Does attendance at games in first round games at Big XII sites count if the home team isn't playing? e.g. Fla vs BYU, etc. Does attendance count at away games in which a Big XII school is playing?
No and no. Only games played by a Big XII team on its home court (plus the Big XII tournament).

Can somebody explain why Tech's attendance at its 1st-round game in the NCAA tournament is so much lower than their average attendance during the rest of the season?

Sunday will be well over 10,000 for us. The few remaining tickets go on sale at the BU-Kansas baseball game tomorrow and Sunday at the Ferrell Center.
Mulkey played it close to the vest tonight, so Drake couldn't adequately scout us, and the result was a sloppy game at times. Drake will test us, but I think we're more than ready for the challenge. This is why we played hard all year to get this home advantage to payoff in the subregionals! Really looking forward to Sunday!

Read all my other posts dem and I have explained what excuses some Tech fans were offering for not buying tickets to go to the game last night.

Dem, here are the reasons IMO:
During the regular season Tech has students who buy season tickets. For the NCAA games, Tech is charging $25 for the all-session ticket and there is no break in price for the students. I heard someone say that free tickets cannot be given away for NCAA games. Plus students were on spring break this week, so very few were in town on Friday.
The men's team played in Chicago on Friday night. There were quite a few fans that went to Chicago, so some fans of both teams may have been in Chicago.
Because the start time of the game, many of the older fans said they were going to stay home and watch it on TV on the local Fox station rather than be out that late. If they had a choice, I'm guessing Tech asked for the late start time so the game wouldn't go head to head with the men's game which started at 7:00 pm.
Although not a school night, I suspect many families who regularly attend games were reluctant to go to a game they would not get home from until midnight, and that's if they lived in Lubbock. Many of Tech's fans come from outlying communities and they would have gotten home even later.

And of course, you had the ones that didn't want to go because they would rather watch the men (who lost by the way) than pay money to watch the women. They were freakin' showing the men's game at the arena for those who wanted to do that. I watched it and it was pathetic anyways so it's not like the people who went to the women's game missed anything. It should be better for Sunday's game. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Since they didn't show more games on TV I don't know why the made some of the games so late. Question for fans that went to games last night did you go for the first game or stay for the second game? I just watched the Iowa game at UConn and the place was almost empty till the game was almost over. When Iowa State has a tournament we also go for both games. I was just wondering what other do.
I always go to both games, but ISU fans as a whole don't always. I'd say only 3,000 or so showed up to the first game in the CvC tournament.

Obviously Baylor didn't have to worry about a men's game being a conflict http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/redface.gif , but there was a baseball game scheduled next door at 7:00. They moved that game up to 5:30 so BU fans could make both the baseball game and the Lady Bears game. I was really worried that this would mean that there would be almost nobody at the Syracuse/Drake game, but I was pleasantly surprised. I would estimate 2500-3000 people were there. Not bad i think, especially since we don't have any tradition in hosting games in which we aren't involved.

I'd say about 3000 were there for the first game by halftime of that game.

We went for both games here in Austin. There was a decent crowd for the LaTech-UCSB game, and then it filled in for the the UT game. I saw that the official attendace was 4k+, and that seems low to me. I've been to a lot of games at the Erwin Center and looking at the crowd, I guessed it to be 7K+. Did anyone else think it looked fuller than the official number?

I think ESPN makes the women's televised games late on Friday because they don't want to compete against the men's games. The men's games were generally over by 9 or 10 so then its ok to show the women's games.
Since the men will be into the second round on Saturday, there are fewer men's games to compete against and so more women's games are shown at *decent* times.
All this is my best guess. No actual knowledge here..... as usual. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif

I left work a little early and we got to Bramlage just after the Arkansas v Clemsen game started. I would say there were 2 thousand fans there and they just kept on coming in. By the end of the game most of the 10,573 total were already in. They announced that about 2,000 tickets remained for the Sunday game. I think we will have more there than we did friday.
The crowd was active and loud for the KSU game and it was a very fun atmosphere. All sesion tickets were $20.00 for chairbacks and $15.00 for bench seats. $10.00 for students, and $3.00 for parking. It sure is a good show for the money.
The 93-65 win was our first NCCA win since 1983. Ohlde got her 22 points in only 19 minutes.

You lose seating for the press and 2 bands but last year the total they quoted for Iowa State games seemed lower than we thought it should have been.

