Higgins and Plumley shoot from long range using the same logic as Willie Sutton, who when asked why he robbed banks said, "Because that's where the money is.” Higgins and Plumley shoot deep balls because that's where they get open shots.

The inconsistency of officiating in women's basketball is a little maddening. One game, you get away with murder, the next game you can't breathe on someone.

Plumley's been stricken with Britney Brown's prematurely-picking-up-the-dribble disease.

It's ugly, but I'd be much sadder if I was a Cyclone tonight.

If we were playing Maryland right now, we'd be down by about 20. Marquette keeps saving us by turning the ball over.

OU up by 4, 2:30ish left to play in the half.

OU manages to lead by 10 at the half, 29-19. The 10 point lead is mostly to the stinky play of Marquette than to anything good by the Sooners (although I'm glad to see Ashley Paris finally taking over the defensive boards, and Leah Rush is the only one to have knocked the lid off the basket).

By comparison, Iowa State has scored 27 points in their half, but Georgia, which is not playing stinkily, has 51. All I'm saying is, this is a pretty bad half for OU, but they're still getting lucky.

OU played solid defense, which rattled a pretty good Marquette team. I'd say that's favorable. We sat Courtney for a lot of minutes, couldn't hit the broad side of a barn for most of the half, and went into the locker room with a 10 point lead.

I could imagine much worse scenarios.

Forget the first round mega-blowouts of hapless 16 seeds by #1's, give me a good old-fashioned stomping of a team that came in as the Big East runnerups with a 26-6 record, a recent loss to UConn by 4 points, and no losses by more than 10.

Statement #1 - and a BIG ONE - of the second round.

I really don't think Marquette could have even done that well in the Big East if they played all season like they have been playing tonight. They've got to be playing exceptionally abnormally. Of course OU's better than average defense tonight had a little bit to do with that. (Not in the first half though...)

Thanks. I knew it was a bit of a longshot for MU to beat OK tonight but it was hard to see them implode like that. Lots of stupid decisions by MU tonight and it made me wonder at times how they were able to win 26 games this season. But I don't mean to diminish what Oklahoma did tonight - they played very well and made Marquette's inside game very ineffective.

Good luck to OU the rest of the way...

I've watched way too many OU games this season to get to hyped one way or the other in the first half. This team could make you pull all your hair out though.

I also don't think we got the Marquette that played 2 weeks ago, or the Marquette that played through January and February....

The way a team plays in the NCAA's can be so different, and you just can measure heart, will, or want. And you can never imagine how a team will play when they think they may be playing their last game. On the flip side, experience matters when you get to this tourney. I just think there are a lot of variables that come into play this time of year. That OU/Stanford game that Ms Proud Sooner mentioned was horrible. Couldn't hit anything, couldn't guard anyone.

If I'm Tennessee I don't know if I would want to know I had Marist waiting for me in Death Valley, Ohio if I beat Pittsburgh on their home court.

Now, back to Marquette: you don't win 26 games if you aren't pretty good. It was good to see Kelly Lam out on the court, I'm surprised the announcers didn't pick up on that.

Good luck to the Marquette Seniors and to the girls' headed back next season.

Survive and advance. Survive and advance. Nothing else matters right now.

Nice win by the Sooners today but sounds like Marquette stunk up the place rather than us soundly defeating them.

Looks like the Big 12 is going to end up with same results as last year in the tourney. As much as I'd like to see us win, I don't think it's gonna happen against Maryland. We're playing better (or we were before this week) but still not good enough to be an elite team. Maryland will not miss all those open shots and our defense is not a "stopper" defense.

I also think Baylor will not make it past Sweet 16 if they win tomorrow. They aren't as good as last year. And the rest of the Big 12 is already out. Other than Iowa St, no Big 12 team got ousted by a super team either.

ACC is looking dominant and they'll have two teams in Final Four and maybe three again!

Oh well, we get to look forward to next year!

KUM BA YAH!

If Maryland makes it past Mississippi, I think we can take them. CP is a different level of force than they have played against, and they aren't shooting like they should. Unless they raise their game a notch, we will dominate inside, and they aren't a superb team outside. They have a lot of very good players. But, nobody has stepped up to be a great player. I thought Coleman would.

We have the ability to beat Maryland, or anyone else in this cotton-pickin tournament. But the switch is not always flipped to the "on" position for the Sooners. Knowing the only thing standing between yourself and victory is yourself is both comforting and irritating.

