The Minnesota women's basketball program lost another player Monday, when leading scorer and rebounder Jamie Broback announced her decision to leave the team for personal reasons.

Last week, the Gophers announced that sophomores Brittney Davis and Lauren Lacey -- both key reserves -- were released from their scholarships and will transfer to other schools.

Broback, a junior who played at Eastview High School, averaged 13.7 points and 6.8 rebounds this season. She is not expected to continue her career.

"We obviously want the best for Jamie," coach Pam Borton said in a prepared statement released by the school. "We will continue to support Jamie's academic pursuits and wish her the best of luck."

The decision was hardly surprising. Broback was asked to take a one-week leave from the team last fall, missing two exhibition games, and was then held out of Minnesota's first two regular-season contests for mostly academic reasons.

In the Gophers' first-round loss to Washington in the NCAA Tournament on March 18, Broback was benched for nearly the entire second half and finished with just two points.

"I thought she was playing scared and tentative," Borton said after that game. "Jamie wasn't getting the job done."

Broback's departure means Minnesota will bring back just five players who saw time this season -- guard Kelly Roysland, center Liz Podominick, forward Natasha Williams, guard Emily Fox and forward Leslie Knight, who appeared in only four games.

I wondered when that shoe was going to drop.

There is talk going around that Podominick will drop basketball to concentrate on track where she is a highly rated shot and discus performer, having won both at the Big 11 meet as a freshman last year. (She red shirted in track the previous year)

Here is her track bio at Minnesota.

Podominick was the fourth-ranked freshman in the nation in both shot and discus, so she has tremendous potential.

But what is going on with Minnesota??

This may be a case of "the coach and I don't get along". Sad.

If anyone can ferret out what's going on at Minnesota, I believe it will be long-time Gopher fan and blogger Ted.
