Kansas State had another good game against a decent UWGB team. They had 22 points on fast breaks to none for UWGB so in this case speed kills. The four freshman are still starting every game with sophomore Nicole Ohlde at center. Laurie Koehn was 7 of 9 from three point range and was high scorer with 27. With these kids you get lots of talent but also lots of inconsistency. So far there are always players stepping up when needed and the shooting percentage has been great. Seven and one against better competition than we played last year looks good to me though. Go Big XII.

Hey KSUron. Great to have you on board here at HoopScoop. We've been missing input from KSU fans, but now we've got it. And just in time considering KSU is probably the youngest, most exciting team in conference. Koehn and Wecker should lead that team to some great things in a couple of years.

Thanks schooner! We also see Megan Mahoney as a real strong freshman. She had 21 points last night. She has been leading the team in assists but fell down there last night. She is a good rebounder and a team player also. Kendra Wecker had a true "freshman game" for the first time last night. Five points, four fouls and just pretty much ugly. On the other hand UWGB picked up lots of fouls guarding her and Nicole Ohlde. It was the first time Kendra has not been in double figures scoring. In the last game she had 17 points and 20 rebounds so you know its going to up and down with these freshman. I'll take a 19 point win over a program with back to back 20 win seasons any time.

This is a great site. I really like the lack of demeaning "trash talk".

KSUron....welcome! Heck, we are so glad to have a Kansas State fan aboard, no way we'll run you off.

Really like Kansas State's potential this year, believe they may be the "dark horse" of the conference, much like Baylor's success.

The new-look K State is great for the Big 12, but it worries me on Iowa State's behalf. K State gave ISU all kinds of trouble when K State was a pretty WEAK team, and now they have two absolute all-star freshmen along with a matured Ohlde. If anything, their team's already excellent three-point shooting may have improved. That probably means, at the least, that another very tough road game has materialized on Iowa State's schedule . . .

There are two ways to beat Iowa State:

The Kansas way: Play very physical and knock the ISU shooters out of their rhythm.

The Kansas State way: Neutralize the ISU zone with both a strong post presence and great perimeter shooting.

You would think that option #1 would only work if the officials don't call it tight, but that's often not the case. I have learned from experience (and this has been independently confirmed by other ISU fans) that once the officials realize that they are calling a lot more fouls on ISU's opponent than on ISU (since ISU doesn't foul much), they try to make it more even, no matter how the teams' styles differ.

Good points on the officials calls. I think you are right in saying the refs often "balance" the calls. The crew we had last night let almost everything go at times and then would appear to make compensating calls. One example, KSU's Andrea Armstrong literally knocked a UWGB player (who had the ball) completely flat and out of out of bounds, no call. We went to the other end and a K-State player was called for a touch foul and I'm not even sure there was a touch. None of that mattered last night but in a tight game it sure can. By the way, Kendra Wecker may damage our gentile reputation a bit. Armstrong also seems re-energized this year and she likes contact also. Other than that, and some muscle from Megan Mahoney, K-State is still a kind and gentle crew.

It seems to me that teams that are playing short like Texas Tech are kind of vulnerable to physical teams for the reason you stated. Also, it seems to me, the officials, like poll voters, make calls on expectaion. Welle and Ohlde are not going to pick up a lot of fouls partly because they are not expected to, and they are graceful in their moves.
