Sounds like a blood bath
On Chynna Brown:
She's playing her best basketball game. I try to remind her, as well as the rest of them, that they have played very well in this building. Chynna did a great job and was off to her best start with 8 points and 4 rebounds, which is great to see. She's got a slight concussion and a slight cut over the eye which we had to get sewn up. I haven't had a talk with her about Wednesday, but she's tough, so I expect that if she can play, we hope that she is back. We'll let the doctors determine that.
And I bet no one got called for a foul...

Just a note: as at least one admonition in the ref's training info says: If it isn't a foul and a player gets hurt, it still isn't a foul. I didn't see the game so don't know if a foul should have been called, but ....

As well as I remember, a foul was called against Tech and Texas went to the free throw line.

Your memory is correct, '79. Cokie, during the process of grabbing the rebound, elbowed her in the face. But Brown was the one who was called for the foul, and Cokie went to the line for free throws.
In my book, that's when you know the day isn't going your way.

Essentially the same thing happened yesterday in the Baylor's men's game and Lomers didn't get the call. That changed the whole game around A&M and likely cost the Bears a road win. Elbows, when they aren't intentional are just a part of the game. The bigs hit the other players in the head with their elbows just because of their stature from time to time.

That's officiating the Austin way! Always has been and always will be.

I rarely post here anymore. But its nice to see how some things never change - no matter what, Tech fans see some conspiracy behind any Texas win.
On a serious note, I wish the Tech program a strong recovery. I haven't been to the rivalry game in Austin in a while and it was sad not to see the Raider fans there, not to feel the same pressure from years ago. I'll never forget some of those game in Austin in the 90's and early 2000's.

Just an innocent bystander here, but Cokie did indeed put Brown out of the game with a well-placed elbow. I remember watching another game on TV where Cokie was called twice for putting a shoulder into the player she was screening. She's coming off as the 'horns enforcer.

Austin officiating
I find it interesting to say that officiating had anything to do this with this game. I could definitely say the same thing about Lubbock where just last year Kathleen Nash was called for a PHANTOM offensive off-the-ball foul while merely walking downcourt and Murphree flopped as Carla Cortijo hit what would have been the WINNING 3 point basket.
As far as Cokie goes, yes she is very physical. However, that was not an intentional elbow and to make that assumption based on one play is ridiculous at best. I watched her in high school and was very impressed with her skill-set. She is going to be very very good.
I applaud Curry for doing what she did with Mallard. I happen to think Curry is a very good coach who has just not gotten the type of players she needs in Lubbock.
We are now playing our best basketball of the year and hopefully can keep this up and make a good run to the tourney. Coach G's system is a thing of beauty at times and we are SO lucky to have her!!!

IMO, the elbow by Reed was accidental. I was surprised that a foul was called at all, especially on Brown. They showed a replay once or twice of the play.
Congrats to the Horns, they played a good game. Arriaran had one of her better all around games.
Tech needs to regroup. I never thought I would see them in the cellar of the Big XII.

I agree on all points...players who rebound are taught to do that to keep the offensive player from getting their hands on the ball.
However, Jane Appel recently got tossed from a game for a very similar move. I've seen the video, I didn't see a reason to give her a flagrant foul much less toss her. And it was not different with Brown and Reed. I did not think Brown fouled Reed however.
Good coaches work with what they have and make it work. That's part of being a good coach. As much as players have to adapt to you, you have to adapt to the players you recruit. (Note: There's only 1 player Murphree - a HS AA) that was recruited by Sharp).
It felt to me yesterday like the team as a whole gave up on Curry - there were some decent individual performances, but the team work was really poor. As much as I hate losing, I really don't mind when we get out played beyond our talent and capacity or because the other team is on a roll...that was not the case yesterday. Taking nothing away from Texas, they played a good game. But Tech played with desperation and that is what really saddens me.

I would have to agree Bballgirl - Tech did play with a desperation almost. As big of a rivalry as it always was, I was always SO impressed when I went to Lubbock and the place was packed with fans supporting the womens' game. I always used to tell people what a great facility you had and how supportive your fans were. We never had crowds like that in Austin.
It seems to me there are several things going on and hopefully Tech can get them figured out and regroup.

I agree Reed did not intentionally foul Brown. However, I do question why a foul was called on Brown. Really a strange thing. But, let's admit, stranger things have happened in Big 12 WBB games. As physical as WBB has gotten these days I think we may see more than less of this. By the time the game was over Tech was down to 5 players. I am proud that they never quit, they did keep trying and that kind of effort from that many freshmen and sophmores will lead to good things for Tech.

You definitely have some very good young players. That Brown is going to be something special. And they definitely did not quit.

TEXAS QUOTES
Head Coach Gail Goestenkors
Opening statement: I'm very pleased overall with the way we played. I give credit to Texas Tech. They fought. They're undermanned right now, but they played hard. It was a battle the entire game, because they did battle. I give a lot of credit to Coach Curry for what she did. I told her before the game, I said, "I'm proud of you. You're sticking to your guns. You're doing things the right way." One thing I noticed through all the tape I was watching is her team plays so hard. I told my team I said, "You're going to be in for a battle and for a war." We were. I'm proud of the way we responded, especially in the second half. I felt that we played with greater energy and intensity in the second half. And we're on to the next game. It just never ends.
