My fellow womens basketball fans, I come to talk to you of war. It is not a battle of 94 feet-by-50 feet. It is not the fight with our conference rivals or the scramble for every RPI point.

It is much bigger than that.

This is a gruesome war that has affected us all in some way, directly or indirectly.

It hit the ranks of the sport we love quite hard:

Janice Richard. Head Womens Basketball Coach, San Jose State University
Katie Delaney-Smith. Head Womens Basketball Coach, Harvard University.
Kay Yow. Head Womens Basketball Coach, North Carolina State University.
Bill Fennelly. Head Womens Basketball Coach, Iowa State University.
Debbie Ryan. Head Womens Basketball Coach, University of Virginia.

That's just the short list.

They are in the heat of the battle now...as is Edna Campbell...as is future hopeful Charnelle Bacon.

And there are the millions who fight along side. Fighting in our families, our workplaces...and our teams we root for.

Imagine being an Iowa State Cyclone hearing about your head coach.

Imagine being a Virginia Cavalier...seeing your coach in pain.

Imagine being a part of the North Carolina State Wolfpack, seeing your coach making a comeback.

Imagine having one eye on UConn's next opponent...and one eye on your mother tussling with life and death..

Imagine being a Houston Comet a few years ago.....at your point guard's funeral.

This weekend, January 26-28, is WBCA "Think Pink" Weekend. When you go to the game, many of our teams will have special events for cancer awareness. Wear your pink and take part and sacrifice that extra hot dog at the concession stand and kick in to find victory in research.

We are at war, and we've all been drafted.

THINK PINK for games on Jan. 26, 27 and 28

The WBCA would like to encourage its membership, all coaching staffs and game day support staffs to help unify the women’s basketball world in a show of support for all coaches in our profession who are battling cancer. If you have a game the weekend of January 26-28, please wear pink on the bench.

This is an excellent idea.......

the odd thing is that OU is having White OUt Saturday morning and Pink OUt for breast cancer research on February 12. Looking at the release, I think ESPN2 is the operative word and reasoning for the date.

The OU Athletics Department will also a hold a "Pack The Place Pink Night” for the Feb. 12 Red River Rivalry matchup with Texas on ESPN2. In an effort to promote breast cancer awareness and early detection, free pink t-shirts will be placed in every seat and again fans are encouraged to put them on when they arrive.

On Saturday the Cyclone women will be wearing pink shoelaces for their game against K-State. The coaches will all be sporting pink and the fans are encouraged to wear something pink to the game. Also this year the four men's coaches (UNI, UI, Drake and ISU) are participating in "Hoops for Hope" check out the link for more information.

Here's another thing you can do: At this website you can help fund mammograms for women who can't afford them just by clicking on the link button. I have been doing this for over a year now (click once a day ..takes only seconds) and to the best of my knowledge have not gotten anything nasty on my computer from the website.

I didn't know Edna Campbell had cancer. I wish her well. Wish we had a game this weekend so I could wear pink. Some people who are very important to me have been the victims of breast cancer.
