This is an EXCELLENT game so far...
Sherri needs to pull Britney though.
ARGH &^#&$^#&^#*#*$&......Britney pulled for Kendra and SHE turns the ball over.
ok, remember what I was saying about putting me in the pessimist category when it came to short PG's.......well, I reiterate my point.

swok34

I think it's 21-13. Kendra Moore of all people was standing unter the basket by herself. Leah Rush has 2 fouls trying to guard Sophia.
Wow.....rough stuff. Tisdale with 2 fouls now 23-15 and cp at the line; nope.
We have a lot of options. An early 8-10 point lead isn't really a big concern.
swok34
01-21-2006, 07:27 PM
That was funny......CP trying to take a charge. OU has 7 turnovers..
uh oh, CP is drawing the fouls and KMR is not happy right now.
Wow, you all should see the battle going on between CP and Wabara.
woah......this crowd is not happy.
Jennifer
01-21-2006, 07:32 PM
Turnovers are killing OU. Both teams are shooting well--OU 50% to Baylor's 67%.
swok34
01-21-2006, 07:38 PM
If Sherri's not careful....she could pick up a technical.
Just a little bit pissed......still.
Wohooooo..........leave Britney standing by herself and she burns 'em....
now it's 27-25 Baylor with 5 minutes to go in the first.
Jennifer

31-25 Baylor with 4 to go....
I don't know Jennifer, these announcers don't know who anyone is. I haven't gone back and watched the TTU tape for that very reason. I've never cared for these announcers; they've been working with Sooner Sports Network for ?3 years now.

Announcers are making comments on how the Baylor players (Wabara and Abiola specifically) are conducting themselves. Said Wabara got in Brown's face, bowing up possibly? Anything to that?
Several times they've mentioned actions that "are very uncalled for".
I wish I could watch. :(

Jennifer.....Wabara can have a short fuse, at least she did in one of the NCAA games last season. Britney stayed right with her and they had some words, Britney didn't back down either...
It's incredibly physical, but I pretty much expected as much.
Wabara and Abiola are the same person.
The intimidation games aren't going to work. If anything they will backfire. We are a collegial conference, and if any team or the players thereof choose to use intimidation tactics against any opponent, it will only serve as a negative in the long run.
I'm just sayin. We won't back down.

britney and wabara had tied the ball up and were fighting for it........looked like to me that britney thought maybe wabara yanked after the whistle and got in wabara's face......just looking and wabara just looking down at her.......really pretty funny......chelsi got her hands on britney and turned her
or maybe wabara did not yank the ball, maybe it was just the fact that wabara was looking leaning over a little looking down and britney....i did not think it was a big deal..................both teams are just pumped up....playing hard

Definitely one of the "nobody deserved to lose" games. I can't complain about much...awesome effort, awesome crowd, 2 great teams. I guess I can complain about leaving a player wide open twice in the last minute, but like everything else you can give Courtney some credit for that too. I did say that when we lose to OU it's often cause an unsung player goes off on us. Laura Andrews did it a few years ago and Kendra stepped up today.
Two years ago, we lost all the close ones, and last year was the reverse. It's looking like we're trending backwards here.
More once I settle in a bit.

This was a game between two heavyweights who traded punches. If it hadn't been Kendra, it could have been Sophia, or Tisdale, or Leah. Nobody backed off throughout this game.
One of the most satisfying things is that the OU/Baylor thread had over 8,000 views on OUInsider, whereas the men's thread had about 2,400. Women's basketball has arrived.

