"Wednesday’s expansion draft for the newest WNBA team, the Chicago Sky, will have a definite impact on some former Big 12 players.

Two past league standouts, Stacey Dales-Schuman (Oklahoma) and Jia Perkins (Texas Tech), were among the 13 players chosen by Chicago in the draft. And the player that Connecticut lost to Chicago, Brooke Wyckoff, leaves the role of versatile sparkplug for former Kansas State player Megan Mahoney to potentially claim with the Sun."

The article does bring up a good point, in that with the departure of Brooke Wyckoff, Megan Mahoney has the opportunity to fill Brooke's role as "Miss Play Anywhere and Do What It Takes."

What it doesn't address is what is likely to happen to Jamie Carey and Jen Derevjanik. When you consider that the player that the Sun elected to protect instead of Wyckoff was Australian point guard Erin Phillips, it makes you wonder where those two fit into the Sun long term plan. Before this happened, I would have thought that Jamie had a good shot at remaining with the Sun as Lindsay Whalen's backup. Now I'm not so sure. Four PGs on an 11 player roster hardly makes sense, especially with Megan Mahoney around to "Do What It Takes." :D

Another "what if" consideration to ponder: If Stacy had not made the decision to return to the WNBA, it very likely could have been Laurie Koehn drafted from Washington. Just a thought.

Here's a pretty good rundown by Clay Kallam on each of the players http://fullcourt.scout.com/2/467336.html Dales-Schuman brightens the Sky. It was interesting to me too that Sacramento kept Haynie over Newton.

A final thought: At least in the minds of the ones doing the drafting for the Sky, they picked 13 players who were the 7th best on their respective teams. They will draft 6th in each round of the college draft, and will also be able to sign free agents. Then they will be able to keep only 11 players on their active roster. Doesn't this mean that several pretty good players who were reasonably secure on their old squad will be cut loose when it is all said and done?

Well, they'll still keep a total of 13 with two on the injured list, right? And I would imagine that a couple of those who do get cut will get picked back up somewhere since they're all pretty decent players. The #6 pick in the draft will very probably stick, but the second-rounder probably won't, I'd guess.

And I agree about Jamie and Jen, they're definitely at risk. One probably has to go. It's kind of close call, since Jen is far better on defense but Jamie is the one who can score. Might depend on how Phillips shapes up in camp--where is she weakest?
