I know we still have some time before the tournament, but does anyone have any suggestions about getting together again? Hopefully we can get Mechelle and Brenda to spend some time with us.
There are a lot of places in the West End Market Place to meet and greet. I think we have found that trying to have a meal is a tough thing to pull off. But desserts...thats what I like. :)
Please put on your thinking caps and post your suggestions. It ought to be a great tournament.

We might think about going back to the restaurant in the Reunion Towers that we were at the first year in Dallas and I do agree about the food thing.
They have plenty of room and it's pretty deserted around 2 or 3 on that Thursday.
I think this is the one:
Centennial Cafe
Located in the heart of the atrium at Hyatt Regency Dallas, Centennial Cafe features Southwestern cuisine and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. From the Hyatt signature breakfast menu to the tempting ice cream and cheesecake combinations offered from the Scoops menu, it's all delicious at Centennial Cafe!
Hours: 6:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.
Reservations: 214 712 7148
Seems by Thursday and the men's teams coming into town, the West End can get more crowded.

Yes, that was the place. I think it would be fine. It was deserted when we were there in '03 - I think we were the only ones in the place.

Y'all got to promise to save me a seat...really enjoyed getting to sit in for a few moments before our game last year and hope to get to spend even more time visiting with y'all this year. Thanks again to everyone for posting their thoughts on all the games again this year. This really is a great site to read INTELLIGENT discussions about Big 12 Basketball. As always, if you can, come down to press row and say hello to us when we're on the road.
Looking forward to seeing everyone in Dallas.

How about a tailgate? :)

How about a tailgate? :)
We park in the handicapped lot just across the street from the East doors - the handicapped section is only about 5 rows deep which mean it is CLOSE to the building. We usually see tailgates there at least once - only a couple of problems if you would like to consider this: I haven't got enough room to bring enough chairs (we tow my Jeep Wrangler behind the motor home but I come to games in the Jeep - not the MH - grin). I sure could bring munchies and drinks and attendees could put a buck in a jar to defray the cost of that. 2nd problem: a fall back site if the weather doesn't cooperate. Just a thought.
Really liked the place we met last time in Dallas too.
JohnHenry
01-18-2006, 09:35 AM
I like a tailgate too, but it would be a roll of the dice on the weather. But March is usually pretty favorable. What we need is a 'Hoopscoop HQ' in a close parking lot, with a small tent, chairs, coolers, and satellite TV - a place to hang out between games and talk shop and munch on BBQ sandwiches and stuff. Even better if we can pick up a wireless signal out there...let's bring a video camera and do our own pre-games and wrap-ups out there! Invite Brenda and Mechelle by for some chalk talk, etc.... Chipper can be Trev Alberts and i'll be Lou Holtz... :D
The Hyatt place was pretty cool, food was good, the bar  was close by, and it was right across the street from the arena. I think a lot of the Big 12 folks and press stay there as well (it's already booked for the week).
This year I plan to be there on Wednesday too, God willing (may be the only chance to see my team play  ), so i'll be getting a hotel room in the area. Having a HQ would be fun, but it might 'legitimize' us more than we'd like, though.... ;)
Bob_Ballew
01-18-2006, 12:45 PM
The Hyatt is close to the arena and has very good accommodations. It gets my vote. Everyone could do their own thing in the way of food, desserts, drinks, etc... There is plenty of room for a good crowd. I like the tailgate idea also, but I'm not sure what the weather may be like. Most folks would probably prefer the seating at the Hyatt.

I'm hopeful I can make it this year (since I do live here and all). That is the week of my spring break and I'm pretty sure I'll be in town--doing final things to get my house ready to put on the market. I can squeeze basketball in between that!

I live in a suburb of Dallas, but this whole thing comes just after a surgery that will leave me in a wheelchair for about two months. I'm not going to try to negotiate American Airlines or Reunion arenas in a wheelchair.

I'm not sure who has or has not made hotel reservations for Dallas just yet, but we were told today that it is now virtually impossible to get a hotel anywhere near the arena. Apparently there is a Ace Hardware worldwide convention in town and they booked their rooms two years ago. Looks like the Big 12 folks didn't do all their research. The Baylor team barely got rooms at the Adams Mark which is completely on the other side of downtown.
I assume there's no problem getting rooms elsewhere in Dallas, but expect to have to drive in or take the light rail. Hopefully those who are going to Dallas already have their rooms locked up.
swok34
01-28-2006, 07:36 PM
I made reservations some time ago, but I don't ever stay right downtown, but along the Central Expressway. Learned from the get go that you can stay out a ways, park free (usually) and take the Dart downtown. I believe you can stay as far out as Plano, if staying along the Central Expressway.
no traffic
no $10 parking per day fee
no getting lost
no headache :D
I hope the other teams have their reservations taken care of. I noticed that the hotel right near the arena has been booked for months.
Now, if you stay in the Market Center area, you will need a vehicle. I think there are plans to expand the DART, but as far as I know, it's not available.
spooky
01-28-2006, 08:53 PM
The DART plan is a good one. I usually don't bother with a hotel when it's in Dallas - just drive back and forth. But last time, I drove right past Reunion, up to the Mockingbird Station, and took the rail into downtown. It's only a couple of bucks for an all-day pass and you do avoid all the parking hassles.