Well, I just got home. Before I go cry I thought I would post my thoughts on the game.
The first half the two top players (Courtney Paris and Sophia Young) were being handled quite well by their opponent. Unfortunately for us, I think that Courtney learned a very valuable lesson tonite... at half-time. She came out and played with more control and had better ball protection than she did in the half. Our inability to slow her down for two halves hurt us.
I had dinner with some family friends that are OU grads that drove in to watch the game. I told them that OU had the edge because they had the outside presence that we did not. That outside presence, in my opinion, cost us the game. That is not to knock Courtney, but I think we answered Courtney well on the inside (having as many players with FGs, I think, demonstrates that). However, we couldn't answer on the outside, both defensively (stopping OU) or offensively (we couldn't hit threes; heck, we couldn't take them, OU did such a good job defending the perimeter).
As to gameplay, both teams played with a tremendous amount of passion. This passion was demonstrated "best" when Abi and the OU player (forgive me for not remembering her name) exchanged words (fortunately for both teams, only words). There was a tremendous amount of pushing, shoving, and moving going on at each end of the court. I'm thankful the refs weren't calling a really tight game or else I don't think either team could have mustered enough players to finish the game.
In the end, it was a great game and OU's "complete package" coupled with Baylor's inability to sink a bucket in what seemed like the last 10 minutes cost us the game. Oklahoma has the best team in the Big 12 right now, but even recognizing that doesn't make it hurt any worse.
P.S., this league has some awesome young players and I got to see two teams of them tonite. The next four years (at least) are going to be awesome in the Big 12!

KMR: "I tried to get a timeout. If you are going lose, she would definitely be the one I would want taking the shot."
Chemeka: "Some people just got mixed up on who they were guarding and we wanted Moore to take that shot. We were begging her to take it all night and she stepped up and made it."
(NOT knocking BU! Just commenting on getting what you wish for ;) )

I didn't realize Baylor had so little depth. Wabara and Scott each played 40 minutes. THeir only subs played 4, 5, and 3 minutes.

I think Baylor has very YOUNG depth. Wow, didn't realize the Courtney only sat for a minute. You do have to give some credit to CP because she changes the way teams guard you. Britney Brown was open the entire night; thus so was Kendra Moore. Why? So they could put two on CP.

They are young, aren't they?Very, which makes for a frustrating year this year, but gives me hope for next year. Its worth noting that next years team will be quite young, since we will have 5 freshmen, 4 sophomores, 1 junior, and 3 seniors. Well, at least that's the roster as of today. I just popped over to the ESPN wcbb message boards to see what was going on.
Man, the negativity, harrassing posters, etc. is nuts. One poster was just ragging unbelievably on Baylor, saying the nastiest things. The vibe here is SO much better. I had to post a couple of things in defense of Baylor (gotta defend fellow Big 12 teams).
I just wanted to say how much I appreciate this board and all the posters from all the teams. The Big 12 is undoubtedly the classiest conference and we have the classiest fans (even Texas fans--just kidding :D )
Anyway, thanks for having such a great place to come and discuss wcbb.
Those who know me know that I'm just hopelessly and completely an OU homer, no matter what sport or who we play. But I am completely at a loss as to why I actually black out during the most important games that the Sooners play.
While I don't know why it happens, I guess that I should be grateful that I am spared those times when my own team falls apart and loses, even if I think that they should always win.
Bit I do feel cheated tonight. We were going right to the finish and then BAM my mind would not handle any more. I'm seriously and semideliriously happy that the Sooners won, but why my excitement meter shuts me out of such moments is beyond me.
I suspect that it dates back to the days when all I knew about OU was that my family was part of what OU is, and that I'd never known our (football) team to lose a game. By the way, those "years" are specifically 1953-1957.
But it's disappointing to me that somewhere within my constitution there is a cutoff switch that sometimes doesn't allow me to enjoy the most precious moments live as they happen.
I've warned people that this team is one to be seriously respected, but I guess that maybe even I didn't think OU would win in Waco. I was wrong and right at the same time, and I feel great about our win, while at the same time I anguish about the pain of Baylor.
I really wish that life was simpler but it's not. If someone knows how to turn off the women's basketball overexcitement switch, please let me know, because to shut down over the excitement of an early-season Big 12 game is not exactly my modern game plan.
giraffespots, you are entirely correct.
We have a classy conference, and great coaches and fans. I honestly don't care what they say in places like the ESPN board, because I instantly recognize what we have that they lack.
And what it is that we have is a love and caring for the game, a respect for our competitors, and an utter lack of desire to put others down in an attempt to make us seem even better than who we are.
We are just fine, we are the Big 12. I could not be prouder of who we are. And if others have problem with that, then I suggest that they should seek counseling, because no conference fans that I know really care about their problems.
Except in a human sort of way.

