So with the Big 12 out with their 10th anniversary team, who would you put on an all decade team from your school?

I'd go:

Stacy Freese
Megan Taylor
Angie Welle
Jayme Olsen
One of the Lindsey's - Medders or Wilson - not sure which, though I think Medders may have a more complete game

Edwina Brown
Stacy Stephens
Jamie Carey
Heather Schreiber
Tiffany Jackson

Angie Jo Ogletree was the first Longhorn basketball player to be my “favorite”. She came off the bench as a senior and I was always thrilled to see her enter the game.

Starters

Point Guard: Nicole Kubik
The high school ace from Cambridge, Nebraska took the quarterback job in 1997-1998 and never looked back. A heady two-way threat who lead three consecutive Husker NCAA tournament bids.

Off Guard: Anna DeForge
One of the best players in Husker history. DeForge rallied Nebraska through resurgent seasons in 1995-1996 and 1997-1998. Both years where Nebraska fought back to make the NCAA tournament after failing to qualify the previous year.

Center: Kelsey Griffin
Only Karen Jennings has outdone the sterling effort of our freshman center thus far..and the best is yet to come. We hope :)

Power Forward: Charlie Rogers
"Chuck" played bigger than her skinny frame in every game she played in. Solid skills in the paint and in the perimeter combined with the heart of a lion. One of grittiest competitors ever to wear scarlet and cream in any sport.

Small Forward: Keisha Cannon-Johnson
The only bright light through the dark end of the Sanderford era. Led the team in scoring and rebounding during "The Winter Of Discontent" (2001-2002), and cameback from a redshirt season to lead the team to the WNIT in her final year.

Reserves

Point Guard: LaToya Doage
Angela Beck's Darda Buggy starter for 2 years, Doage quarterbacked the Huskers 1996 NCAA qualifier, then was drafted by Beck to run the point for the ABL's San Jose Lasers.

Defensive Specialist: Jami Kubik
On paper, Jami Kubik would have made a great UNK Antelope. But Kubik rose from last girl on the bench to that girl who stays in your shirt. Her greatest highlight of her career was in the 1997 preseason WNIT final against a powerful Connecticut team. Kubik drew All-America Nykesha Sales as an assignment and made for a frustrating evening for the UConn superstar. Sales said after the game that Kubik was one of most difficult she had faced.

Backup Center: Pyra Aarden
Pyra Aarden was as sweet and pleasant as she was huge (6'4 1/2" 200+). A gentle giant with a gentle soul, who became doberman tough in the paint. In 1996 with NCAA hopes hanging in the balance, Aarden anchored Nebraska through a season ending stretch where she barely left the floor, including two key blocks in triple overtime to seal a Husker upset over the ranked and deadly Colorado Buffaloes.

Forward/Center: Emily Thompson
Thompson manned two positions, but stepped to the fore in the Huskers 23 win campaign in 1997-1998, where Thompson split time at forward and center that developed throughout the season culminating with a dominant clutch effort to beat a strong rebounding New Mexico team in the first round of the '98 NCAA tournament and powered a courageous effort in round two in a loss to Old Domnion.

Forward/Guard: Tina McClain
A forgotten standout. McClain was the teams #2 scorer in 1995-1996. Best known for very smooth moves on the block. She was a prehistoric Sophia Young.

Reserve Forward: Naciska "Cisco" Gilmore
Gilmore was mostly a sixth man in her Nebraska career, but she won quite a few games for the Huskers coming off the bench with her instant scoring and rebounding. Was woefully underused in her career, but still a good one to have.

Reserve Guard: Kiera Hardy
Nebraska first first-team All Big 12 team selection since the Clinton Administration. A quick guard with rapid-fire scoring ability. Hardy shined with the start of the Connie Yori era and hasn't looked back...And she isn't done yet.

Team Managers: Kate Galligan, Jina Johansen, Brooke Schwartz

The first 4 are easy:

Sophia Young - With a chance she'll end up this year as the Big 12 record holder in points and rebounds, it's pretty obvious she's the #1 Baylor player of this era. If we're gonna make this a "real" team with every position represented, she'll have to make do as a small forward.

Sheila Lambert - Still responsible for more "Did I really just see what I thought I saw" moves/passes than any other women's player I've ever seen. She only played two years, but if you take her career totals and figure them into a four-year career, she'd have 2600 pts (easily #1 in the Big 12) 800 assists (#1 until Erin blows by that mark this year) and 400 steals (#4).

Danielle Crockrum - Silky smooth spin moves and a great turnaround jumper. Could be relentless on the boards as well. I still remember watching her amazing 41 point 22 rebound game at A&M.

Steffanie Blackmon - Not as smooth as Danielle or Sophia, Stef was an intense, consistent workhorse in the paint.

The fifth spot is harder to pick, but I'm gonna go with... a tie

Lara Webb - Also only a two year player, but she was the leader on the 1997 team that almost won the WNIT. Very good shooter and passer, she averaged 17 pts and 5 assists in her two years. She was recently honored at halftime of a game, and is coaching in the Dallas area now.

and Jessika Stratton - from a pure numbers point of view she's probably not the choice, but she was our major outside shooting threat through most of her career, and definitely the choice for character, positive and winning attitude, and being a great role model for the kind of person you'd like to represent your school.

Sophia Young - what else can be said about her. I still remember the first time I saw her at Baylor. It was at a practice, her freshman year. She didn't really stand out among all the other players . . . that is, until she jumped. I had never seen a woman have that kind of hops! And she had such skinny legs! She has developed her game so much more since then. It's truly been a pleasure to watch Sophia over her career.