Here's a link to the light rail system in the Dallas area. It will show you routes, stops, parking lots, schedules, etc. Note that parking areas are not at all stops.
http://www.dart.org/
The most northern stop along the Dart line is the Parker Rd station in Plano. It has a very big parking area. There are several hotels/motels in Plano along US 75 especially between the George Bush (190) and extending up to Spring Creek Parkway (just north of Parker Rd.) Several especially around the Park Blvd and Parker Rd area.
There are also several hotels/motels around the Campbell Rd area in Richardson. There's a DART station in that area, Galatyn, but it has no parking adjacent to it. You could park either at the Arapaho Station or under the Bush.
Further south, back inside the 635 loop in Dallas, there are a few hotels/motels around Meadow Rd and Royal Ln (La Quinta, Courtyard, Residence Inn, Holiday Inn). There's a DART station just east of US 75 at Walnut Hill (it's by Presbyterian Hospital) but no parking there. And there is a big parking area just a bit south at the Park Ln. stop in Dallas. I think that parking area usually fills up pretty quickly with daily commuters. The stop by Presbyterian Hospital is technically within walking distance of locations along US75, though be aware that the station is about 2 blocks east of US 75 and most of the rooms are on the west side of the expressway (Holiday Inn is on the east side). So it would be a little jaunt. Plus, sometimes I might not be comfortable walking a distance in the area, especially at night, as it seems to be increasing with crime. Or if you don't mind paying to park, you could use the lots at the hospital.
UPDATE - There's also a Dart station at Forest Lane, on the east side of US75 and just north of Royal Ln. It does offer parking, though the parking area is not the biggest.
There's also another line that generally runs northeast from downtown, to Garland. It's either referred to as the Garland or NE line. It would also be a possibility, for there is lodging available along 635, east of US75. And there is a Dart station at the 635/Skillman St. area, with parking. I think the station is actually just north of 635, between Skillman and Miller Rd. Further north on that line, the next stop is at Forest Lane and Jupiter Rd. I believe that station also has parking available.
Swok is right. There is currently no rail line that runs north along I35 in what's known as the Market Center area.

This is the area I'm staying in, and the Holiday Inn is incredibly reasonable; I also thought about staying out in Richardson. I think this is about 8 miles from the arena, but the DART is wonderful..park for free and spend $2.50 to ride as much as you want.

We are staying at the Holiday Inn Select, Love Field on Saturday night. They still had rooms last week. The hotel is about 4 miles from downtown.
I will be staying in Allen on Tuesday and Wednesday and taking the light rail from Parker Station. They have plenty of parking - but it fills up fast with regular commuters. It is well-lighted and has security.

I had asked Sherri's secretary about how teams book their hotel rooms and she told me that the Big XII actually holds the room for teams to put their request in....
OU is also staying at the Adams Mark, but she also mentioned that the AM is not a hotel that the Big XII booked down.

I saw her last year in Kansas City, but not sure if she's maybe scouting for someone....According to the WNBA site with today's date: Lin Dunn College - Tennessee-Martin '69 Former Purdue University and Seattle Storm head coach Lin Dunn begins her second season as an assistant coach with the Indiana Fever. Dunn, who last coached with the Storm for three seasons from 2000-02, was hired by Fever coach Brian Winters after serving in a scouting capacity with the Fever in 2003. Btw I would bet that we can get an email to Linn Dunn. I would not be surprised if she would enjoy meeting with the Hoopscoopers and finding out what has become of our little band of Big 12 WCBB nuts. We have to keep in mind that it is likely she will be at the B-12 tourney but she will also be working and it may not fit in to her schedule but I'd bet she would get a kick out of it and she could give us insight into what the scouts are looking for.

"Dear Big 12 Coaches,
In the event your team isn't required to play Thursday afternoon during the conference tournament in Dallas, please allow us to invite you to our annual conference. Who are we?
We're a dedicated group of women's basketball fans who thirst for knowledge of our favorite teams, the Big 12.
There will be camaraderie, snacks, and a lot of love for any of you who attend. Be aware that we will also be very desirous of any information you wish to impart to us, and while we are a collegial group, we're also serious about basketball. So expect us to want to talk about the teams, the players, the record, the tournament, athletic and academic progress -- and not about favorite perfumes, pin-up boys, or the like. ;) "

