Van Chancellor will be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in September.

Chancellor, who also attended Monday's announcement, was the women's coach at Mississippi from 1978-97 before leading the Houston Comets to the first four WNBA championships from 1997 through the 2000 season. He also coached the 2004 U.S. gold

The more I think about him becoming the HC at LSU, the more sense it seems to make. I think he would be terrific, though I'm sure it would be hard for him to go up against his Ole Miss Rebels. And I wouldn't expect any freshmen to get much playing time in the future. ;)

It's sounding more and more like he's the man for the Tigers.....

Yes, Skip Bertman said they don't want "an ultra young coach," but 63? (I'm 61, by the way, and were I a coach, couldn't imagine taking on the Lady Tigers, with all the pitfalls remaining from Pokeygate).

Yeah, I think Chancellor fits exactly what LSU thinks they want. He's 'mature', experienced and a well-known name. He won't need time for a learning curve. His own record is accomplished enough that he won't be distracted by the leftover issues following Pokey. He has shown that he can work with players of all stripes so any lingering 'us' vs 'them' issues won't be a big factor. And, highly important, imo, he's one of the 'guys' who the LSU admin will feel comfortable with. They won't have to be wondering if they got another potentially explosive situation on their hands. Plus if he can retain Starkey as the chief X & Os guy, something which I think LSU would like to see, then he's left to do more of the 'other' duties that head coaches must deal with, without draining his own energy.

In short, he can fill a distinct need by serving for a few years until the program gets back to a more stabilized level, keep it running on a high level and then give LSU more time to find someone who is ready to lead it in a few years on a longer term basis.

EXACTLY!

Now I don't have to put up my version.

Ditto, me too BearLady.

And I agree that if Van Chance were to decide to leave after 2 or 3 years, this would make "stepping in" an even more positive thing for both parties.

I was always impressed with the rapport he had with his Houston players.

Bertman said LSU has yet to interview any coaching candidates, and that the school won't force the new coach to hire any of the old staff. But he said the team would have input in who is hired, and that he wants to find somebody "who enhances the memory of Sue Gunter."

Does Van Chance "enhance" the memory of Sue Gunter?
