Did you see Courtney pad her rebounding stats. ;) I don't think I have ever seen a player get so many of her own misses back.

Having Jenna out hurts. OU's offense just doesn't have the same flow.

Man, Baylor came to PLAY tonight! If OU keeps turning the ball over, we're going to be in a hole fast.

OK, things are looking better for OU.

Baylor's TOs are helping us quite a bit now.

4th foul on Morrow at around the six minute mark. It looked like she just got Rush on the elbow. That has to hurt.

Morrow gets a frustration Technical, and is outta there.

That Jenna drive was only possible because Allison was so convinced that Courtney was going to do something that she didnt leave the double team and left the lane wide open.

The T was for gently elbowing an official after a strange hug on Leah Rush's rebound.

The 1st T occurred as the player was walking away.

Don't T her up because she doesn't want to stop and chat with you.

Congrats OU!

Gotta love Plumley. Leah Rush, I don't know--I do think there is a reason that she is always involved in the scuffles. Morrow's foul against Leah on the 3 was bogus. I will probably be flamed for this, but I'm not a huge Leah Rush fan.

Morrow had a great game, it looked like she was really frustrated. But, that's no excuse for poor sportsmanship.

She did sort of shove the ref away...not really an elbow, but a gentle shove as if to say "Get the heck away from me!" and who knows if she said anything?

The hug foul on Leah was cheap...almost like a body tackle.

Dale8R

I saw it a little differently on the replays. Morrow grabbed Rush in a bear hug, then gave her a bit of a push as she was breaking from it. Rush was upset and backed away. The referee may have thought there would be a confrontation and interposed herself in between with a semi-restraining touch on Morrow. The second contact was unclear as to what happened.

It's OK wildcatfan. I agree with you. She is one of my least favorite players ever. I don't think Morrow's foul on Rush was nearly as bad as Abi Olajuwon flipping Taylor Hardeman over her back near the end of the game in Stillwater.

Plumley is my MVP. In fact, she and Medders are the MVP's of this tourney so far.

Morrow had an excellent game except for that last play. She got T'd up because she bumped the official and I'm sure she was frustrated. She's got a gorgeous shot.

Yep...Leah is always involved in the scuffles. As swok says...she'd compete hard at tiddly winks.

Allison played her heart out.

What's with Darrett tripping Plumley at the end - down by 10, 2 secs to play...do you have to trip and then mouth? Poor sportsmanship imo

I don't lipread well, but something was said during that "hug" -- not by Morrow -- and back-to-back fouls against Morrow for contact with Rush must've been frustrating.

Especially as the one where Morrow "fouled" Rush shooting that ruptured-duck three-point attempt was a totally bogus call.

Geeze, I'm defending a Bear ... signs of the apocalypse everywhere.

Congratulations to Bill Fennelly, the wild man of improvised defenses, and to Sherri Coale, the architect of back-to-back finals appearances and back-to-back Big-12 regular-season crowns.

Exactly. Classless IMO. And to think KM was upset about a shot as time expired to prevent a TO by a freshman the last time they met.

I can see how opposing teams wouldn't like Leah. She plays hard and is extremely competitive, which sometimes gets out of control. If I'm playing, I definitely want her on MY team as I sure wouldn't want to play against her.

Dale8R
03-08-2007, 10:52 PM
I saw that. The game was effectively over and Plumley was just dribbling out the clock and WHAM, here she comes. Frustration gets the better of players sometimes.

Interesting point. What would have happened if Plumley had not thrown the ball away with the clock winding down earlier? Time was running out, but there were a few seconds more on the game clock than on the shot clock.

OK, so replace hard with physical, and add emotional.
Whatever.

The point is she is one who is usually guarding the opposing team's best player, and she doesn't let down on defense. She's rough, tumble, physical, tough as nails and sometimes gets carried away.
I'm glad she plays for the team I cheer for.
She also had a beautiful baseline fade-away jumper. :D

I was really proud of Jessica tonight. She has had this talent all year, and I wondered why she hadn't taken over. Maybe it was the presence of Mosby. I just wish it hadn't come against us. But, it should be the foundation of the fact that she is the replacement for Sophia.

Jenna is getting a lot of attention, but Courtney had 20-14-4, Ashley had 13-8-2, Amanda had 2-6-2, and Chelsi hit eight straight when they were needed. There were a lot of heroines.

The foul on the 3 pointer was bogus.

The "bear" hug was a legit foul....and the extra shove could have been T'd....but it wasn't.

Morrow had already turned and was walking away when Canter grabbed Morrow and she then swatted her hand away...still while having her back to the official.

Rush is a warrior. It's 4 years later and I still don't know how Tech let her get away.

