Big 12 All-Conference Honors (http://www2.big12sports.com/new/wbball/news/?id=912) as voted on by the coaches.
You really have to wonder about the coaches. These must be voted on by the SIDs I guess because the coaches should realize some changes over last season. They basically voted exactly as the did last season - the article points this out. Anyhow, here's the list of honors:

And from the what were they thinking department....
Gahan - 3rd team? That's ludicrous. Please tell me the coaches didn't vote on these. They either put no thought into them or were smoking something at the time.
And from the "duh" department.....Schreiber gets Freshman of the Year and then she is put on the Honorable mention list BEHIND Wecker and Koehn. So which is it coaches??? Is Schreiber the FOY or is it really one of Wecker and Koehn.
Ugh....these awards always annoy me to no end. They never make any sense. Thank goodness Chipper allowed us to vote on these in his thread. If he doesn't compile the a list of consensus picks, I will and I'm sure we'll come up with a much more logical list of honors!

I really have to take issue with Dales being named player of the year. IMO it should go to either Welle or Lambert. And after Wednesday night, my heart says Welle, but my head says Lambert.

I would have given POY to Sheila Lambert, not to take a thing away from Stacey Dales, but Sheila is Baylor.
Not to say that Stacey is not Oklahoma, but with her supporting cast stepping up and the way they've stepped up, Stacey's stats and her role on the team is a bit different this year......
and that coming from a OU homer fan http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
congrats to all the winners, and look at "old lady" Ohlde, a sophomore amongst seniors for 1st team.

Wow, I noticed the same thing about Schreiber vs. Koehn and Wecker. With all due respect to Schreiber, I don't see how she got the nod over Koehn and Wecker. I think most of us voted for Wecker--she's more of a complete package IMHO.
Ditto for Gahan. That's ridiculous. Talk about underrated.
POY had to be a tough call this year, but I'm not complaining.
Dales brings so much to the table other than points, that if you haven't seen her play alot you just might not be able to see.
DOesn't the media select a team as well? For what that's worth...
Well, I wouldn't want to be the one who had to pick the all-conference team this year. There are just SO many good players in the Big XII!!! I think there could be a valid argument made regardless of who was placed on first, second, third, or honorable mention. I do agree that there seems to be a lack of logic in some of the selections. The only thing I really argue with is Dales as POY. As deserving as Stacy is of this award, Lambert is even more deserving. Not to take anything away from Dales, because I think she's a super player! That's just my opinion. Well, I guess we know what fans in the SEC have been feeling for years, right? I guess that's not such a bad thing.

As much as I enjoy Schreiber, I too am shocked that she is FOY. I think she should have been third team and one of the KSU players receive the overall honor. I also think Kala Bowers performance at Tennessee should have gotten her an honorable mention, despite her ups and downs.
I also think if Stacy Stephens were a Junior or a Sophmore she would have been first team. She's not the flashiest, but she is so solid and even if she doesn't score, she changes the whole game when she is on the floor. But Welle is a Senior so ...
maybe that was the logic in many coaches minds for rewarding this good young team??? KSU got a first teamer, so perhaps this negated them from getting FOY? Just a thought.

... and a few more thoughts. It seems that POY always has to come from the championship team. Stacy Dales is great, but Lambert was the POY, we all seem to agree on that in Chipper's thread.

Wecker shot 52%, averaged 8 boards and about 16 pts per game. She also had 47 blocks!
If she improves on those numbers next year, she'll jump right up to 1st team.
I am among those who believe she's the best freshman in the country!

I disagree. SHe's had a few good performances, but until she gets some consistancy (and learns to play defense), I don't think she's deserves mention.

You mean to say if she were a Jr or Sr?
Welle led the country in FG%, and came close to averaging a double/double I believe. I can't recall that she ever had an off game, or if she did it certainly didn't happen against teams they lost to. ie, she performed when it counted most.
Don't see how you could attribute Welle making 1st team being attributed to her being a Sr.
I still think Gahan got robbed!

