Texas staying afloat even without shooter

Based solely on credentials, Texas coach Jody Conradt’s 2005 recruiting class might be one of the best in the history of women’s basketball.

Three McDonald’s all-Americans, the national player of the year (Erika Arriaran), the players of the year in Arkansas (Crystal Boyd) and Oklahoma (Earnesia Williams) and a guard who was invited to the 2005 national team tryouts for Puerto Rico (Carla Cortijo).

But more than anything, the class will ultimately leave its mark by the sheer number of knee surgeries. ...

Texas' Jackson focal point of BU's attention

... “What they have is a team full of youth with an all-American center,” Mulkey said. “And because of (Jackson’s) presence on the floor, she’s making them all look a lot better than most freshmen do at this time in their career.”

Longhorns need to sustain confidence
Texas opens tough four-game stretch with Baylor.

... Texas forward Tiffany Jackson will draw Mosby as an assignment. As Conradt said Tuesday they may cancel each other out.

Mosby is averaging 18.7 points a game — she scored 29 in the Bears' 79-70 win Sunday over Kansas State. Jackson, after suffering one of her worst offensive outings in recent memory a week ago over Iowa State, put together one of her best ever games against the Aggies. She scored 27 points with 14 rebounds and four steals. "It's going to be very intense," Jackson said of her Mosby assignment.

Jackson has been suffering from shin splints, which caused her to miss most of last week's workouts. She was mostly pain-free against A&M, and Texas kept her moving, rather than having her try to score solely from the low post. Jackson has been practicing more this week.

Head coaches from the WNBA's San Antonio, Connecticut, Minnesota and Indiana teams are expected to be on hand to scout both players. ...

http://www.statesman.com/sports/content/sports/stories/longhorns/01/24/24texfem.htmlTwo of the freshmen who will take the court tonight are (somewhat) known quantities to each other. ... The game could ultimately come down to a potential battle of freshman guards.

Baylor freshman Latara Darrett has played against Texas freshman Brittainey Raven “since we were in the sixth grade.”

“That girl is lightning-quick,” Darrett said. “Her quickness has always been an advantage, because she can blow by you and get up and down the court. We’ve got to keep remembering that if we don’t get the rebound, we’ve got to get back.”

It will be televised on CSTV. Can't help you with local channels. Perhaps one of the Waco stations is planning to pick up the broadcast?

That's right, Tx4. I think it may be included on some satellite packages. I went to the neighborhood Friday's to watch the UT vs Duke game earlier this year. But think I'm going to opt to stay at home tonight.

Every time I've checked lately, Baylor has held a 4 point lead over Texas, and at 3:56 left they lead 5t-51. But Texas is not going away, so this game might get pretty exciting at the end.

Texas is in trouble at home trailing 55-59 to Baylor with just 1:36 left.

Now we find out which team wants it more.

I'll be honest, I thought that Texas would hold at home tonight. Gut-check performance for the Lady Bears, who really needed this win to keep the momentum flowing.

Lady Bears win 63-59. Whew! What a game!

Bernice with 23 points and 12 rebounds, Darrett with 18 points.

Bernice goes for 40 full minutes tonight. She really stepped up when we needed it.

Tizzy and Darrett each knock down 2 FT in the closing seconds. That was huge!

Overall we had better rebounding (41-30), our transition defense was better and our post defense was better.

BUT also give credit to the 'Horns! Hughes had a big game.

And I was reminded again tonight of what a great PA announcer the 'Horns have. I just love when he/she yells out the players names . . . HUUUUUGGGHHHEEESSS! Reminds of EDWIIIIIINNNNAAA!

She might not show up in the stats as usual, but Allison played a great game and her defense was something. As usual she was doing her blue collar, hard nosed, attitude made a huge difference in the game. Just my opinion!!

I agree, she did a superb job on Jackson and Jackson's stats show it.

Rachel's nickname in our section is "Rambis." For those that don't remember, Kurt Rambis was the unsung player for the Lakers' dynasty of the 80's who did all of the grunt work while Magic Kareem, James Worthy and the others were busy with "showtime."

Lady Bears grow up, 63-59

AUSTIN — With Bernice Mosby and shot-blocking freshman Danielle Wilson at the post, it’s easy to forget about Rachel Allison.

But the 6-foot-1 sophomore came up with one of the biggest plays of the game Wednesday night when she grabbed an offensive rebound with 39 seconds left.

That helped the 13th-ranked Baylor Lady Bears hold off No. 24 Texas, 63-59, before a crowd of 5,439 at the Erwin Center.

“Baylor grew up tonight,” said Baylor coach Kim Mulkey, whose team improved to 17-3 overall and tied for second in the Big 12 at 4-2. “When you coach a lot of youth, you expect a lot of mistakes. And we still will make mistakes. But what we had were some kids that stepped up when it was crunch time and made a play, whether it was a big rebound, if it was a deflection, a shot, a defensive stop. I just thought we grew up tonight.”

And while Mosby turned in an all-American caliber performance with 23 points and 12 rebounds, Allison helped hold Texas senior Tiffany Jackson to just eight points and seven rebounds and a 3-for-11 performance from the field.

“Stat sheets don’t always tell the tale of how valuable Rachel Allison is to our basketball team,” Mulkey said. “She guards Tiffany Jackson most of the night, she gets deflection, she makes Tiffany take tough shots, and she turns around and rebounds. That’s why the kid has to play.” ...

We must raise them right, because it's not nearly the same announcer as when Edwina played. ;)

It was a very exciting game. Congratulations to a tough Baylor team.

I have to agree that Rachel was vital to the win last night. She really played some tough defense on Jackson. When I looked up to the scoreboard and saw that Jackson had only 8 points, I knew the reason. It was a great game.

Latarra and Bernice are two very special players.

I'm ready to see the unforced turnovers and mental mistakes diminish as the season progresses.

I thought Baylor executed a great defensive game plan on the Longhorns. The zone and help defense was great.

As I purchased preminum reserved seats, I knew I would be right in the middle of a bunch of Burnt Orange. What I didn't expect, was the constant banter for Kim to "sit down", all the while Jody was standing with arms crossed on the other end. I have to admit, Kim was doing a lot more coaching than Jody throughout the game. Some fans were a little disgruntled before, during and after the game over Conradt's coaching. It has been touched on here before, but I had never heard such firsthand comments by the Texas fans. I would bet money that the man and lady seated next to me bled burnt orange. ;)
