View Full Version : Big-12 Gymnastics
Not basketball, but I wanted to make sure people know that Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Iowa State qualified for the 12-team national championship meet. Qualifying for this meet is a BIG DEAL, and requires a top-two finish at one of the six regional meets that bring ranked teams into head-to-head competition. It is a super-high-pressure competition because just one or two slight slips or balance breaks can end your team's season, even if you were ranked in or near the top 10 all year long. And this is exactly what happened to #8 Stanford, which was squeezed out of a spot in the nationals by 0.525 points--just around the amount you lose if you slip off the balance beam. And Stanford was the HOST of their regional! Talk about a tough home loss...

ISU hosted and I was there. While I am glad that ISU advances I really wanted ISU to win the regional with it in their own building. It adds to the frustration that the team who won the regional Ariz. St. beat us earlier in the season and I wanted some payback. I hope the team can rebound at nationals. I was wondering how other big 12 teams did. Congrats to OU and Neb on their performances this weekend.

Cyclones Rule, I have a friend who closely follows gymnastics and said there were some, shall we say, scoring irregularities at the ASU meet. Apparently several of the judges were former ASU gymnasts and are being investigated and may be banned from judging again? Any info on that?

Friend of Cy,
I had not heard anything like that but at that meet ISU scored a season high score of 197 only to lose because ASU scored something like 197.750 which is borderline rediculous. I will say that on Saturday between ASU and ISU ASU was deserving of being the regional champ. At nationals the 12 qualifying teams are split into two six teams sessions and ISU and ASU will be in them same session. I hope third times a charm against them. Ou and Neb are in the other session.
ASU scored something like 197.750 which is borderline rediculous.
For some perspective on this score, consider that the highest team score posted this season by #1 ranked Georgia was 197.625, by #2 Utah 197.500, by #3 Florida 197.325, by #4 Iowa State 197.275, and by ANY OTHER TEAM 197.100 (by #8 Stanford and by #9 Michigan). ASU is ranked #11.
Utah, incidentally, includes on its roster Ashley Postell who, in 2002, was the WORLD CHAMPION on balance beam, if you can wrap your mind around that. UCLA, meanwhile, somehow failed to qualify for nationals despite having three world-class gymnasts on its roster [current U.S. national team member Kristina Comforte, 2000 U.S. Olympic Team member Tasha Schwikert (who also was #5 all-arounder at the 2001 World Championships), and 2004 Canadian Olympian Kate Richardson (Olympic finalist in both all-around and floor exercise).] Although Richardson graduates, her spot will be filled in next year by Alicia Sacramone, the 2005 World Floor Exercise Champion (who was also bronze medalist on the vault).
But it's not ONLY kids who excel in gymnastics: 30-year-old Oksana Chusovitina of Uzbekistan beat Sacramone out and won the silver medal on the vault at worlds.

Nebraska advanced to the final six by winning session 1 of the NCAA Gymnastics championships! Oklahoma made some uncharacteristic mistakes in some of their routines and as a result their season comes to an end.

It must be impossible to have six teams so close that 0.8 points is all the difference there is between first and sixth.

As someone who does not follow gymnastics more than casually, it is really impressive what the Big 12 schools are doing. When are the finals?

Friend of Cy. The Super Six finals are tonight with individual finals tomorrow.
This is an historic achievement by the Iowa State team, first time ever in the Super Six. It is not quite as big a deal as getting to the Final Four, but it is close.

Place Team Score
1 Georgia 197.750
2 Utah 196.800
3 Alabama 196.725
4 Florida 196.275
5 Nebraska 196.175
6 Iowa State 194.725
nebraska and isu finish fifth and sixth.
Not a surprise since all these sec teams automatically get 9.8 or better. Courntey Kupets a member of the athens usa gymnastics team gets as close as an all round score as one can get with a 39.75 out of 40.00. This marks an end to a very special group of isu gymnasts. This season may have been ISU's pinnacle season.
Wrapping it up, results on individual event finals:
Vault:
4 (tie): Janet Anson, Iowa State
4 (tie): Emily Parsons, Nebraska
Uneven Parallel Bars:
10: Vanessa Meloche, Nebraska
11: Stephanie LoPiccolo, Oklahoma
Floor Exercise:
3 (tie): Janet Anson, Iowa State
6: Emily Parsons, Nebraska
10: Tricia Woo, Nebraska
On Floor Exercise, Anson was beaten out only by Kate Richardson, 2004 Olympic 7th placer in Floor Exercise, and Courtney Kupets, the 2002 World Champion in Uneven Bars, who is also a 2004 Olympic silver (team) and bronze (bars) medalist. On Vault, the top placers were Ashley Miles, 2001 World Championships bronze medalist (team), Kristina Comforte, USA National Team member, and Kate Richardson. This is truly elite-level performance.
