conference play. The most likely candidate is freshman Leslie Howard.
