Series Record

Texas Tech is 46-17 against Baylor (including a forfeit by Baylor in 1989). Baylor won the first game this year, 61-54, Jan. 3, in Waco. Last year, both teams won on their home court as the Lady Raiders upset then No. 5/5 Baylor, 64-62, in Lubbock Jan. 15; and the Lady Bears won, 73-60, in Waco Feb. 19. The Lady Raiders are 25-3 against Baylor in Lubbock, which includes the forfeit by Baylor in 1989.

We always have very interesting games against Baylor in Lubbock :D:
Last year ARob has 22 points, got a fabulous inbounds pass from Erin Grant with 2 seconds on the clock and banked the ball to win by 2 pts.

I will miss most of this game due to having concert tickets, but may be checking in via cell phone during intermission.

I expect this to be a good game and I expect Tech to find a way to win. It may not be pretty...

Tx4, I don't know. I notice it is being shown on the TTU network, and one of the local Dallas stations (Ch 52 KDFW) carries a lot of the men's games that are broadcast on that network. I can hope, but somehow I doubt that it will be picked up here.

Mosby a must for BU women

The last thing Texas Tech coach Kristy Curry wanted to see was Bernice Mosby coming off of a bad game.

Baylor’s senior post hit just one of 13 shots from the field, finishing with a season-low three points and six rebounds in Saturday’s 76-67 loss at Nebraska.

In the two previous times that she was held to single digits, Mosby bounced back with 20 points in a win at UCLA and 21 at Kansas.

... Tech has issues of its own.

Senior guard Chesley Dabbs quit the team last week for personal reasons, just hours before the Lady Raiders’ 66-65 win at Kansas. She was the team’s second-leading scorer in Big 12 games, averaging 10.1 points and 3.7 rebounds. ...

http://www.wacotrib.com/sports/content/sports/college/2007/02/07/02072007wacmosby.htmlAfter last year's loss in Lubbock, Rachel Allison blamed herself. She isn't a freshman anymore. Rachel will be a force tonight. :BU:

Lady Raiders must crash boards to defeat Baylor (http://lubbockonline.com/stories/020707/col_020707009.shtml)

The Lady Raiders, who this season have lost games because of poor shooting, missed free throws and multiple turnovers, fell to Colorado over the weekend because of their lack of rebounding. The Buffaloes out-rebounded Tech, 43-34, including 23-10 on the offensive glass, helping ruin a night in which the Lady Raiders shot almost 50 percent from the field.

A repeat performance against No. 15 Baylor today could lead to another defeat. The Lady Bears are second in the Big 12 Conference in offensive rebounds, averaging 16 offensive boards per game.

"(Baylor) is not a team that is going to beat you on the first shot, so we have to keep them off the offensive boards," Tech center Patrice Edwards said. "We were very disappointed with the way we rebounded against Colorado. I don't know what the problem was, but it cost us the game."

For Tech coach Kristy Curry, rebounding is not so much about talent and size, but mostly about heart and hard work. She didn't think her team displayed enough of the latter two attributes Saturday.

"I just want to see more will about us (tonight)," Curry said. " I didn't like our body language or energy level on a consistent basis against Colorado. I think they probably have a better understanding of that after the past two days. If not, then we'll lose again."

I've been extremely impressed with how Patrice's game has exploded her senior year. I've seen her on TV and have listened to her work on web audio, and she's become a very significant player this year. With her height, you have to wonder if part of it isn't her body catching up to her athleticism.

She's a player.

With Chesley Dabbs, Tech was allowing the second fewest points in the Big 12 right behind Texas A&M at less than 60 ppg. Without Ches, Tech has allowed 70 and 80 in the last two games.

Some very, very nice words about Marsha in the postgame by KM.

Something to the effect of

"I miss Marsha, you all should miss Marsha. We all miss Marsha. Does she come to the games? (Someone answers yes) Does she? I would have liked to see her tonight. She's done so much for us, she's a legend in the game."

Well, the Lady Bears mvp tonight was: team effort! 4 Lady Bears in double figures, led by Jhasmin Player with 22 and Bernice with 15 points and 13 rebounds. 2 other Lady Bears scored 9 & 8 points each.

Overall it was great to see a much better effort, shooting 52% from the field, 60% from BTA and 85% from the FT line. The plan was to guard Tech's perimeter closely tonight and Patrice sure made us pay. Good game, Patrice.

The game was one marked by runs. Tech got on an early run and led by as many as 9. Then Baylor came back on a run and took the lead at the half. Don't recall they ever relinquished it in the second half, but Tech got to within 1 a couple of times. The game was very much in doubt up until the very end. Starting at about the 3 minute mark, several Lady Bears stepped up big! First Morrow knocking down a shot from off the glass, then Allison scoring, then Tizzy knocking down a huge 3, followed by a basket by Mosby.

Great win in Lubbock, Lady Bears!

Patrice Edwards. Wow.

Jordan Murphree is an athlete.
Alesha Robertson is a fine ballplayer.
Brooke Baughman never gives up, never says quit.
Tiny Henderson always has a little more spring and another jump.
Raquel Christian is developing into a fine guard.

But tonight, there was nobody on the floor like Patrice Edwards.

