Four months and 33 double-doubles later, the Oklahoma center has become the first freshman selected for The Associated Press All-America team in women's basketball.

Young led Baylor to the national championship last year and came back with a solid senior season, averaging 22.2 points and 10 rebounds and becoming just the fourth Division I player to reach 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds, 300 steals and 300 assists.

And only one Connectican on the list, in an honorable-mention position. Proving that not all of the womens basketball media hail from Bristol.

Courtney Paris, Oklahoma, 6-4, freshman, 21.4 ppg, 15.1 rpg, 111 blocks, .611 fg pct (30, 184).

Sophia Young, Baylor, 6-1, senior, 22.2 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 2.1 apg, 67 steals (25, 183).

Just when I was gonna say that it was nice that we wouldn't have do debate whether Courtney or Sophia was "more first-teamy" than the other, you gotta post a link with the vote totals, Swok!! You've done it now.

I'll start I guess. How could anyone possibly deserve to have more votes than blah blah blah bbbllllllaaaaahhh.... oh nevermind :) :) :)

On another board, they mention that NC's Erlana Larkins is the obvious omission off of Teams 1, 2, 3.

Stand-out Young named 1st team All-American

... "What a tremendous honor, what a tremendous kid she is and basketball player," head Coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson said. "She carried us on her shoulders. It's tough sometimes when you are expected to do a lot of things, and she didn't have the supporting cast around her that she did last year." ...

The 6-foot-1 senior forward from St. Vincent, The Grenadines, became Baylor’s first basketball player — men’s or women’s — to be named to the Associated Press first-team All-America team.

Great representation by the Big 12! Only conference to have 2 players on the 1st team. Way to go Courtey and Sophia!!!!

I'm glad to see Medders, Davis, Grant and Jackson get honorable mention. I do think Davis should have been on at least the 3rd team. But she's been under the radar all season, so it's great to see her get some notice for all that she's accomplished.

Congratulations, Sophia! We'll miss you. :BU:Thanks for providing the first link. I already knew Sophia was a great player but I learned something new! I had been thinking Baylor was not really a Texas school, it just happened to be located in Texas. No Guns up. A bear instead of cattle. No fight song which rags on TU. Not a single shade of red to be seen in uniforms - not even orange which can't be made without at least a drop of red. Baptist? OK - that certainly is not unTexan but after all, there are Baptist almost everywhere. Then, I clicked the link and saw something I've missed all of this time: The school newspaper is the LARIAT! Yippee eye ki AAAAA, git along lil doggie, BU IS TEXAN!

I'm VERY happy that Sophia and Courtney are on the first team this year, and both of them deserve it for very observable reasons. Sophia Young was better this year than last, and she had every team focusing on her far above anyone else all season long. And Courtney had a season that no other freshman has ever had in terms of overall accomplishment.

Sophia and Seimone were clearly on a level above every other forward and (in my opinion) guard in the game, and even though she was forced to play in the post this season, SY showed conclusively that she was one of the greatest players in the country this year.

WACO, Texas - The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has named Baylor senior Sophia Young a member of its 10 member All-American team. The 6-1 forward is one of four players to repeat from the 2005 squad. North Carolina's Ivory Latta and Sylvia Hatchell are the association's National Player and Coach of the Year and Oklahoma's Courtney Paris was chosen as the organization's Freshman of the Year.
