A familiar face on the Houston Jaguars squad playing UT

BROWN,DIONNE

Also LaToya Thomas, Umeki Webb, Nekeshia Henderson, and a couple others who names are familiar.

Early scores
BU 21 HJ 10

UT 8 HJ 14 (I think UT got HJ's tougher squad...several current & former WNBA players)

Baylor up 63-25 at the half. Tizzie (Tisdale) has had a great half, with 12 points and several assists. Those freshmen are looking good as well. They sure aren't timid about moving the ball around, banging for the board or putting the shot up.

Oh my gosh! Latoya, please don't kill yourself before the season starts! She was chasing a ball out-of-bounds and got a double forearm shove that sent her tumbling over the Jaguars bench and into the seats behind. But Latoya is a gamer and tough as nails--she just popped back up and ran back onto the court.

I liked the way the players, especially the freshmen seem to be looking out for each other's backs...

It's pretty ugly for the Houston Jaguars in Waco.

With 6:25 to go, BU 100 HJ 44

Baylor wins 122 - 53. The bigger picture . . . the freshmen played well! Overall there were 3 double doubles, and 7 players scored in double figures. Let's bring on Sunday!

Sightings

HoopScoop's own Bear Skin! Yep, he was highlighted on BaylorVision during the TO at just under 12 to go in the second half. You're looking good, Bear Skin!

Also, I think that was Chelsea W highlighted on BV at just after the start of the 2nd half. ChiBears, if you were watching, your take? Whoever, she stood up and took a bow. :)

It was definitely Chelsea. She was looking fit and happy. Glad she is supporting this team with her presence! Didn't she graduate, though? Anyone know what she's up to these days?

Thanks, CB! I don't really know what Chelsea's doing these days, but I did note that Rick and Lori (broadcast team) mentioned she had worked with Tizzie over the summer and taken her into her wings. So maybe she's still around Waco.

I know the competition wasn't tough tonight, but the freshmen were impressive in several categories.

1) aggressiveness--sometimes freshmen can really be timid at the beginning and these women are taking it to the hole with authority, challenging shooters on defense, and working their tails off on rebounds (though they're still working on getting position consistently)

2) transition defense--regardless of the competition, they are still having to rebound, make a quick outlet and spread the floor. They are consistently filling the lanes properly and so far, have made the right decision on the pass most of the time. It remains to be seen if they can do that against stiffer competition

3) they are passing with authority. Not always the right decision, but the passes zip in there. I know that was something KMR stressed in the very first practice.

And this group is greased lightning fast!

1) Angela is looking like a polished, experienced player already. By the time conference rolls around, barring injury, she should be running this offense to perfection. Tisdale also looked good on defense. Did she not take a heck of a charge? That took guts!

2) Chameka needs to have a good night like tonight every night, even though the competition will be tougher. If she can shoot with confidence AND consistency, she along with Jordan, Tizzy and Morrow will knock down those threes more than well enough to calm all those fearful that Emily's departure is going to seriously damage us...

3) Abby still needs to develop her under the basket shot. She sometimes seems to get in a groove of shooting OVER the basket. The side of the square, Abby, the side of the square...

4) That's the least amount of animation and overt coaching I have ever seen from Kim. She looked big-time bored!

Well, Lady Bears, the easy stuff is in the books. Get your armor on and strap the chinstraps tightly. Georgia is really going to test you, but if you pull off a win against Georgia, people are going to be a little more hesitant to doubt you this year.

The Bulldogs have the best backcourt in basketball, according to some "experts," and Tasha Humphrey is a beast. I think, though, this game may come down to who can keep their bigs out on the court. Fatigue and fouls (the first contributing to the last especially) will make the difference, in my "for what it's worth" opinion...

I lost the Texas gametracker so don't know exactly what happened, but Texas lost to the Houston Jags 77-73

Arriaran, Boyd, and Cook all had nice games

The good news is that this year's game against the Jaguars was much more decisive than last year's, but the Jags definitely are not as good a team this year. I do think their better squad is further south, and I noticed the LaCharlotte Smith, who has been one of their better players, is an assistant coach with them now.

