I guess she wasn't good enough for the Big 12 coaches, but I think she'd rather have this award for collegiate player of the year!
Way to go Sheila!!!
PS---Mulkey was the first player to ever receive the award in 1984.
WOW! That's great Bear!
Sheila was a very special player this year, and the Big 12 clan knows it!
Now the rest of the country can know it as well!

She was the most underrated player in the country this year. Congratulations! The rest of the country will find out a LOT about her in the next three weeks! http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
Bear, I see where the Naismith awards weren't given out until April last year.
Why do you suppose the awards were given out 4 weeks earlier this year, and do you know why they decided to move the awards up from April 5th this year?
Do some fast talking Bear, I'm not particularly in the mood for jokes.

I am EXTREMELY happy for Sheila Lambert! Not only does she deserve this honor, but she also comes from my alma mater of Grayson County Junior College. Coach Bill Brock, who was Lambert's coach at Grayson (and now is Mulkey's assistant), was my coach in the 6th grade!
Well, okay, this IS extremely confusing. There is a "Naismith" award (best overall player), and a "Francis Pomeroy Naismith" award, (best player 5'8'' and under). They're different. Ruth Riley won the Naismith last year, but Niele Ivey won the FP Naismith. Lambert just won the FPN award. That's the explanation, I think.
Ahaaaa... very interesting.

According to a fan on ESPN:
"It's not THE Naismith. It's the Frances Pomeroy Naismith for players 5-8 and under. So neither Taurasi not Welle were eligible."
oops sorry--didn't see the response above before posting this.

Ya'll beat me to my correction http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
I figured there was only one Naismith award (silly me) given out to POY. After reading the article in depth, it was for the best player 5-8 and under. Here's a novel idea! Let's not have 2 major awards with the same last name, so as not to confuse poor suckers like me.
