Congrats to Dales
OU Dales Earn Academic All-America Basketball Honors
Sooner guard is the only player to earn academic and athletic All-American honors in
the same year
March 11, 2002
NORMAN, Okla. - Senior point guard Stacey Dales has been named
to the Verizon Academic All-America® Women's Basketball first team
and was voted the Verizon Academic All-America Team Member of
the Year as chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of
America (CoSIDA). Dales received second team Academic
All-American honors last year, becoming the first player in OU women's
basketball history to earn academic and athletic All-American honors
in the same year.
Dales, a Naismith Player of the Year finalist, will leave Oklahoma as the
school and Big 12 Conference all-time assists leader. She has 734 as
OU heads into NCAA play, which ranks 27th on the NCAA all-time list.
The Canadian recently repeated her Big 12 Player of the Year honors
after leading Oklahoma to a league best 14-2 record. The
communication major tops the team with 17.3 points and 5.0 assists per
game. She also averaged 22.3 ppg, 6.0 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.3
steals and shot 60.5 percent from the field and 52.9 percentage from
behind the arc during OU's Big 12 Tournament title run that earned her
most valuable player honors Saturday.
"I'm very thrilled to be named an Academic All-American and particularly to be voted as the
Academic All-America Team Member of the Year," Dales said. "It's a huge honor and
something that I think is often overlooked in athletic endeavors. I'm very proud to represent the
University of Oklahoma this way.
"We have whole team of Academic All-Americans. Everyone excels in the classroom because
it's a point of emphasis on our team. We take a lot of pride in academics and how we balance
the two (athletics and academics)."