Stevens was right there with Welle and she was after all the only player to be named POW twice. Welle just isn't as multidimensional as Stevens. And I think Welle had a much better year last year.

[This message has been edited by schooner (edited 03-01-2002).] I have read all the posts and agree/disagree on some of the same. Lambert deserved POY, not taking anything away from Dales. She is an awesome player and was most deserving of the award. Let's go back several weeks...........I stated that Schreiber deserved FOY, but I DO NOT understand her "Honorable Mention" behind KSU's dynamite Freshman package. This is ludicrous!!! IMO Schreiber was deserving because she was an immediate impact player that UT did not have last year. I am also not sure why Stephens did not make 1st team over Welle. I believe Stephens to have been more consistent over the long haul. Lastly, I believe Coale or Mulkey should have been tabbed COY, over Patterson. KSU showed signs of inconsistency down the stretch and were blown away by Colorado. I realize one game does not make a season, but I just believe the other two coaches were more deserving. Now on to the Big 12 Tourney and let's go get 'em Horns. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL LADIES THAT WERE HONORED AND EVEN TO THOSE THAT WERE NOT FOR MAKING THE BIG 12 WHAT IT IS!! A BIGGER CONGRATULATIONS TO SCHREIBER!!!!!!!!!!

Wecker plays the 4 which means she gets more shots close to the basket. Didn't we say in the hoopla posts that centers and power forwards should have higher shooting percentages?
Schreiber also has a pretty complete stat line including 14.8 points and 6.1 rebounds a game. She had 37 steals (more than Koehn or Wecker - Dionnah Jackson had a scary 48). Schreiber, playing the 3, shot a very respectable .458 from the field, .413 from 3-point range, and .845 from the free throw line (and she got to the line 97 times, more than any other freshman). When you go to the line, you've increased another team's fouls at the same time you've earned a chance to add to your team's point total. Many conference coaches referred to Schreiber as being 'the difference' between last year's Texas team and this year's team.

As always, there is going to be controversy with awards. I think Deb Patterson deserved coach of the year. The thing with Dales winning is such a hard call. Her team won the regular season, but to me Sheila Lambert is the best player in the Big 12 hands down. Of course I am proud of Heather Schreiber because I am a Texas fan. I think she is all that and then some. But I also understand the KSU fans not being happy. The two freshman sensations from KSU are awesome. And then to have Heather Honorable Mention. Does not make sense. The one exception I have to all this is Stacy Stephens not making First Team. I am sorry, but as good as Ohlde is, I think Stephens deserved it just as much if not more. She is a force all around. In whatever way we disagree with these selections, all these players were truly awesome this year. Congratulations!!!

Actually, Lambert has received POW three times.

So much for trusing UT athletic department press releases. I just looked at the big 12 site and see that Lambert and Crockrum and Stevens all had the distinction of being POW twice. I didn't see Lambert's name three times unless I just have a mental bloc or something. Hey, she's my POY. So, Lambert and Crockrum make the first team, not Stevens. Still kind of proves my point, right?

Lambert just got the most recent one, for her third. Jordan Davis from BU also got FOW, her first.

No, that was included on the list. Sorry. I can't figure out where you are getting three.

Apparently from my imagination, sorry.
I just read about the recent one and my (faulty) memory had recorded two previously.

She's so humble.
Stacy on winning the POY:
"This is especially gratifying because I'm in associated with such a talented group of basketball players in the Big 12," Dales said. "I'm sure it wasn't an easy decision for the coaches but I'm very proud that I was chosen and I'm proud I'm able to represent the University of Oklahoma.
"Our having four All-Big 12 selections doesn't surprise me a bit. We have a great team and it's nice to see others get recognition. I'm very proud of my teammates and excited for their successes. Our success on an individual level only makes our team better."
It is notable that Deb Patterson's selection as Big 12 Coach of the Year is the very first time the winner of that award did NOT coach the conference champion (or co-champion) team.