“I had to play Tissy in the first half with two fouls, and I don't like to do that,” Mulkey-Robertson said. “But I felt the flow of the game changing and had to put her back in there. Jordan (Davis) and Jhasmin (Player) went in and just couldn't get in the flow, and we lost a little momentum at that time.”
Jordan, Jhasmin and Rachel Allison played a combined total of twelve minutes for Baylor. Latoya Wyatt didn't play at all. On the other hand, no one played less than 15 minutes for Oklahoma.
The Ferrell Center clean-up crew, which "Coach Kim" praises in a radio spot before each game, had a messy job to do last night.
"No coach feels good after a loss,” Mulkey-Robertson said. “But after a game like that, when you spill your guts on the floor and play your hearts out, you walk off that floor and say, ‘Maybe one of these days we'll hit that shot.' You wish them good luck and move on.”

Congrats to OU on the win. It was a very good game and one that I'm still re-playing over and over in my head this morning. It's games like this that help spread the passion for the women's game. As someone said earlier, too bad that anyone had to come out on the short end of the score.
I'm proud of the Lady Bears' play. They gave the Sooners a good run. And they defended pretty much as planned. Sometimes those left open step up and bite you . . . as happened last night . . . and as Chelsea proved a few times last year. Give the Sooners credit. They fought a hard battle and came out on top.

My stepbrother did graduate with her though. I have known that the girl is GOOD for a long time now. I am really hoping that she gets lots of recognition after last night. I really want this to boost her confidence. She came in under the radar because of the knee injury her senior year. I don't think many people realize what she is really capable of when she is at the top of her game.
Ardmore is a powerhouse in both boys and girls basketball and Kendra Moore is truly a legend there. I am so happy for her. She represents Ardmore very well.
OK, so this next part is a little off topic, but writing this made me really reflect on one of my earliest basketball memories..................
Southern Oklahoma just has some great girls basketball. I can remember watching my older cousin play back in the very early 90's. The days of 6 on 6. They were playing Atoka H.S. Atoka had this Robinson girl that just dominated. Everyone was afraid of guarding the girl that mixed her shoes (she would wear a white shoe on one foot and a black one of the other). My cousin's coach told her team, "If she gets past you just let her go." The only way to stop her was to foul and risk a three-point play. I wonder what she is up to now? :p

Thanks for the memories, OSUCowgirls!
My folks recall seeing Caton Hill play in the Mid-America tourney in Ada, OK back in her Ada High days. My dad says you could tell right away that Caton was on a different level than most all the other players, and remembers telling my mom that "that girl will go places". He called that one right, for sure.
The Ada High coach said another former Sooner, Laneisha Caulfield, would bring a sack lunch to school every day and shoot free throws during lunch period. Said she kept a chart in her locker of how many she hit each day. It's that kind of work ethic that put her in the record books as OU's free throws leader.
And as for C-Rob, Crystal Robinson, I always enjoy hearing interviews with her, because her Okie accent remains. You can take the girl out of Oklahoma....

PLANO, Texas - University of Texas at San
Antonio women’s basketball seniors Nikki Hendrix
and Dewella Holliday were each named to the all-
Southland Conference (SLC) squads with Hendrix
taking first team honors and Holliday earning a

league office.
Hendrix makes her second straight first-team
appearance and third all-time after helping UTSA
secure fourth place and a first-round home game in
the SLC tournament, as the Roadrunners make
their fourth consecutive postseason appearnace.
The ninth Roadrunner to reach 1,000
career-points, the Ardmore, Okla. native
enters postseason play with 1,071 points
which is ninth all-time at UTSA. Wtih five
double-doubles on the season, a careerbest,
she is also ninth in rebounding with
417 for her career. She currently leads the
league in scoring averaging 17.3 points per
game for the Roadrunners.
Tech play UTSA in the first game of the season in 2003 but Hendrix was suspended for the first five games and DNP in Lubbock due to academic issues. She was in the same recruiting class with Plenette Pierson in 1999. Kristi Washington left Tech the same fall as Hendrix. IIRC, Washington had a similar reason for leaving as Jia Perkins had but I don't remember why Hendrix left.

