Texas Sports announced that the game has been delayed by one day so the Horns can get out of Austin.

However, Austin airport operations are halted this morning (Wednesday 1/17) because there is no deicing fluid, They say 90% of scheduled flights won't go. No flights are coming in either. Austin is essentially shut down for the third day due to icy conditions. The weather could break later today, or the team might fly tomorrow morning. This game could be rescheduled again.

Ouch! Thanks for the info.

I hope you take this suggestion as seriously as its made. ;)
Since deicing fluid is alcohol couldn't you just go by a few honky tonks and pick up all you need? I do understand if there are higher and better uses for alcohol in Texas. ;)

Seriously, I am not surprised. There is no way that an airport that sees cold and icing conditions only rarely could invest in large stockpiles of fluid and the equipment to use it effectively on a large scale. There are probably not a large number of snowplows and sanding trucks between Houston and Galveston either. ;)

I used to live in Eastern Oregon and we had great fun ridiculing Western Oregon and especially Portland drivers when they had to drive on snow or ice. They were just not equipped for it (tires etc.) and since they had little experience driving on slick streets they were terrible at it. Its all relative. We close school here in Kansas for conditions that would be considered normal everyday driving in South Dakota.

I remember vividly when I moved to Oak Ridge, Tenn. from New York City, how astounded I was when Knoxville experienced a light dusting of snow, maybe a quarter or a half an inch. They shut down the highways and schools, filled the air with emergency warnings about dangerous driving conditions, etc. I could barely believe they were serious, but you'd have thought that a new ice age had just started.

Not sure about K'ville - but for Austin, we simply aren't prepared to deal with ice/snow - it happens so infrequently - doesn't make sense to spend boat loads of money on equip and stuff.

Also, the populace does not know how to drive on ice/snow - not enough practice. Those of us who once knew, have summarily forgotten due to lack of practice.

Thus, you take your life in your own hands when you venture out on the stuff and it's just safer to shut everything down for a day or two.
