Baylor men's basketball team bare after uniforms, shoes left in Dallas following delayed flight

Saturday, December 16, 2006 -- Tribune-Herald staff report

The Baylor men’s basketball team arrived in Syracuse, N.Y., at 11 p.m. Friday — but their luggage, including uniforms and playing shoes, were apparently still in Dallas.

The Bears (6-2) are scheduled to play the 23rd-ranked Syracuse Orangemen tonight in the Carrier Dome at 6 CST.

The team left Waco Thursday night to spend the night in Dallas and catch American Airlines’ only direct flight from the DFW airport Friday morning. But after three hours of delays, that flight was canceled and American eventually books the BU traveling party on two later flights, through Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.

After rescheduling the flight, the Baylor staff found an empty wing of the American Airlines concourse to conduct a walk-through practice. They created a makeshift foul lane with some packing tape and conducted a 45-minute practice using a Gatorade bottle for a basketball, according to Heath Nielsen, assistant athletic director for media relations. A team practice scheduled for Friday night at the Carrier Dome was canceled.

The majority of the team left DFW around 4:30 p.m. and arrived in Washington around 8:20 EST, then transferred to U.S. Airways for the flight to Syracuse. The staff members who flew separately through Pittsburgh had still not arrived in Syracuse as of midnight EST.

Nielsen said that as of 12:30 EST, most of the coaching staff was still at the Syracuse airport, and that some of the support staff had gone to purchase toiletry items that the hotel couldn’t supply, such as contact lens solution. The hotel is providing toothbrushes, toothpaste and deodorant.

Nielsen said airline officials expect the Bears’ luggage to arrive in increments throughout the day, hopefully in time for a scheduled shootaround at 11:30 a.m. EST and tonight’s game.