The foul on the 3 pointer was bogus.

Granted, I was fighting fatigue and my eyes are tired and watery, but with my 32 inch TV, I couldn't tell on the replay if there was contact or not because it was filmed from behind Morrow--with Leah facing the camera. Morrow's hand was in front of Leah's, but my lack of depth perception made it impossible for me to tell if there was contact.

If there was contact on the three pointer foul, it was just fingertips after the shot already left her hands. In other words, not worthy of a call.

As for technical #1, I think the ref perceived the walking away and gentle removing of ref hands from Morrow's body as a major sign of disrespect. I'm not sure it was anything more than frustration at having just picked up a fifth foul. If it was out of line, it was only just a little bit.

As for technical #2, I don't know what happened or what was said, but it was sure dumb to wait a couple of seconds before coming at Plumley hard. If you're going to challenge and stay tight until the buzzer, don't half-ass it. Go for the steal on the inbounds pass. Force the point guard to be uncomfortable like you've been doing the whole game.

Is Dee Canter a Big XII official? Why was she there tonight? Shouldn't she be calling one of the mens games? I thought she did the worse job on the court tonight. Not having anything to do with the technicals, I just thought she felt the home crowd pressure tonight. That what home court advantage is all about. Congrats Sooners on the win. I sure hope we can get multiple teams to make it very far in the NCAA Tournament. :)

Especially when you touch an official, SW, like Morrow did on the last one. And Kim knew it. She may have disagreed with the foul call but it was clear she did not like how her player responded. There were no words between Kim and Sherri tonight, which is what we like to see.

Jessica Morrow had a HUGE game. Two really incredibly dumb fouls on her part to foul 3 point shooters. She was so critical to the Baylor offense today, it would have been better to allow those. Chelsi wasn't really hitting shots at that point.

And I hated to see such an incredible game capped off like it was.

I wasn't sure why Baylor was guarding those final 10 seconds. Tisdale poked her hand in there and Darrett said something. So, Darrett wasn't even the one called for that final foul, just the one picking up the technical for saying something.

I'm pretty sure OU intended to allow the clock to run out.

Say what you want about Leah Rush, but she she was guarding Mosby tonite and Mosby finished with 9 points.

Indeed Morrow had a GREAT game. I kept saying, can't we defend her? It's too bad she lost her cool down the stretch.

But Leah was awesome on Mosby, hence my POG. Many other players had outstanding contributions, but Leah's defense was the key to the entire game. Will we miss her next year or what?

It's sad that Kim Mulkey can't act like an adult. She's following in the footsteps of the almighty Bob Knight. Have you or would you ever see Sherri Coale turn around and punch her chair? Have you or would you ever see Jody Conradt turn around and punch her chair? Have you or would you ever see Marsha Sharp, Connie Yori, Cindy Stein, Kathy McConnell-Miller, Deb Patterson, etc., etc., etc. turn around and punch her (their) chair? NO! Kim's a great coach but she needs to grow up and act like an adult!

Regarding the technicals, I think the players act out as their coach does in a lot of cases and it looks like that's what happened here. Kinda like the kids seeing their parents do something stupid or dumb and then they mimick the parents and the parents wonder where in the hell did they pick that up from.

It's great for all coaches to be motivated and fired up, almost all of them are, but for the most part they don't act like a "spoiled brat". How many years will it be before we see Kim throw a chair across the court?

I just finished watching the game. I didn't think "Morrow's behavior" was flagrant, unfortunate that she shrugged off Kanter, who must have taken that as a sign of disrespect, but not flagrant.

The TV didn't show what Darrett had said or how she may have said it. It does show Kim asking her, "what did you say?", and then her asking the "governor" what Darrett had said....

did he answer her?

I been warnin' you all that it's trouble with the governor comes to town :D Actually, he looked a little to me like he might need his ticker checked.

I know we all find our own reasons to complain about the officiating, but I'm pretty sure that there is not a single soul on Hoopscoop who has one ounce of ability to change what and how and when fouls are called. Just something to keep in mind.

I just watched the end of the game, too. And though the camera doesn't catch it clearly, it looked like the "gentle nudge" was done with an elbow to the ribs. The "T" came immediately on that - it was quite obviously in reaction.

The last foul was indeed stupid and had to be called. I don't know what was said to get that technical, but I thought the game would have been better served to ignore it.

Fantastic effort by both teams. Everyone watching certainly got their money's worth. OU has raised it's defensive intensity considerably from mid-season, and Baylor looked better all around. Morrow was the player of the game; that's about as unstoppable as I've seen a player get. OU switched their best defenders from Moseby to Morrow, and all that did was slow her down a little.

