SCOUTING THE BEARKATS
The Sam Houston State Bearkats, currently 3-3 on the season, have been idle since Nov. 27. First-year Bearkat head coach and former Sam Houston State player Brenda Welch-Nichols came to the Huntsville, Texas, campus from Mercer University after serving as its head coach. The Bearkats' victories have come against Texas Southern (81-65), LSU-Shreveport (65-56) and Wiley (97-76), all three contests were home games. They have suffered road defeats to SMU (84-50), Texas (84-56) and Rice (91-48).
Sam Houston State is led by senior forward Erica Parker and freshman forward Whitney Smith, both of whom average 10.0 points a game, while junior forward Britney Harris follows closely with 9.5 an outing. Parker is also the squad's top rebounder at 5.2 a game while junior center Adah Wells hauls down 4.3 a contest.

Baylor 59, SHSU 26 at the half. :)
The Lady Bears are 8-of-12 from the three-point line (Morrow and Tisdale both hit 3). Mosby was in for just 8 minutes.
Coach Kim's outfit, for those who didn't pay for All-Access: black leather pants and vest, lavender shirt.

Baylor 117, Sam Houston 50 (BU's NCAA all-time high game) :)
All Lady Bears scored (first buckets for Oberg and Abbe), six in double figures. The only weak point was free throws: just 8-of-17.
LaToya Wyatt had a great game, as she guided four "babies" (freshmen): 13 points, 4 assists, 3 steals, 2 rebounds.
In her postgame interview, Kim said they'd played a 2-3 zone in the second half by design. She told them just play, don't pay attention to the score.

Doesn't that really belong under the Off-Topic thread? Doesn't have anything to do with the game.

It's hard to tell a whole lot from a mismatch like this, but I think this game was great in many ways for the girls tonight. The starters got to rest their legs a bit (they only played an average of 18 minutes each) got to work on some zone defense that they don't usually get to do in a game situation, and hopefully gained some shooting confidence. Their numbers as a starting group are pretty amazing. 26-34 from the field, 6-7 from BTA, and 17 assists.
As important, the bench players got valuable time together and kept their focus and intensity throughout the game, which is hard to do in a blowout, and hasn't exactly always been one of our strong points.
Overall a good way to finish of a busy stretch of games and move into the layoff for final exams.

Actually, I like reading other aspects of the game that would be considered color commentary. If you don't get to see it yourself, you learn more than just the scores.

Baylor women scorch Bearkats
After playing 10 games in 25 days, the 12th-ranked Baylor Lady Bears may very well need a break.
But they didn’t show even a hint of fatigue Monday night, hitting their first seven shots from the field and taking a 36-point lead in the opening 11 minutes of a 117-50 rout of helpless Sam Houston State.
“That’s a good way to go into the break,” said Baylor coach Kim Mulkey, whose team is 9-1 heading into a nine-day break for semester final exams. “They ought to all feel good about themselves, and they ought to all come out making straight A’s on their finals.” ...
