NEW YORK, Aug. 28, 2007 - Forward Plenette Pierson of the Detroit Shock has been named WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year, the league announced today. Pierson received 36 votes from a national panel of sportswriters and broadcasters to earn the inaugural award. A pair of guards, Kara Lawson of the Sacramento Monarchs and Jia Perkins of the Chicago Sky, tied for second with six votes apiece.

In her fifth year in the WNBA and third with the Shock, Pierson consistently provided a spark off the bench and helped Detroit to the league's best record (24-10). She experienced a breakout year as the Shock's sixth woman, setting career highs in points (396), points per game (11.6), rebounds per game (5.8), assists per game (1.7), blocks (29), field-goal percentage (.478), field goals made (149), free-throw percentage (.754) and free-throws made (98).

A member of Detroit's WNBA championship team last season, Pierson secured a more prominent role in 2007, averaging nearly 10 more minutes, and was one of five Shock players to average double digits in the scoring column. Her career highs in scoring and rebounding also ranked the Kingwood, Texas, native among the WNBA's top 25 in both categories.

Despite coming off the bench in all 34 games, Pierson led the Shock in points five times, rebounds six times and assists four times. She also reached double figures in points 22 times, second only to Deanna Nolan and Katie Smith on the squad, and accumulated four double-doubles, doubling her previous career high in that category.

When Detroit faced off against Sacramento on May 19, Pierson scored a season-high 22 points, including her 1,000th career point in the WNBA.

Originally selected by the Mercury with the fourth overall pick in the 2003 WNBA Draft, Pierson was acquired by the Shock in exchange for Andrea Stinson and a 2006 second-round draft pick on July 29, 2005.

In honor of being named the Sixth Woman of the Year, Pierson will receive $5,000 and a specially-designed trophy from Tiffany & Co.

If you haven't seen them yet, there are some really awesome videos on the WNBA web site. They are listed under the news and features from the video link, and they have both the awards press conference and also a tremendous accolade from Plenette's teammates and coach. Some truly remarkable things said by and about a truly remarkable player!

Pierson might not have gotten the discipline she so dearly needed at the time of her season-long suspension. Marsha Sharp though made a decision that night, however misunderstood at the time by some, that saved Pierson’s career in my opinion. To be sure, Plenette has made herself into a very successful young woman, but without the tough-love exhibited by a coach that cared more about the person in the long-run that wins in the short-term, Plenette got a chance to turn her life around that many young people never get, because they’re never held accountable because of their talent in sports or some other field. We could go on for days with examples, but you know the stories. As I watch Pierson now, I take great pleasure in having had a front-row seat to watch how powerful the right adult guidance can play a role in a person’s life. Pierson winning the 6th-Woman of the Year Award didn’t start this year or last with Detroit. It started on a cold night in New Mexico on a Greyhound Bus.

Wow, yes he did. What an excellent comment.

That fateful season, Hyatt and Coach Sharp would do her TV show dialogue together, sitting in two chairs around the lane on the USA court facing the nearest endline, with most of the full court in view behind them.

At the goal on the other end of the court, there was Plenette, alone but for a student helping her rebound the ball, shooting baskets in the background all during the show. It was a powerful scene. A suspended player, not allowed to be with the team, but clearly not out of the "picture".

Sharp and Pierson took a bad situation and made it a turning point.

a truly remarkable player!

Indeed.

What I remember about that season was Plenette coming to the games...sitting in the next section over from us. Singing & clapping along with the fight song, doing the guns up at all the right places. Leaning forward with her eyes focused on the court and sometimes a few tears

I very much wanted to go over and hug her and tell her to hang in there. But I didn't want to draw any attention, I didn't want to intrude on her privacy.

It's a pleasure to see the strong, confident woman she's become.