And if OU goes anywhere in the NCAA's Plumley is definitely the leading candidate for the Junie B. Jones award!

I know when Kim has been in our arena, she has acted like a spoiled brat and she should have been T'd up several times, but wasn't. She hated it when lowly CU beat her team in Ceal Barry's final home game.

Kim peves alot of opponent fans with her antics. Yeah so she's not so humble nor gracious as a Marsha Sharp, Ceal Barry or Jody Conradt during the game. Nope..her zeal and drive to win creates a little fiery horrid monster to some of my fellow Big XII fans. But heck yanno after the contest is over Kim's a pretty good ole gal who is very gracious in her praise of her players and opponents as well. You'd be hard pressed to find the same negative irritants about Kim after a game that drive many of ya nuts during a contest. Ask any BU fan about her post game interviews. So maybe that makes her two faced? Heck I like both faces and in my opinion that fiery little pistol ya'll like to rag on cuz she don't act right was a key factor in bringing a NC to Waco and the Big XII. She doesn't seem to scare off all the talent and BU seems to have recruited well enough to keep BU competitive in the conferance for a few more years. Geez I guess I just love that brat.

You'll never accuse the Big 12 of being boring, that's for sure.

All these personalities give people something to scream about besides the X's & O's.

Especially when you touch an official, SW, like Morrow did on the last one.

True, but it really seemed "the offical" initiated the contact with Morrow, so I found that unfair. One of the announcers tried to 'splain that away by saying Dee was trying to keep the players seperated. At that point they had already gone their own seperate ways and were at least 10 feet away from each other. Bad call.

T #2. The ref should have at least told the Coach what the player said. The replays sure made it look like they had no answer (or the one they gave was not T-worthy). It just didn't look like the ref provided any explanation on the verbals.

Fun, fun game to watch though!!!! I heart March.

Rush and Allison are both very tough and scrappy, but it seems like Allison has brought a "cleaner" game to date, IMHO. Glad to see Leah's elbows graduate. :p

..her zeal and drive to win creates a little fiery horrid monster to some of my fellow Big XII fans. ...Geez I guess I just love that brat.:) :) :) If she is your brat, you gotta love her! Actually, I like her, most of the time. But on a serious note? Looking the last couple of minutes of the game last night, I had to wonder if Kim's (exuberance? demonstrativeness? frenzy?) might have lead some of her kids to play with more emotion than thought/calculation. When we came home, we replayed the taped last minutes of the game because in the midst of it, with the crowd noise and emotion, it all seemed to run together. It didn't make any more sense seeing it for the second time.

I did notice that the commentator said something I had heard them say before to the effect that Kim's sideline behavior she thought was needed to provide passion for her young team. I made the assumption (because this was the second time I've heard almost the same words from an announcer) that this was maybe "spin" coming from the pre-game time spent with the team and/or media relations folks. My memory is not perfect but I don't seem to remember her acting terrible differently with her Final Four team so I don't know where this "new" interpretation is coming from.

I sure can't fault her passion, her coaching, her recruiting, etc. I love her dry humor. But it does seem to me that the passion sometimes becomes something more negative than necessary.

I know one thing for sure: if she is a “brat” she is a Big12 brat - she is OURS - and she should stay around for a long time.

I think we have a different stick to measure her by this season. There's another blonde from Louisiana coaching in the Big XII, and she gets just as passionate on the sidelines.

I'm not sure I think it's called for. I'm not sure I think it helps that much. A T can be a momentum swing -- the problem is if you time it wrong the swing back can really hurt you. Setting an example of maturity and tough-mindedness isn't the same thing as wearing your heart on your sleeve and making it all about you.

I think that's what makes me want people to beat Ivory Latta's team so much.

Dee Kantner is one of the MOST respected officials in the women's game. Note: did Kim go beserk when those T's were called? Nope....she wanted to know some information, but she was not going off on Dee. That right there tells you what Kim and the other coaches think of Dee. She's tough, she's fair and if you shove an official you deserve a T.

She's coached a bunch of final fours and Coach Sharp once told me she always relaxed when she saw Dee was one of the officials because she knew the game would be called fair.

I'll take Dee any day of the week.

The World of Referees -- Women's Basketball, Feb 2004 by Wheelock, Helen

There's little doubt that Title IX and the evolution of the female athlete have changed the way basketball is played, coached and marketed. But the impact on those who officiate the games is rarely acknowledged. The same coaches, players and fans who rail against officials often lack an understanding and appreciation of not only the basics but also, as it were, the art of reffing.

