Lady Bears, Ags after same reward
In Kim Mulkey-Robertson's one-track mind, the next game is always the biggest. This time, she's right.
Since Sunday's 81-77 overtime loss to Oklahoma ended any hopes of a repeat Big 12 championship, the 12th-ranked Baylor Lady Bears (17-5, 7-4) play upstart, 21st-ranked Texas A&M (19-5, 8-3) at 7 tonight at Reed Arena with Big 12 Tournament seeding on the line.
“What's on the line?” Mulkey-Robertson said. “Is finishing second in the league any better than finishing third? To me, the only pressure we have is self-induced in that we want to win some of these close games. We're not the same team that won it last year. We have our own identity, and we're pretty darn good.”

COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Texas A&M Athletics has teamed with local home builder Campbell Custom Homes to offer $1 admission to the No. 24-ranked Aggies’ game against defending national champion No. 12 Baylor on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Reed Arena.
Dollar tickets must be purchased in person at the Reed Arena Box Office or at the Athletic Ticket Center at Kyle Field. Fans will also enjoy $1 hot dogs and $1 Coke products. Blair’s goal is to set a new attendance record at Reed Arena for women’s basketball.
The Aggies are in second place in the Big 12 Conference with a 19-5 overall record and a 8-3 mark in the league. A&M won three games in seven days last week by topping Texas Tech at home before beating Texas and Nebraska on the road.

We're definitely fired up down in Aggieland. This game has been hyped up for 2 weeks now with a $1 Day promotion which includes $1 tickets, hot dogs and drinks. According to the Dallas Morning News, 6,200 non-student tickets have already been sold as of last night. To give you an idea of what that means to us, the 2nd largest crowd in school history is 5,565. 7 can't get here soon enough. Should be a great one.

I like the free throw "traditions" for Texas A&M. On some shots, the remain silent until just before the shot and then they jump up and shout right at the shot; other times, the do a mini-wave on that side of the court. I can imagine it would be hard to keep THAT out of your mind

You know, I'm wondering if the size of the crowd didn't actually contribute to the problems that TAMU was having, at least in the first 10 minutes or so. And by that time they had dug themselves a huge hole. They have never played in front of anywhere near that many at home. A bad case of nerves maybe? Baylor is more used to playing in front of the big crowds, whether at home or on the road.

He deserved his T's, but the ref deserved to be shot for not making the call. Tisdale I believe tackled A'qua and the ref turned waved it off as a no call. Earlier in the game the ref that gave him his second T called a foul on La Toya when the same thing happened, that just happened to be her 5th.
Baylor wins this game regardless of officiating, and I congratulate them on a great game. Was nice to see atleast one team play solid basketball. And official attendence for the game was 11,088 and 10,000 booed the officials for the last 7 minutes. I think even the Baylor fans were booing thats how bad it was.

“I deserved the first T, but didn’t deserve the second T,” Blair said. “But it was a well-officiated game. We’ve got the best officials in the country.”I know that the coaches cannot comment negatively on the refs officially, but I respectfully disagree with Coach Blair on this one. The best? They aren't even average!

After the example of officiating performed today I think even KMR would have paid the fine had he spoken his mind. 3 blind mice could have called a better game. Absolutely horrible on both ends of the court, constantly out of position to make calls, deciding after the result of the shot if there was a foul. I could go on, but am afraid I'll start cussing and dont want to get into that on this board. The female official needs to be fired immediately, most blatant job of helping the 'name' team I've ever seen.

Wow... That was rough. Couple of comments:
1. The crowd was great throughout the game considering the score. I haven't ever heard Reed much louder than when Coach Blair got tossed. I just hope the ones that showed up for the first time realize that was the worst game the ladies have played all year and give them another chance (maybe next week when Texas is in town).
2. It looked like we came out extremely tight and were never able to get into the flow of the game. I can't say that I'm entirely surprised at this though. The game was so hyped up and the crowd was close to five times the average size.
3. Yes, the refs were horrific. Probably the worst I've ever seen. I don't really want to get into it much more than that. Even with a perfectly officiated game though, we still lose big.
4. I don't remember a single time we pressed in the first half. I'm not sure why, but I felt like we were sitting back and letting Baylor run their half court offense instead of forcing the issue. It just didn't seem like we were playing our game.
5. I fully expect our team to bounce back and come out fired up and ready to play in Norman on Saturday. This team (and coach) are too tough to let this one game get to them.
6. Baylor seems to be primed for another run deep into the tourney, especially if their backcourt can play as well as they did tonight. This is still a very talented and extremely coached squad.