Now that I'm back at work where I have a computer, I can give my thoughts on the game.
Courtney Paris is an All-American!
Although Kendra hit the game winning shot, it was the attention that Courtney drew all night that allowed the game to come down to the wire the way it did. I have a hard time trying to believe it is best to have a game plan that leaves the point guard open all night so that you can double down on Courtney. But I am not the coach and I respect KMR's decisions. I am so very impressed with Courtney's hands and her footwork. There is nobody in the country that plays a better post game than she does. It is going to be great to see her become a four-time All-American. Wow!
The game was really a battle. There were no lulls in the game at all. Some of our home games have been boring at times, but not this one. Congratulations to all of you OU fans! I had reservations about OU after watching them lose a couple of games on TV earlier in the season. It will be quiet possible for them to sweep the conference unless the wheels come off the schooner. I can't see anybody giving them as tough a game as the Lady Bears did. No offense intended to any of the other teams.

I don't know, zo....for some reason OU plays better on the road than they do at home. Maybe we should cheer for the other team Wednesday...
ok, maybe not: I'm too young to die ;)
I think Baylor misses Emily and her perimeter shooting to pull defenders out. Wabara had a huge task on Courtney Saturday nite. Leah Rush did a great job on Sophia; but I think with Emily and her 3 balls gone, it allows teams to focus and collapse on Sophia. And I STILL want Tisdale; she's quite the gamer. I think that's the kind of PG OU needs.
I love watching Courtney play; after rooting for the undersized bruisers of Phylesha Whaley, Caton Hill, and even Leah Rush in that role: I sure have come to appreciate what Courtney brings to the court. It's even more interesting to see how teams chose to defend her. I kept up with her numbers last year in her senior year of HS (which I typically don't do), and don't think I could drool any more over these two kids; but, what surprised me the first time I saw them play (not practice or scrimmage, but game) was how strong Courtney is. Ashley is still figuring it out and I think in a lot of ways, she is so used to passing into Courtney, so she's had the bigger adaption to DI. But she has some moves around the basket and can be a rebounding vacuum as well.

In an article mostly focus on Moore, I found the following quote fascinating!
"Not long after the game was in the books, Coale was asked if her team was a whole lot better than the one that arrived in Waco the day before. She gave it some thought before answering.
“We might think we are,” she said. “And that might be just as important.”

These girls have come such a long way since the UConn game. We've seen Courtney become more patient when passing out of the double or triple teams. We watched the guards melt down against UConn. Slowly, but surely, they have all stepped up their game to the point where it was a guard's play against Baylor that sealed the deal. I can't wait to watch Sherri's show this week.

You've hit the nail on the head. It's one thing to be as athletically gifted as Courtney, but her patience on the offense is mature beyond her years. Credit all the OU players for getting the offense moving so there is time for patience.