"What's expected of officials now has increased exponentially," says Dee Kanter, a Division I ref for 19 years who also supervises the development of officials in the WNBA. "You used to just show up, stretch out a little, go out on the floor, and boom, you're done. Not anymore. These athletes are quicker and stronger. They're doing things that a lot of people aren't used to seeing. You just don't show up at the game and expect to be sharp and work the games to the top level it needs." ...

http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa4112/is_200402/ai_n9358894We've watched her ref for 20+ years. Love her or hate her, let's get her name right: Dee KANTER. ;)

I don't care how she spells her name. I dont' like her, never have and never will. She may have that many years experience, but you couldn't tell it by watching her "work". Let's players literally slap another player in the face, doesn't call it. Allows players to literally climb over the back of players, doesn't call it. Allows players to use their spare tires to push people our of the way, no call. It's been right there on the TV all week for all to see. I don't care if she "let's em play", that means, "she let's em foul and she won't call it." That is not the way the game is to be played according to the rule book! If a foul is made, it's suppose to be called. Period. I'm watching this in games that I have no interest in, so no, I'm not biased towards one team or the other. Just calling it the way I saw it...as did others on national TV. They should have anonamous people in the stands "grading" their performance,if they don't pass the grade, they don't ref for six months or so until they can prove they can make the calls correctly. Maybe that would take some of this "holier than thou", "look at me, look at me" attitude that permiates throughout the refreeing world.

I rewatched the play in "very slow motion", and Tango is correct in that it was pulling her elbow up that pissed off Dee. It was a sign of disrespect on Morrow's part.

I think Kevin Eichenfelder was out of line in making that comment.
The referee's are in control of the game on the court, they are the boss. Period. Not you, not me, not Kevin, not Debbie.

Brenda told us at the Hoopscoop Meeting that many officials don't want to call Big XII games because our conference has more stringent offical review procedures than most conferences. Some of the officials, even the best ones, don't want to be subjected to that. (that is Tango's recap taken from the Hoopscoop Gathering thread.)

Want to see it change? Become a ref. Encourage young players leaving college to become refs.

This is my first posting since this game. I saw the end of the game outside thus heard the tv commentary. The T on Morrow was bullcrap. I agree 110% with Kevin's comments. Morrow shouldn't have put her hands on the official but the same goes for the ref. You put your hands on a player in the heat of the moment in a rivarily game and what do you freaking expect her to do. Come on people lets not have a double standard for players and refs on court behavior.

Didn't we have this discussion about a HS male player and a ref taking a fall at the scorer's table after breaking up an altercation back in February?

Kanter pushed Morrow. Morrow turned and walked away. (gotta love that)
Kanter restrained her and Morrow straightened her elbow to get loose. So Morrow got the T (was that egregious? She'd already fouled out of the game at that point, hadn't she?)

Any road, the last 40 seconds of that ball game were drawn out by T's.
Whether or not fans agree with /think them necessary, the T's were called and Jenna sank the FTs. Padded OU's final score some, IMNVHO.

Price of passion? Quien sabe?

Here's what my recording shows every time I replay it.

Time running out, Rush steps in front of Morrow and pulls down a rebound. Morrow, standing behind Rush, reaches around on both sides and wraps up Rush. "Intentional Unintentional Foul," or trying for the jump ball? Either way, a smart play dictated by time and score. Whistle blows, and the players separate. As they separate, Morrow gives Rush a pretty good shove in the back. Rush turns around with with an angry look on her face, but hand held back ("not my foul"). Kanter, sensing a possible confrontation, jumps between the two. She puts hands on Morrow's waist, backing her up. Morrow turns and starts walking away, with Kanter following VERY closely. Morrow reaches back creates space by nudging Kanter with her elbow. Kanter immediately blows her whistle and makes the "T" sign. I think all of the above before the last two sentences is irrelevant.

I disagree, I have watched it also and I did not see Morrow REACH BACK and create space.

This is a more accurate description IMO.

I know when Kim has been in our arena, she has acted like a spoiled brat and she should have been T'd up several times, but wasn't. She hated it when lowly CU beat her team in Ceal Barry's final home game.(emphasis added)Are you sure?

Baylor defeated Colorado 84-65 on 02/26/05. The two teams did not play again that season.

The remaining two regular season games are at home, this Saturday (Feb. 26) against No. 6 Baylor (22-3) and next Wednesday (March 2) against Nebraska. Both games tip off at 7:00 p.m., with the Nebraska game designated as "Senior Night with a Special Tribute to Coach Ceal Barry" at the Coors Events Center. http://www.big12sports.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/022405aaa.html

We watched the game and put the DVD on super slow motion. You can see her pull her elbow back and push Kanter. It was the only way I saw it.
