If you usually come straight to the message board, you might not know that someone posted a story on Susie Powers on the main page. Thanks to the person who posted the story.

The story is about Powers' experience spending a month as a volunteer in Peru last summer. It is usual and expected now for Div 1 players to spend all summer at school, taking classes and working out. I think everyone might be better off if more players took a month off to do something different as Powers did. I bet Powers game doesn't suffer one bit and may even be improved as a result of spending a month removed from basketball and doing something else interesting and inspiring to her.

The story mentions how Coach McConnell-Miller gave Powers permission to go. I was under the impression that summer workouts were theoretically "voluntary" though I know that students are, in fact, expected to stay at college through the summer.

Being completely honest and open, Carolann, I haven't seen a negative side to CU's new coach yet. Maybe I haven't been playing close attention, but normally my "vibe meter" is pretty much in tune.

I think it was wonderful of Kathy to have encouraged Powers' to go to Peru. It seems that she is often encouraging her players to have learning experiences beyond what one would normally think of as happening in conjucntion with baskertball. Last season I believe there was a day when she required each player to give a speech/report on a famous women during practice.

As for Powers' experiece, I think most middle and upper class Ameriecans have no clue about how much of the world lives. It's great that she had the experience and I hope she'll she it with her friends, family and teammates.

I agree with you about Kathy. I have found her to be a very open person in my interactions with her. I think the future for the Buffs is bright.

I agree with Mark about Susie going to Peru. Most of us have never seen that kind of poverty and never will. Susie can help her teammates grow up.