Danielle Crockrum - I thought Danielle had the best jumping ability for a woman that I'd ever seen, until Sophia came along, that is. :) Danielle reminded me of a jumping jack. She could get back up in the air so quickly that it didn't seem real. And she expanded her game a lot under Kim.

Steffanie Blackmon - I was so excited when I learned that Stef and Tiff had committed to Baylor. Playing at Rowlett HS here in the Dallas area, I knew that Steffanie had led this area's Class 5A in scoring her senior year and was also at the top of the stats in rebounding. Plus I'd heard unofficial great 'reports' about her game from a golfing buddy, whose daughter had played against her in AAU ball.

Sheila Lambert - she had a little more flash to her game than I was used to, but I couldn't really argue with most of the results. It sorta made me wish I'd had some of that ability. :) I think her game and mindset helped set the stage for the current Baylor program (along with a little help along the way from Kim).

Jessika Stratton - she embodies so many great things about watching the Lady Bears team over the years. Hard work, perserverance, team play, steadiness. How my heart ached for her at the end of the Tennessee game. But I know that Jessika is a strong woman and that even that moment helped strengthen her character.

Well, I nearly copied Spooky's list exactly. But in the end my heart won out. Go Jess!

My picks would be these:

Stacy Frese: She transferred from Iowa and helped put ISU on the map. We were on our way when Fennelly got here, but with Stacy in place at point, great things were going to happen for us. Makes me wonder what she might have done had she come to ISU to begin with.

Megan Taylor: Megan could do everything and DID. I doubt there was a coach in the conference that wasn't happy to see her play against them for the last time her senior year. She was a difference maker and could carry the team when they needed her to (remember that Big 12 championship game in '01, OU? What a battle and what an incredible game by Taylor). Until Angie Welle's senior season, Megan held school records for rebounds and scoring.

Anne O'Neil: Another transfer (from Illinois) that made a difference over the three years she was in Ames. Anything she could do for the team or to make herself a better player, she did. She retooled her free throw shot and rarely missed after that. She retooled her 3 point shot and led the nation in 3 pt % for most of her senior season. Another player who could do anything the team needed on the floor.

Angie Welle: Angie deserves to be here and on just about any all-conference list. She owns the ISU career scoring and rebounding records as well as many other categories in our record books. Her numbers went up every year she played and was about as reliable as they would come on the floor. The girl from Fargo was so much fun to watch and made it look so easy.

Lindsey Wilson: Underrated, IMO. Because she was the ONLY consistent offense her senior season, her percentages are a little lower and people don't always realize how great she was all four years she played here. She was another "do everything" player who could take over a game. Lindsey was fearless on the floor and not afraid to do what it took to win. If I'm not mistaken, she quietly holds second place for all-time scoring at ISU (possibly third - either right before or after Megan Taylor).

Honorable mentions: Mary Fox, Tracy Gahan, Jayme Olson, Lyndsey Medders, Desiree Francis and Janell Grimm

PS: thanks to ISU40 for reminding me about Desiree. How could I forget her? - the engineer of my favorite half of ISU basketball ever (hitting three consecutive 3s in 90 seconds to get us back in the game against Illinois in the second round of the NCAA Tourney in 2000. When that third three dropped, it was the loudest I have ever heard Hilton for a women's game!).

I can't believe I left off Anne O'Neil. YIKES...the memory is going. I'd also give honorable mention to Monica Huelman. She was a role player, but hit maybe the biggest 3 in the history of the program to pull us even with UCONN in the Sweet 16.

First Team:
Karensa Barr - One of the best point guards to ever play for Missouri

Latoya Bond - Currently showing the conference just how good she can be

Evan Unrau - Excellent all around player. I don't believe she received the recognition she deserved while playing for Mizzou.

Amanda Lassiter - Only played for Mizzou for two years but she was great while she was here. Currently playing in the WNBA.

Kesha Bonds - Incredible rebounder and scorer.

Second Team:

Julie Helm - Good offensive player.

Tracy Lozier - She could really change a game if she got hot shooting 3's.

Stretch James - One of the best shot blockers ever at Missouri. Great rebounder and steady offensive production.

Marlena Williams - Played with Amanda Lassiter and the two of them gave Mizzou one of its best teams ever. Marlena also was drafted by the WNBA.

Tracy Franklin - Good offensive player and good all around hustle.

Jia Perkins did not

Tech Fans,

I'm not trying to hijack this thread. However I would like to understand why there would be any animosity towards Jia Perkins. Plenette sat out a season for disciplinary reasons, then came back the next season with attitude adjusted and made big contributions to the Tech program. Props to her for her maturity and determination. Jia Perkins was one heck of a basketball player who seemed to represent Texas Tech well. She made a mistake and had to leave the team because of it. However it's difficult to see why this would be held against her. Wasn't this her senior season, making it impossible to come back? No doubt her absence hurt the Red Raiders. However I can't see that's reason enough to call her out.

Jia knew at the time games began what her status was. She put several people in a bad situation by not informing those who needed to know up front what had happened. It was much more than a kid made a mistake and she had to deal with it. She just didn't wake up in the second week of January realizing this because she had a baby less than 5 months later.

There were multiple layers of bad feelings and poor judgement by several people, not just Jia, resulting in consequences that most outsiders never saw. IMO, in some ways, the fallout from that episode still plagues the team today.

It is NOT just a matter of medical redshirting the entire year and coming back to play that I refer to, although that could have been done.

Still, she is one of the greatest LRs of the Big 12 era and certainly deserves to be recognized for her play on the court.
