Adrian McGowen, a senior at Goodrich [TX] High School who signed to play basketball at Texas A&M recently, needs six points to break the national high school girl’s basketball scoring record.

The state’s all-time leading scorer is likely to set a new mark against Chireno on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on her home court. McGowen entered the season with 4,202 points to her credit.

In her first eight games this season, McGowen has 299 points with posted totals of 63, 24, 32, 48, 45, 36, 23 and 28 points. McGowen is averaging 37 points a game this season. She now has 4,501 career points.

The all-time national record of 4,506 is held by Missy Thomas of Gibsland-Coleman (La.) from 1992-95.

McGowen, a 5-10 guard, is the state Preseason Class A Player of the Year.

McGowen averaged a state-best 53 points a game last season.

Goodness! Makes me wonder what sort of defenses she must be seeing by now. I can't imagine she gets much one-on-one man.

Are you telling me that none of those three-on-three forwards scored more?

She broke the record last night, scoring 41 points in a 55-49 victory over Chireno.

BTW, swok, apparently the opponents still haven't figured out a good defense against her . . . she had all but 14 of her team's points? Even with a triple team, looks like it's be hard to get that many points.

I'll bet you a nickel that the 3-on-3 records aren't integrated into the five-on-five stats! (Just like the AIAW is ignored by the NCAA.)

The very best 6-on-6 players scored around 60 points per game. Lynne Lorenzen, who played at ISU after graduating from high school in 1987, scored 6,736 points, the national all-time prep record.

They mentioned her on Sportscenter's Top 10 Plays. I think she was #8.
