After looking at Nancy Lieberman's seeding projection. I decided to do a little indepth research. As of right now, I have 10 DEFINITE locks to host:
Connecticut, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Duke, Purdue, Vanderbilt, Stanford, South Carolina, Baylor and Louisiana Tech.
I've come up with a list of 13 other schools that have legitimate arguments to be awarded a host site.
Big XII: Colorado, Kansas State, Texas, Iowa State and Texas Tech
The others: Florida International, Minnesota, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Notre Dame, Texas Christian, Colorado State, Boston College, and Cincinnati.
Of the Big XII, I honestly believe that at most 3 of the 5 will get a host site, giving us a total of 5 (including OU and Baylor). Any of the 5 that lose in either the 1st round or the quaterfinals will be in serious jeopardy. If Colorado, K State or Texas advance to the semis, they'll host. ISU and Tech have to go all the way to the finals, and may still need to win the whole thing to have a shot.
Of the remaining teams, I think Florida International, Minnesota, Old Dominion and Colorado State are the best shots. Some of you may laugh at Florida International (23-5, 13-1), but they have a strong RPI (14th) and played a top 50 schedule. Texas Christian may also have an argument with a 22nd RPI, but their Stength of Scheudule is at 72, so look for them as either a 6 or 7 seed.
North Carolina, Notre Dame, Boston College and Cincinnati need a lot of help. All have legit reasons, but just aren't at the level needed to be a strong candidate. If any of the other strong candidates falter, one of these schools could slip in with conference tourney win.
I think the NCAA may give a really close look to the schools from the smaller conferences. With the Big XII possibly getting 5 host sites, they may want to spread the wealth around to schools that may not have had a shot to host in years past. This idea favors Colorado State, Texas Christian, and Florida International.
I'll try to have a more complete breakdown of the contenders later in the day. BTW, Florida would have had a shot, had they not lost in the first round of the SEC tourney yesterday. Those first/quarter losses can be killers!