Baylor halts winning fortunes for Texas A&M -- Brent Zwerneman, San Antonio Express-News Staff Writer
COLLEGE STATION — Texas A&M offered up dollar hot dogs and dollar tickets to entice fans to Reed Arena on Wednesday night as the Aggies met Baylor.
The 12th-ranked Bears countered with an alluring entrée a tad more priceless than A&M's tempting dollar menu: the experience of playing with a passion and focus in rowdy, hostile environs that comes with being national champions.
Baylor whipped No. 21 A&M 84-59 before a record crowd of 11,088 subdued fans, earning its largest margin of victory over a ranked opponent.
"Silencing the crowd is very motivating," Baylor guard Chameka Scott said.
A&M (19-6, 8-4 Big 12) — winners of three consecutive games against Texas Tech, Texas and Nebraska — had hoped to surge another step under third-year coach Gary Blair.
Baylor had other ideas from the opening tip, as the Bears (18-5, 8-4) quickly took the crowd out of the game with sharp-shooting by Sophia Young and Abiola Wabara.
"I don't know if we were still waiting in the hot-dog lines or what," Blair said. "I don't know what happened."
With the Bears up comfortably by 16 points with six minutes remaining in the first half, Baylor coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson was still yelling at officials and clenching her fists — and her team matched that fervor throughout.
"(The Bears) should have been matching our intensity," A&M guard A'Quonesia Franklin said. "But we had to match theirs."
Baylor sprang to an 18-6 lead eight minutes into the game and led 42-23 at the break. Scott drained a 3-pointer as time wound down on the first half to lift Baylor to its 19-point lead. Baylor made 7 of 11 3-pointers (63.6 percent) and shot 28 of 51 from the field (54.9 percent). Young led the Bears with 16 points.
"I thought we set the tone early that, hey, if you're going to beat us, you're going to have to bring your best," Mulkey-Robertson said. "Because we've come to play."
Mulkey-Robertson seemed to enjoy the large crowd, and even motioned to a heckling fan to "come on" while strolling off the court at halftime. Afterward she said she'd welcome a promotional night at Baylor that would help fire up her home fans.
"But those cheap Baptists won't let us sell dollar hot dogs," she joked.
Blair didn't have as comical a night. He was ejected for the first time in his career after receiving back-to-back technical fouls in the second half.
"Coach Blair came walking out further on the court after receiving the first technical foul, which automatically warrants a second technical foul," referee Clarke Stevens said. http://www.mysanantonio.com/sports/basketball/college/stories/MYSA021606.10C.BKWaggies.baylor.17fedaff.htmlSo, will those "cheap Baptists" at Baylor accept Kim's challenge to serve dollar hot dogs on Sunday? ;)

BCS Eagle (http://www.aggiesports.com/stories/021606/wbasketball_20060216014.php)
"Baylor just flat outplayed us in every aspect of the game," Aggie head coach Gary Blair said. "That was just a butt-kicking, and I can take it, and we will be better because of it.
Blair wasn't around to see the finish after getting tossed with 8:57 left in the game when he got upset over a non-call, and was hit with consecutive technical fouls.
"We got in front of [Anglea] Tisdale, and I thought it was a charge, the referee thought it was a block," Blair said. "I got the first T because I was off the bench.
"I didn't say a word to deserve the second T."
According to a statement from lead official Clarke Stevens, Blair got the first technical "for coming out on the floor and arguing a call."
"Then, according to bench decorum rules and guidelines that we abide by, the coach cannot be out of the coaching box for any further reason," Clarke said. "And coach Blair came walking further on the court after receiving the first technical foul which automatically warrants a second technical foul."
Sounds a bit unfair and inconsistent to me given what goes on all the time on the sidelines. You can't call it against one team and throw the coach out of the game and then not call it against another. It's like that T against OU for bench decorum which was just plain silly since they don't appear to be calling it on other teams.

Don't you think Gary might have been being "just a little" sarcastic? :DNow I do think so. However, at 1AM, when I read that article and that post, I wasn't think of that statement in light of the game (I really wasn't thinking) and was just shocked to see such words.
Robin
02-16-2006, 11:51 AM
I was at the game, and I was a little surprised by the first technical and quite surprised by the second. From where I was sitting, it was very difficult to determine what happened on the play. From way up in section 217, it really looked like just a collision, and not particularly a foul on anyone, but I'll be the first to admit that I didn't have the best vantage point. I was surprised by the first "T" because I had seen both Coach Blair and KMR venture out onto the court earlier in the game. I remember asking NewBearFan if she saw what happened because I was surprised to see Coach Blair leaving the court, but all she could tell me was that they had issued another T and ejected him. I couldn't see everything, but it did seem a bit undeserved to me.
Because the Aggies were not particularly fiery when all of this took place, I even heard speculation that maybe Coach Blair intentionally drew the call in order to fire up the team, but I have no idea if whether or not that was the case. It surely got the great crowd of Ags excited, though!
Other than that, I'm not sure the officiating benefited either team particularly; in my opinion, it was pretty uneven and inconsistent all across the court.
Icecream_Ag
02-16-2006, 12:43 PM
Robin, you are right that officiating had nothing to do with the outcome. As I've said twice already, Baylor wins that game regardless. It was a good example of solid basketball by the Lady Bears, I just wish it wasnt against A&M. The first T that Blair got was for good reason. A'qua had position to defend the inbound pass and Tisdale ran over/threw her down, looked more like a tackle then trying to get around her. The second T on Blair was BS. KMR was in practically in the paint 2-3 times in the first half and didnt even get a warning. It was a case of one official covering anothers butt. We've had the two male refs in games before and knew they were bad, but they looked good compared to the female official.
