Noticed in recent discussion more Okies on the board, both OU fans (hiss!) and Cowgirls (YAY!) and was wondering where y'all are.
I've been in Missouri 15 years and follow the Lady Tigers with season tickets. But I'm still an Okie at heart...born in Stillwater, grew up in Edmond and went to UCO back when it was Central State. My family WAS all OSU people, but my brother's at OU Med now so we're a split family now.
I'm good and homesick, and would love to talk Oklahoma with the folks on here. I AM delighted by the recent success of the Sooners (except for Saturday) and hope to see it followed in Stillwater. I even remember watching the old 6 on 6 girls hoops at Edmond High...does ANYONE still play that?

If you are asking where we live.....well I live in Norman.

Nope. 6-on-6 has been laid to rest. And I fall firmly in the group saying good riddance to it. It's time to move on and not keep girls at a disadvantage that have a chance for a D1 scholarship. My family moved to Oklahoma when my sister was in the 8th grade. We moved from Tennessee in 1985 and she had to adjust by going from 5 on 5 to 6 on 6. She hated it immensely. Luckily the conversion to 5 on 5 was made before she graduated from high school.

Hey Daddo, I'm an OU fan living in Lewisville, TX (Dallas area).
I grew up in OK--small town of Chickasha, and played 6-6 through my sophomore year of HS. I went to a really small school then, so transferred in 89-90 to a 4A school to have the opportunity to play full court. It was sorta an adjustment--a 5'9 post with no ball handling skills nor much defensive skills...I was used to planting myself on the blocks, posting up, turning and shooting! Anyhow...went on to a juco and played for 2 extra years. I think I ended up a small forward.
I graduated from UCO and grad school from OSU (OU didn't have my program of study, or I'd have been there)! Been an OU fan for as long as I can remember...was sorta born into it.
6-6 was one funky sport. I'm pretty sure Iowa and Oklahoma were the last two states to give up 6-6. I couldn't remember when the switch happened, but the records show a single state champion (6-6) from 1926-1984. The large schools switched in 84-85 (so there was a single champion in each sport). Everyone else finally switched in 93-94, and they split the teams into the current 4-class format. I lived in a smallish Iowa town until 1992 (beginning of 7th grade) so I've seen quite a few 6-6 games in my life.

Iowa six-on-six was the best. Endless excitement, and one of best state tournament weeks you could attend.
Whether you liked the game or not, you couldn't deny what it meant to be standing at Veterans Auditorium and have your town's light still on all week.
Only Indiana does it better, and Indiana ruined there's by going to class basketball.
That is what I liked best about Iowa in the six-on-six era. There could be only one.

okie from Norman.
I played 6 on 6 for 4 years here in Norman back a ways back http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
Once I moved to Louisiana, I played 5 man the last 2 years, it's a different game.....I didn't have that difficult of a transition......I am glad 6 on 6 is gone because of the disadvantage that it put Oklahoma players in.....didn't parts of Kansas also have it like Oklahoma until recently.

In an attempt to divert attention from the KMR debate, I have a question for the Okies...Something that I have always wondered about. How did the OU - OSU games get tabbed with the "bedlam" moniker? Does "bedlam" apply only to FB and BB, or to all sports?

I don't know from where or for how long the bedlam term has been around, but it does apply to all sports.

bedlam means "a place, scene, or state of uproar and confusion" and was originally used for Oklahoma vs Oklahoma State wrestling back in its hey-day in the 60s and 70s. The wrestling matches were always rather raucous events.
Now bedlam is applied to every OU vs OSU event.

mc, for the last 2 years, they have picked up a sponsor who awards a "bedlam bell" (crystal) to the winning sport. I don't know exactly how this works overall, because the women's BB team has/will have the bell until next season......I know as in the men's BB game, they split, so I don't think either school retains the bell in their possession........
I think OU is behind in the overall series this year. I'm also not certain if the winning university overall gets anything except bragging rights.
Well, all of you know I have Burnt Orange running through my veins. It's also no secret on this message board that I'm very proud of other programs in the state of Texas, such as Tech, Baylor, SFA, TCU, Rice, and U of H. But what most of you DON'T know is that I grew up on both sides of the Red River within a 20 mile stretch on HWY 75. When I was growing up, absolutely THE thing to do was to watch the Colbert Leopardettes play six-on-six. I've been all over the state of Oklahoma following them and used to listen on the radio when I couldn't find a way to the games. When I got old enough, I drove myself through winter storms and all just to see my girls play. I even listened in to them at the State Tourney from the radio in my hospital room when I had my first knee surgery. As a male ball player, nobody ever quite understood my obsession with the women's game. But I'll tell you as someone who LOVES basketball: When you watch a good women's game, you will not get a more perfect example of basketball (the way Dr Naismith intented for it to be played). If you really understand the game, there is no way you can not appreciate women's hoops. On the flip side, I couldn't care less what happens in the NBA of Men's NCAA until the finals. I've always been that way and probably always will be. So all of you who know about my love of Texas Women's Hoops, now you know about my sentimental attachment to OU. A couple of our best players from Colbert went to OU - - Joyce Parker and Bonita Turner. Sure, I want UT to win against everybody. But I sure am proud of OU, just like I am of the other programs in Texas. I'm glad OU has not only established themselves as a top program, but also as a FIRST CLASS ACT!!! Good luck to ALL of my teams in the NCAA'S (and, of course, especially to my Lady 'Horns).
