View Full Version : I need your help
For those who complain that my computer rankings are messed up, here's your chance to help.
I'm hoping to tweak my computer rankings tonight/this weekend in time to come out with my own projected seedings after Saturday's games. Right now, Texas is horribly underrated at #31, which was the last straw.
Anyway, I need you to put the following games in order, from best to worst. For example, you have to determine if that 30-point win over the #25 team is as good as a 10-point win over a #10 team or a 3-point win over the #2 team.
Rank the following from 1 to 12, 1 being best.
(margin of victory or loss, rank of opponent, location)
Wins:
1: 30, #25, away
2: 16, #5, home
3: 14, #15, away
4: 10, #10, home
5: 19, #129, neutral
6: 2, #10, neutral
7: 3, #2, away
Losses:
8: 20, #5, away
9: OT, #15, home
10: 4, #11, home
11: OT, #31, away
12: 12, #5, home
Wins:
1: 3, #2, away
2: 16, #5, home
3: 10, #10, home
4: 2, #10, neutral
5: 14, #15, away
6: 30, #25, away
7: 19, #129, neutral
Losses:
8: 12, #5, home
9: 20, #5, away
10: 4, #11, home
11: OT, #15, home
12: OT, #31, away
Feel free to mix up wins and losses. Some losses may be better than some wins.

mred,
but doesn't the good/bad depend on who you are?
From what perspective should they be ranked?
For instance, a 20 point loss to the #5 team away might be bad if you are the #3 team, but if you're the #25 team it's probably expected, generally speaking.
Or a 30 pt win over #25 away is great if you are unranked or even in the 20's, but if you're #5 it's still good, but again, expected.
Assume the same team played all of these games.
First of all, let me express my appreciation for your being such a big fan of the game that you take the time to do this stuff. Secondly, congrads on the big win versus CU last night. I like Coach Fenelly, his strategies, and the fact that he is a classy guy who has turned ISU into a classy program.
Now for my suggestion: As I have stated in other postings, I really feel strongly that there should be some type of extra emphasis on teams you play in your non-conference schedule. These are teams that you CHOOSE to have on your schedule, and a team should thus be rewarded for having a tough non-conference schedule. If nothing else, the one thing I love about Pat Summit is that she pretty much takes on everyone who even THINKS they have a team and who want to play her Lady Vols. If I were a coach, and thought I had the best team, I'm pretty sure I'd be the same way - - wouldn't want there to be any doubt about who can beat who.
I would have liked to seen Baylor play some of those top teams this year in their non-conference schedule. I say this because, personally, I think they can beat almost anybody in the nation and would like to see them get their just regards. I'd like to see Lambert and Crockrum terrorize teams like La Tech, Tennessee, Stanford, Vandy, Purdue, Duke and others. On the flip side, maybe it will be to their advantage in that perhaps they may be overlooked/underestimated by some of these teams should they face them in the NCAA Tourney.
Anyway, good luck with your formulas and keep giving us the results. I don't always agree with them but enjoy reading them just the same.

Hmmm....tough task, especially distinguishing the losses. I guess something like:
7: 3, #2, away
2: 16, #5, home
4: 10, #10, home
3: 14, #15, away
6: 2, #10, neutral
1: 30, #25, away
10: 4, #11, home (loss)
9: OT, #15, home (loss)
12: 12, #5, home (loss)
5: 19, #129, neutral
8: 20, #5, away (loss)
11: OT, #31, away (loss)