I guess, from Patrice's viewpoint, as a player who always seemed to be an asterisk before this year, that when life if fair, when you have the best game of your entire career, in your final college season, then that effort should propel your team to a rousing win.

I'd have cried too, Patrice. You deserve Player of the Week for that performance, and I certainly wish for you to get it.

Your team will only get better, and I'm dreaming that you are a part of an NCAA team that makes some noise down the road.

I truly believe it can happen, because I dreamed about it the other day, and I'm a Sooner fan. There must be SOMETHING there...

Dang...I just got in from seeing Guy Clark, Lyle Lovett, Joe Ely and John Hiatt - wonderful concert and I was sending good thoughts the way of the Lady Raiders as I heard stories about W. Texas.

Mom just told me about Patrice's game and burying her head. I'd like to give you a great big hug Patrice and thank you for all that you did tonight (and all you've done for this team)! Yes, we're missing Ches on defense very badly.

Congrats to the Bears - winning one in Lubbock is something to be proud of.

Got home late and just got through watching the game. Always a thrill to get a win in Lubbock since they've been so rare over the years.

Can't say more about Patrice than has been said. SHe was ON, and in a variety of ways. THe only thing IMO that kept Tech from having a shot at winning was shooting. Outside of Patrice, the rest of the team barely shot 30% for the game, despite alot of open looks. I thought the ball movement against our zone was pretty good, but the shots didn't fall.

Bernice rebounded well from Nebraska. She was active and aggressive, and kept us in the rebounding battle. Jhasmin PLayer seems to have discovered the offense we were all wondering if she had a few weeks back. Two career high games out of the last three is great, and she gives us the penetrator and scorer that we have lacked if she keeps it up.

A also liked the commentary. Boles is very complimentary and positive towards the opposing players, and even more rare, not hesitant to admit when the refs are right and the home fans are wrong (and the other way as well, of course.) I'm curious if Tech fans notice this as much as I did as an opposing fan. She also gave alot of information on specific defenses and sets, and how the coaches worked the matchups during the game. You don't get alot of color analysts giving that much helpful info any more.

Player, Lady Bears rifle Tech

... Player, who had 21 in last Wednesday’s 71-70 win over Missouri, said she felt she had a quickness advantage against Tech’s guards.

“The coaches do a great job of helping me with my confidence,” Player said. “When (Mulkey) tells me ‘Jazz, blow by somebody,’ I feel like I have that green light. She can tell me to do it once, and I’m going to do it the next three times.”

Mulkey said Player’s recent increase in scoring is more mental than physical.

“I think when you’re playing with a lot of confidence, you feel like you can score every time,” Mulkey said. “And Jhasmin takes it off the dribble as well as anybody I have ever coached.”

http://www.wacotrib.com/sports/content/sports/college/2007/02/08/02082007wacladybears.htmlAs a freshman (and in her first games this season), Jhasmin Player drove to the basket and drew charging fouls, again and again. Wonderfully, that has changed! :)

Lady Raiders fall to Baylor

... "It looked a little like girls playing women ... bottom line that's what it was," Tech coach Kristy Curry said. "I was disappointed that when we cut it to three ... we just didn't have enough heart. I didn't like anything, again, about our aggressive nature."

Curry's biggest qualm was with her perimeter players, who combined to score 14 points on 6-of-30 shooting. They also faded down the stretch.

"I really am challenging how much (our perimeter players) care right now," Curry said. "I don't want to be negative and beat them down. But it is what it is.

"That's my quote for the night: It is what it is."

I have been waiting all season for Jhasmin Player to kick her game into gear. Maybe she will continue to play with this type of enthusiasm. She is very capable of running the point and penetrating and scoring or getting the assist.

I agree...and Ryan does the same. She used to do color for the radio broadcasts (and still does sometimes) and I listened in the arena. The fans would be going nuts over a call and Ryan and Crystal would be laughing and saying..nope she clearly traveled or ...whatever.

She does an excellent job!

I really like to listen to Crystal Boles. She is very knowledgable and very fair in her reporting. I think she would do a better job for ESPN and Fox than some of the people they have right now.

Comments from the coaches
http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaw/recap?gid=200702070592&prov=ap

"I thought the zone made them think a little more and be more patient," Baylor coach Kim Mulkey said. "They were blowing by us."

"I thought our kids dug pretty deep tonight when they had opportunities to lose their composure," Mulkey said. "Walking out of here with a win is important."

Tech coach Kristy Curry said not enough players fed off Edwards' performance.

"She came through and that's what we needed tonight," she said. "We just didn't follow her lead tonight."

"It just looked a little bit like girls playing women," Curry said. "We're too passive."

Yes, Crystal knows the game.

Some people here may not know she was the center for the Lady Raiders once upon a time. She held the team record for blocked shots until it was broken by Cisti Greenwalt a couple years ago.

I need to say that I was wrong about Patrice Edwards. With her late start in basketball in the US and the injuries to her knees, I didn't think there was enough time this season for her develop from a raw talent with a lot of energy into a Div I basketball player. She is proving that thinking wrong and I couldn't be happier. Consistency is still an issue, but I think Patrice has come a long way with Bill Brock's coaching this season.

If you ever hear her interviewed, she is quite an impressive speaker