3 comments: 1) eliminate the verbiage about playing on Thursday - really doesn't add anything and you never know ...... 2) we should be up front about the fact that we all pick up our own tab - or arrange a "fund" to cover the tab of any of the staff which show up? Wow - I don't volunteer for THAT task - grin. 3) maybe add a hint that the group able to come to a tournament and thus attend the get together is relatively small, usually about 25?
I particularly LOVE this paragraph:
"We are also well aware that our conference is blessed with 12 of the best coaching staffs in college basketball, and while we are devoted to our respective schools, we have tremendous respect for all of you and appreciate the job you've all done, both for the game and for the young players in your charge. We hope to have the opportunity to thank you for your dedication and tireless work - which is, after all, what brings us together as fans. "

2) we should be up front about the fact that we all pick up our own tab - or arrange a "fund" to cover the tab of any of the staff which show up? Wow - I don't volunteer for THAT task - grin. I know there are a number of restrictions on what booster members are able to do for players. Does anyone "in the know" know if some of those rules apply to coaches as well? If not, I would be more than willing to pick up at least one coaches tab, if only to hopefully increase the likelihood of one attending.

I just didn't want there to be an uncomfortable moment when it came time to take care of the tabs. (Don't think there are restrictions - coaches get "loaner" cars, etc. etc., don't they?)
JH: I'm bad at estimating crowds - I still don't believe there more than 11,000 at yesterday's OU/A&M game :) I just didn't want the coaches/staffs to think that this was a "huge" crowd. Less than 50? No really important - just like to control expectations when possible - but that's me.

I'd venture to guess we had 35-40 the last time we were in Dallas (at least).
Aren't we pretty much just planning for dessert and drinks? Though I have no problem contributing/paying for meals for our distinguished guest.
I'd suggest we put a bucket by the door and all the hoopscoopers toss in a few bucks to cover the costs of our "guests". We can always give any leftover money to the Commish.
I'm pretty sure coaches aren't under the same restrictions as recruits.

Great idea, swok. I will gladly contribute if I am able to make the gathering. I am scheduled to work in Dallas that week (hmm...just a happy coincidence, I guess) and probably can't leave work before 4 o'clock. Especially if Texas has afternoon games on Tuesday and Wednesday (as seems likely at this point). So to summarize for myself and others, we are meeting at 2 pm on Thursday at the Hyatt Regency (next door to the Reunion Arena), on the 2nd floor (mezzanine level) at the Centennial Cafe ? Did I get all that correct?

I have talked with the restaurant manager and he is setting up an area in the cafe for us to meet. 2:00 p.m. is the correct time. It looks like Brenda and Mechelle will both be able to visit with us once again. Hopefully a coach will come by.
We really need a head count. Please reply to this post if you are going to be able to attend. Thanks, Zo

OK ... I've never posted on the list, so I'm hoping I'm doing this right.
Thanks for inviting me to join your party on Thursday. I'm sorry I was only able to be there a short time ... I was at the shoot-arounds all day, and had to rush off to be on a conference call at 3:00pm. It was fun to see everyone again ... sorry I couldn't stay around to meet everyone individually.
Thanks for being such loyal fans of Big 12 women's basketball!

BV on TV aka "Foxy Lady" :D :D One can't argue with that!!! All girls who grow up in Nebraska usually turnout to be "Foxy Ladies" ;) such as yourself!
I've moped around all week thinking of Dallas and with you posting I'll probably mope for another couple of months wishing I could of been there. :( :(
Your accomplishments have made us very proud here in Nebraska and we Thank You for all you do for women's basketball and the Big 12 conference and wish you nothing but continued success with what you do.
I have hopes that someone took pictures and will link them somewhere for those of us who weren't fortunate enough to have been there, so we can somewhat have a sense of what we missed? :)

Doing this right?
We would have even let you have your own thread :) and wouldn't even have allowed anyone to hijack it.
I appreciate everything that you do for the Big XII and for taking the 15 minutes that you had out of your busy schedule to meet with us on Thursday.
And I certainly appeciate the job you do on the color..I've learned a lot of information and understood the game better because of the job that you do.
Thank you!!!!
BVonTV, there is only one thing I would change. I would like BVonTVmore!
Thanks for all you do and your never wavering professionalism.
I wish I could have been in Dallas to see you there again.
GO BV!!

Thanks from me as well Brenda! You truly do a wonderful job whether in front of the camera or talking to the group on Thursday.
Thanks also to Mechelle for all you do. It amazes me that along with finding so many great fans here in HoopScoop, and having such great players and coaches to root for in this league, we also have equally wonderful media members that follow the Big 12 closely and are willing to interact with fans. Couldn't ask for anything more!
Can't wait till next year - when we finally get to treat everyone to some Okie Hospitality.

Getting to meet several more HoopScoopers made the week great fun. Some of you are too wild! :p
I have to say that I really enjoyed the gathering on Thursday, even if the folks at the Hyatt were scatter-brained.
It was good to hear from Brenda and Mechelle again. I hope we can run into them again during the NCAA Tournament. It is fun to ask specific questions and get their take on the world of women's basketball. I really like Mechelle's picks for the Final Four!