I have no idea where they got the numbers last year. They were way too low.
Texan,
I agree it looked like 7K+.
The concourses were full during pre-game and half time just like the old days when we averaged 8K. But, there was few if any folks upstairs. That's probably why it was so deceptive and the aforementioned reasons above.
It will be interesting to see what numbers are reported for Iowa State tonight since last year's figure was clearly wildly inaccurate, absurdly low unless they gave away two or three thousand tickets to the press who then decided to cheer for ISU.
An important factor regarding attendance for the game not involving the home team is whether or not seating is general admission. In 1999, seating for the Iowa State-Santa Clara game was mostly general admission. As a result, I and thousands of other fans came many hours early, lining up to grab the best seats available for the EARLIER game (Oregon-Cincinnati). That meant that we had more than 9,000 in the seats during half-time of that earlier game. Since that time, all seats for subregionals at Iowa State have been reserved. As a result, attendance at the earlier games has been much worse.

Neither of OU's game's (providing there are 2; I am assuming NOTHING; I watched the Dookies today).......are until 8:30 pm.
I'm kind of glad OU is playing this late, it prepares them for Idaho time, where they won't start until 9 pm......again, gotta beat Hartford 1st tonite......

Attendance in Ames tonight was approximately 7,500. It was the smallest crowd to ever see an NCAA tournament game in Ames. The 7500 who were there were into the game, at least.
ISU women's basketball appeals to families. WAY past bedtime for the under 12 set. I expect Monday night to be similar.
An interesting note. The radio guys said that BYU can't play or practice on Sunday's. I'm assuming that watching tape is acceptable, but it seems a huge disadvantage.

These OU bandwagon fans come out of the woodwork at tourney time.....
OU attendance tonite, 11,200; which sets an OU record, last year vs Stanford the attendance was 11,050.......I have no idea how many the LNC holds anymore. I know they added 500 seats, so I'm guessing 11,550.
so, i figure we stand at 944,479 now?????? and 7 more games to be played today and tomorrow. If ever team meets their same attendance of the 1st round games, we will have 1000 or so to spare past the million and that's not counting ISU's games in the Regionals.........yippee http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

I don't know who does the counting, but there were at least 9,000 at the game last night. My mouth dropped when I saw that only 7,561 were reported there. I really take issue with the scheduling of the game so late. The attendance is really going to suffer on Monday night. 9:30 start will just be too late for most families.
I am glad to see OU and KSU fill em up. Now it's time to have a 7-0 second round for the Big XII!

According the AJ about 7,500 tickets have been sold for tonight's game. Friday night's 7900 was the lowest attendance for an NCAA game here in several years. Last year we had 12,000+ for the first two games (it was during spring break too)...but a bit earlier and we weren't competing with the men's game.
I listened to the men's game while watching MSU and BC and it wasn't worth staying home for and missing the Lady Raiders kick butt.
The ticket office didn't get my application for our regular season ticket seats and I didn't think to call, so we weren't in our usual seats along with other rowdies. And instead we had some people around us who were a) bored with the game and b) who didn't grasp the fact that being a fan means participating in the game and were not pleased with our "involvement" in the game. Too bad...then they need to stay home and watch it on tv. I get as up for this game at Ellison does and I have no intention of staying in my seat with my hands folded in my lap.
I think there will be a fair number of people who buy single game tickets today for this game...those who waited to see if we would "win" on Friday.

I understand that frustration completely. ISU treats the NCAA games as an opportunity to re-seat pretty much the entire arena. I don't think they allow anyone to keep their regular season ticket seats. To add insult to injury, they give seating priority based on athletic department donation level. As a student, the tickets themselves are expensive enough for me.
It's even more frustrating to watch the people in my seats sit there like lumps on a log. At least they wore the school colors. Moving from from the ~20th row to the balcony just makes me yell louder (I want them to hear me, right?) and those around me don't really understand that, either. One more thing -- people in the balcony leave early! And go to the concession stand during the game! I clearly do not belong with them. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Careful now there, I'm one of those balcony fans. LOL But I have NEVER left my seat during a game. Section 24 is pretty good, our occupants usually stay for the whole game.

I'd probably be mad at you, too, because you always get up DURING the game and block my view of the court. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif Can't people wait for a stoppage in play before returning to their seats?