What can you say about Tizzie. 20 pts, 14 assists, and no turnovers in two games. And even though the competition wasn't the best, games like this are often turnover fests because of all the fast breaks. Angela didn't play tentatively at all - she was running at every opportunity and still was perfect with her ball control. The other performance that stood out to me was Rachel Allison. She's not a polished offensive threat yet, but she'll get a hand on darn near every loose ball or rebound. She had 9 offensive boards on the night, and darn near had 4-5 others. She could be a real defensive thorn to many a inside player this year.

Dang, I'm ready to leave for Lubbock tonight!!. Here's to a 2-0 weeekend vs. the SEC!!

BTW, I wondered if two of the girls they showed when they were giving shots of "VIP's" in the crowd were two of our new recruits. They looked a little like Wilson and Oberg. They were sitting by themselves at what looked like either the scorer's table or the media tables.

It is a weekday during school, though, and New York isn't a quick car trip over...

I know what you mean. She was out of her chair for 2-3 minutes at the most for the whole game. Maybe she was embarrassed because she, Bill and Johnny had on matching outfits ;) Don't they know only one coach gets to be noticed for their fashion.

great recap, ChiBears! The ladies do seem to be confident! We'll see what Sunday holds.

I remember a few years back when Abi was a true freshman. I had gone down for a Tip-Off Club luncheon in early November and stayed around for practice that afternoon. While I was sitting on the sidelines watching all the activities, Abi came walking in, assisted by crutches. She'd had surgery to repair her knee, again. Anyhow, she sat down not far from where I was. I remembered hearing about her and the fact that she was from Italy. But I couldn't help but be somewhat struck by the fact that she was so lean. I went down and talked with her just a little. She was oh so polite . . .

Well, just a couple of years later, I couldn't believe how much she had transformed herself! After all the rehab sessions and hitting the weight room, Abi no longer looked weak. That's the Abi that I see out on the court today, and I do believe I see even more of a presence early in this year over last!

She's such a well spoken young woman and student of the game. I can't help but want the very best for her! :)

Texas lost 73 to 77.

Neither Tiffany nor Nina played.

I don't know why Nina Norman didn't play. She was there and warmed up with the team.

Tiffany Jackson was in street clothes with a boot on her foot and crutches under her chair :(

Altogether, there are too many knee braces out there. Mergerson was sitting on the bench in her warm-up pants - apparently she hasn't been cleared to play. Earnesia Williams was wearing a black brace (?) on one leg and some kind of white support wrap on her other leg. Coco Reed was wearing a brace on one leg. Did I miss anyone? Oh, yeah, Aubry Cook is still wearing some kind of wrap on her leg and appears to be allowed limited court time (otherwise, I have to think she would have played more than 13 minutes tonight.) If able to play, Aubry Cook can help the Longhorns inside.

I almost have to think of Abby as a "split" person, one--the chiseled "enforcer" who was ready to go toe-to-toe with McCarville last year, and one--the scholarly woman who speaks multiple languages and wants to be a doctor.

Now, intellectually, I know those two aren't mutually exclusive, but it's hard to imagine the "Language of Love" (actually, I think maybe French is one of the languages she wants to learn...) coming from the Abby that had to be restrained by Sophia and Chemeka in the Sweet 16 last year! ...

Whatever, I'm sure glad she's on our team!

Well, going to go back and head to the airport. Have a 10:30 flight out to Lubbock. Going to visit with relatives for a couple of days before heading over to the Tip-off. Internet connection is "iffy" where I'll be and not sure I can tie up phone lines much, but sure hope I can check in and read this board. I might have "HoopScoop" withdrawal if I can't!

The Houston Jags that played Texas sounded like an excellent team and it may be the case of going for the best work from the players instead of the win. Sorry to hear about TJ and NN not playing....aggravated old injuries?
Hopefully nothing severe!