I posted this on another board.
"In his autobiography, Mohammed Ali talks about the Rumble in The Jungle with George Foreman. An aging Ali found himself conftonted with a younger, stronger, and more powerful opponent, and he had to change strategy in the middle of the fight. He made the determination that his only chance of beating Foreman was to take him to a room where Foreman had not been.
Excuse me for paraphrasing, but I don't remember the exact description of the room. But, Ali said that winning easy fights did not prepare you to enter the room where giraffes are blowing bugles, and aligators are blowing saxophones. Until you have been hit hard, you don't know that the room exists, and many can not find their way out of that room the first time they get there. He had to take Foreman to that room.
He waited until Foreman was tired and hit him with everything that he had. Indeed, the vastly superior Foreman entered that room, but he didn't know the way out. He would remain in the room where the giraffes were blowing bugles, and the aligators were blowing saxophones.
Last night, the guys walked into a match with a champion. When they were knocked down, their earlier battles against good teams had prepared them to get back up. Two champions traded blows, toe-to-toe, for the entire game. It would have been a travesty if such a match had become a rout. It had to finish with one or the other of two great teams delivering the knockout punch just before the final bell. Both teams had fought their way out of the room where the giraffes are blowing bugles, and the aligators are playing saxophones.
It was a great game between two great champions.Neither team should feel discouraged about such a game. Now, the guys know that they can enter that room and contend with the best. It is only a matter of getting better, of correcting the mistakes, of gaining yet more confidence. There are eleven games before the conference tournament. It is a time to enjoy the honing of the skills that will permit the guys to compete in that room with the greatest that women's college ball has to offer. The guys have now been there---and won."
An addition. I think Baylor had been to that room. They had won the national title. OU had been entering that room all year against UConn, Ohio State, Michigan State, etc. Gradually, OU had been coming closer to finding out how to survive that room. The Baylor game was the first in which they had found a way out of that room to victory.
Sherri has indicated that it has taken some time for everyone to find their roles in the motion offense. Where would they get open with Courtney under the basket? How could they get open? Then, it came down to having the confidence to shoot. Kendra, for example, has never really overcome the ACL surgery, until now. I wonder if scoring the last eight points against Baylor won't give Kendra the confidence that she has lacked.
Tough game. Tough teams.

The Big 12 has a sportsmanship policy for spectator behavior. The question is, do schools enforce it?
Sportsmanship on the field of play is governed by Conference rules and guidelines, as well as those established under the NCAA and amateur organizations. It is the responsibility of game officials and administrators to see to strict adherence to these guidelines. The behavior of spectators is managed by event personnel, who are encouraged to deal with interference or abuse of appropriate sporting behavior in the strictest of methods.
The Big 12 Conference and its member institutions appreciate the support of the majority of fans who wish to create an atmosphere of competition that allows the participants to showcase the game and their respective skills.

I hadn't heard about the OU fans jumping on Courtney. Where is that thread? I will go after the OU Athletic Department on that one. There are limits that should never be crossed.

It is sad, but this kind of taunting goes on at all schools. I was really surprised when I first encountered it, but some people encourage it and thinks it is funny and a way to get into the opponent's head. I don't like it, but I don't see it stopping.

I agree...having worked at colleges for 20 years and going to lots of game, it seems to be getting worse but I think I'm just getting old. And it's not just the students..but people you would never expect.
I was at a Tech/Texas volleyball game and a couple of young guys near me were taunting a Texas player..they ruder they got, they better she played. I finally leaned down and asked them if they were really Tech fans because their taunting was making her play better. They looked at me and eventually shut up. We were close enough for her to hear me and she gave me a wink and a smile.

Then you'd better start at OU with all those 50+ men yelling stuff at Courtney (mentioned by swok on another thread) first.
I think I misread swok's post...sorry about that.
Tough game. Tough teams.I only shortened your quote because it's already up in your post above, but that's a terrific post, sybarite.
Oklahoma hasn't had a truly inspiring victory since their run through the Big 12 tournament a couple of years ago, and they were too inexperienced as a team to catch that magic in a bottle. Now, two years later those starters and reserves, aided by two remarkably gifted freshmen, are finding their way. Gone are the ghosts of ACL's and of too many close games nearly won but ultimately lost. I really feel high hope for this season, and that's great news, because we really haven't had a whole lot to cheer about recently when referring to this team.
Wins like the gut-check in Waco go a long way toward shaping the destinies of those involved, on both sides of the fence. Everyone will be better in the longer run for having played in it. I still see that very few people nationally think that our conference is anything other than a mediocre one this year, but you have to trust what you see over the opinion of those who spend little time observing what's going on in the lost middle of the country.
I seriously hope that all these great battles we expect to see in conference play this year will translate into unprecendented overall success in the NCAA tournament. It might not happen this year, but its coming soon. And then there won't be people ignoring our terrific conference any more.
This conference is full of lions, getting ready to roar and spring from the cage.
Great game between great teams. But, this kid needs to be suspended from school.
Also, if anyone heard, that was me tonight yelling "Beached Whale", "Put her back in the ocean" and "Moby Dick" tonight at the Paris twins.I have to agree that this doesn't belong here, even in the context of what happened elsewhere.
While I'm quite sure that Courtney's self-image is such that she's not really affected by such things, it will only bring trouble here to re-create inflammatory statements from elsewhere (or create our own, as I've recently been guilty of doing) which only reflect the misdeeds of a tiny minority of people wherever it may happen.
Nobody's fans are all angels or all bad, there's simply too much common ground in the human experience for it to be any other way. I feel a great deal of confidence that time and majority opinion has a tendency to crush that sort of behavior by the overwhelming opinion of the majority.
Now, let's talk Big 12.