BINGO! You are an excellent diagnostician - that is exactly the queazy feeling I have been having all year and didn't know how to describe!
But the there are three ingredients that the Sooners have this year that they didn't have last year, and it's a huge difference. First, since the stretch when OU lost three out of four and fell out of first place in the Big 12, they've consistently played stifling interior defense throughout the entire 10 game winning streak.

Second, the injections of Jenna and Amanda into the starting lineup gives OU a much better mix of power and athleticism, and as a result were are shortening the opponent's shot clock significantly. This results in the other team feeling that they aren't quite in control, and causes them to rush shots and not complete their offense. That's why on the perimeter and in the open court both players are contributing so much that it scarcely matters whether they are scoring or not.

And third, while last year the switch would turn off and OU was helpless to turn it on again, this year we've been able to find our way across the dark room to flip the switch back on again. And since with defense and an ever-present Courtney or Ashley (or both) on the interior who are at least going to get some scoring and rebounds, we have the ability to stay in games while the switch is in the off position. A good example of that was when OU started 11-0 against ISU, and then let the Cyclones light us up, mostly from outside, in a 35-16 run. Because we found the switch again, we were able to heat back up both outside and inside and eventually pull away for the win.

We can do that against anybody this year, and not just the ISU's and Marquette's of the world.

"Our defense voided us when our shots weren't falling from the perimeter," said Oklahoma coach Sherri Coale, who switched to a zone defense during the first half. "Our holding them was a lot of us and little bit of them."

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/032007dnspoouwomen.30e1fa7.html
On the next opponent, be it Mississippi or Maryland:
"I think a lot of people would be scared for us or nervous, whether they're fans or whoever," OU's Ashley Paris said. "But honestly, we're so excited. We're going to have to beat these teams to win a national championship regardless of when we play them."
http://www.newsok.com/article/3029136/
"I was all pouty, watching other teams beat people by 40 and we just barely survived our first-round game,” Coale said.

"‘Why can't we do that?'”

"I didn't really expect it to happen tonight, because we had so much respect for Marquette,” Coale said. "But I think it's a reflection of when every kid gives you what they bring.

"Nobody was necessarily fabulous. It wasn't Courtney's best game. It wasn't Chelsi's best game. It wasn't Jenna's best game. As a cumulative performance, I couldn't be more pleased."

http://web.newsok.com/article/3029134/

"There is as much pressure on the post defender as there was previously,” said Coale, referring to Ashley's presence instead of Courtney's. "There's not a big drop-off.”

It's not just Monday. During OU's 10-game winning streak, Ashley Paris has averaged 8.8 points and 7.3 rebounds.

"When Ashley is good, we just don't lose,” Coale said. "That's been the case all season long. We just have so many weapons when she factors in and is aggressive getting rebounds and scoring points.

"We're pretty hard to beat.”

With the graduation of Leah Rush, we lose our line of the Caton Hill/Leah Rush kind of player, undersized blue collar forced to play the center kind of kids.

So, I'm going from favorite of the "power forward" to this little guard, she's the bomb. ;)

With Monday's game safely in hand, Oklahoma fans got a long look at talented freshman Nyeshia Stevenson.
"You can see that she is a talent in the making,” OU coach Sherri Coale said.

Her performance – both Monday and in recent practices – might have earned Stevenson more playing time. And perhaps in more critical situations.

The 5-foot-9 guard drew some oohs and ahhs from the crowd during a nine-minute stint to finish the Sooners' win over Marquette.

Stevenson scored six points, with three rebounds, an assist and two turnovers. "She's just so different than anybody else that we've had, really,” Coale said.

Paris twins should both be starters
http://www.statesman.com/sports/content/sports/stories/other/03/20/20golden.html

The best way to stop Courtney Paris is to sit Courtney Paris.

Oklahoma coach Sherri Coale had to do just that when her All-America center was saddled with two personal fouls with 11:53 left in Monday's NCAA second-rounder against Marquette. The three dozen Marquette fans erupted in cheers as Paris walked to the bench.

On most teams, losing your best player for what basically amounts to 12 minutes of a half would be a big problem.

Not so at OU.

Coale has the biggest luxury since power windows sitting four seats down from her on the bench. Ashley Paris can start on 90 percent of the teams playing in the NCAA tournament. She is one of the 10 best post players in the country and does not even start on her own team.

Speaking of Abi, I think if she improves her fitness level we are going to see a whole lot of her next year. I was absolutely stunned by her excellent overall technical skills, I'd figured she'd be a project at least until her junior year. But from what I've seen this year, the ONLY thing that's holding her back is her overall level of fitness.
