Dales-Schuman doesn't want to be a homer

If it appears ESPN women's basketball analyst Kara Lawson, a former Tennessee guard, is hyping up the Oklahoma women's team more than fellow analyst Stacey Dales-Schuman, a former Sooner star, there's a reason for it.
Dales-Schuman doesn't want to come across as a homer.

"It's funny. We'll talk and I'll say, 'I've got Tennessee and you've got Oklahoma,'" Dales-Schuman said.

The two guards never played against each other in college, but they go head-to-head in the WNBA. Lawson is in her fourth season for the defending champion Sacramento Monarchs, and Dales-Schuman will suit up for the expansion Chicago Sky after taking one year off from the league. The pair have hit it off in the studio, working with host Trey Wingo.

"She's very talented and so smart and so prepared," Dales-Schuman said of Lawson.

Dales-Schuman also has done her homework, sending e-mails to most of the top programs and talking with about 30 coaches in the past three weeks.

In the process, she has fielded many questions from coaches about why her former coach, Sherri Coale, is so successful. She said her answers include how well Coale has adapted in working Courtney Paris, her first true post player, into the motion offense without wrecking team chemistry and how she develops players' confidence.

"When I played for her, I could throw six passes into the stands and she'd say, 'That's OK, because you're going to make the next one.' That's so critical. I'm not surprised that a freshman like Paris has performed so well because Sherri gives you that confidence as a coach."

While Dales-Schuman declines to say if she thinks the Sooners will advance through the San Antonio Regional to the Final Four in Boston, she admitted the Sooners will be tough to beat.

"The bottom line is nobody can guard Courtney Paris. Nobody can. The only thing that is going to beat Oklahoma is if they beat themselves, if Courtney gets in foul trouble, if somebody gets injured, if Oklahoma's guards don't play well -- and they have been playing incredibly well."

Dales-Schuman won't have much of a break from basketball after the Final Four, reporting to Sky camp on April 23.

Also, shows the ratings for the women's two tourney games:

9.1 vs BYU on Monday nite
5.4 vs Pepperdine on Saturday

Top rated tourney view in OK....Texas vs NC State 14.2

Great numbers the women's team is drawing.

I too have noticed how objective Stacy is and how she may not take ready opportunities to tout OU. But when posed a specific question, she's at the ready with facts to illustrate and back up her point.

I like the duo of Stacy and Kara in studio. They are both well prepared and have excellent delivery. Even last year Lisa Leslie seemed to be out of her league when paired up with Stacy.

Trey, on the other hand, we could use a little more BU love from you! ;) We know, you're just being impartial too.

huh? Are they referring to this year's post-season?

Maybe that's a typo. Maybe they meant Tulsa vs NC State. Texas women weren't in it and the Texas men didn't play NC State, but the Tulsa women did.

Maybe they have their "UT"s confused but to think an OK paper would confuse Tulsa with Texas is pretty scary

Oh, I don't know. The Daily Oklahoman has confused psychic with psychosis among its owners for half a century.

Actually, they are referring to the second round game of the mens tournament between Texas and N.C. State. No women's tournament numbers besides OU's are given on that page.

Locally, Tulsa is TU. The only thing I can think of is the writer wrote TU and a fact checker thought it meant Texas. Dumb mistake.

I think labcoatguy is right.

Stacy and Kara have been great...except for the ragging on the #1 seed for Tenn stuff. But who's going to agree all the time. They are both very intelligent, well prepared and personable. I still think Stacy gets her point guard "you've got my ball and I want it look" from time to time, but it makes me laugh.

They are much better than Lisa Leslie or SWMNBN any day.

I do miss Robin Roberts as the "host". I think it would be better to have someone who knows WBB than Trey Wingo..he's ok, but...

i agree...with reservations because i have not really paid sufficient attention to give an informed opinion.............just as someone who has seen him, i would much prefer a woman..........or some guy who caught my attention........and not saying anything negative about trey........just sometimes people attract your attention and he does not attact mine.....(hum........i wonder just how important THAT is to anything......well, it SHOULD be :p )

robin roberts is enjoyable but guess she won't be doing this type of gig again............she is charasmatic, but i do wish she would give more analysis on good morning america instead of just reporting...........or maybe just ask some questions that have not been approved by bush and company

I think it would be better to have someone who knows WBB than Trey Wingo..he's ok, but...Trey seems to be getting better as we get deeper into the tournament, but maybe that's my bias since he's a Baylor boy.

Isn't it nice, though, that 2/3s of the booth are Big 12 graduates?

I tend to notice people's little 'ticks' having gone through journalism school and taking a number of public speaking classes. SDS has a cute one when she's trying to recall a stat or fact when making her point. She closes her eye lids for a second or two, then rebounds when her brain finds the cell running around in her head with the information. It makes me chuckle a little bit, b/c that has alway been my challenge too. When put on the spot, I tend to forget the point or best word I want to use, but then remember it when the moment has past and I'm by myself. :D

I also have noticed the non-homer factor on SDS' part, but have seen Kara not hold back when boasting any fact or argument in favor of Tenn. It's not that bad, but I'm sitting on my sofa wanting to hear Stacey reply in OU's favor whenever Kara does it, but Stacey doesn't budge.

As far as Wingo was his NameO,' I could take him or leave him. Robin did always project a genuine smile and overall spirit when behind the desk no matter what was going on. I kind of like that. Hey, at least we don't have to put up with all of the antics: 'IT'S TIME TO GET A TO B A B Y!,' 'PTP'r — PRIME TIME PLAYER,' and 'DIAPER DANDIES.'

What, no one liked Rece Davis?I did! I thought he interacted very well with SD/S. I didn't really care for Robin Roberts all she could talk about was UCONN. Her phrase of "Come-own back" before every commercial break drove me nuts.

Plus, I didn't care for the way Kara Lawson laid into Ohio State for losing to BC "when you get a number 1 seed the "privilege" of being chosen for that honor deems it necessary to play like a number 1 seed. You have a "responsibility" to prove how you're one the best four teams in the nation".

Tennessee is the two seed girl get over it. Hasn't she ever watched a NCAA Basketball tourney upsets happen they're part of and good for the game.

VERY TRUE! I do not like Dukie V. at all. He always gets muted. I even mute those stupid DiGiorno commercials with him. I also mute those annoying Pizza Hut commercials with Jessica Simpson. What the hell, seriously? "These bites were made for poppin'"????? I always sing the line, "This ad was made for mutin'" as I hit the mute button.

I love Stacey Dales Schuman! She gets better every season. It would be nice to hear her talk about OU more, but at the same time I think it is cool that she doesn't. She is so professional.

I'm sure SDS does plenty of talking when the camera's are off. She has a lot of pride in her school.

I still remember reading about Stacey prior to her freshman year, wondering if she could be as good as described. Then, the first game she tore her ACL! I was afraid I'd never get to see the talent that Sherri had described. Who could have dreamed what would transpire since those days.

well that is SO BOGUS .......kara is not someone who appeals to me but that does not make her bad, HOWEVER, that statement of a "privilege"..........such BS.............like ohio state was GIVEN the no 1 seed and did not earn it.............like they said to themselves...."well, i don't want to play today so who cares?......" ...........suppose all commentators make stupid statements.........hope she realizes how stupid hers was