I'm new to this board and I love its atmosphere. Its very positive and basically all about the love of WCBB and Big 12. However, I can see Sybarite's motivation. Stuff like that piss me off tremendously, not just because its mean, but because of what that can do the a young Person.
This is a Big 12 board and shouldn't we as Big 12 fans be able to come here and vent on things that go on in the Big 12. Last time I checked, Baylor is Big 12, so this is a Big 12 issue. Are we going to solve anything? Probably not. But venting on an issue, taking a deep breath and moving on, with the support of fellow hoopscoopers, should be allowed or at least tolerated, IMHO.
I have noticed threads that are started based upon what was posted on other boards (most recently the "Stanford crybabies") where nothing was said about cross posting (correct term??).
OK I'm done. :D

Lady Bears' fan that I am, I was disappointed to hear someone proudly tell KMR (during the 1/16 Baylor Hour) that he was nearly ejected from the USA during the Baylor/Texas Tech game. Exactly what he'd been yelling at the referees I don't know. But I was glad to learn that Tech's arena staff do enforce the Big 12's policy on sporting behavior. Baylor should do the same at the Ferrell Center.

Regarding that fan board and fan behavior: I e-mailed Ian McCaw, Baylor's Athletics Director about my concerns. He responded quickly:
Carol Anne,
Thank you for the e-mail. Baylorfans.com is not affiliated with Baylor University as you point out. They are going through a website design that will more prominently display the disclaimer. In addition, the moderator has been more receptive to removing objectional posts. I suggest that you get your information from BaylorBears.com.
Our ushers and security personnel are attentive to inappropriate behavior and take steps to create as positive an environment as possible.
Very best wishes.
Ian
I replied with thanks, and gave him a link to HoopScoop! :D

Ug. Why doesn't our own website have pictures of Abi stripping it from Courtney or at least a decent shot by Baylor to counter this picture? ;)
Well, I had to venture to ESPN, but I found the photo I was looking for!

In theory, we all do. However, unless someone complains to the arena staff, jerks are going to get away with these kinds of comments. I've heard some pretty ugly stuff yelled at Texas players. I've complained to ushers a few times and a couple of times I've seen Marsha glaring up in the season ticket area after things had been shouted a couple of times...I don't know if she sends someone up to talk to them or if they just shut up on their own, but it seems to work.
But the schools can not be expected to police the discussion boards..that ain't their job. But the boards can take care of and delete and ban those kinds of posters. I will say...I've heard and seen much worse.
We all have those jerks...as swok mentioned for OU, they come out of the wooodwork for the Texas game.

Just found this article in the Ruston Daily Leader, regarding Leon Barmore's attending the Oklahoma game January 21 and embracing Kim. They have that same upside-down, "I'm not gonna cry" sort of "smile" don't they? :( http://www.rustonleader.com/sports.php?id=834

"After hearing of personal challenges being faced by former Lady Techsters’ backcourt star and assistant coach Kim Mulkey-Robertson,"
The above from the article referenced by Scamp - and another poster said something about "personal problems" earlier here. Does anyone have more info? Certainly for someone like KMR, serious problems with somone she loves could affect how she reacts to many things.
