View Full Version : Fourth Annual Hoopscoop Convention

We have decided to meet at a restaurant called Lilly's which is located in the Marriott Hotel directly across from Municipal Arena, across Ellis Plaza. It is the meeting place of our very first Hoopscoop Convention when we were a party of 5.
Meeting time is 2:30, March 10th until we leave to go to the Thursday nite session game's, probably around 5 pm. Games start at 6 pm and four groups will probably want to attend spirit rallies.
Two illustrious guests will be joining us this year: Mechelle Voepel and Brenda VanLengen, FSN.
Though we tried to get away from the restaurant idea, there will be no FAN tent in Ellis plaza, and the Convention Center wants $175 to rent space. We could locate no other "space" that was conveniently located and FREE.
We aren't necessarily planning for a "meal" as we did last year. I found that I didn't get to get around and meet many people last year that way; so I plan to eat beforehand. But, everyone can certainly make there own decision where that is concerned.
Right now, it appears that we will have about 20-25 people. Our team representation isn't nearly as spread out as it was last year. So far, we are
:bu: :cu: :ksu: :nu: :ou: :ttu: :isu:
I encourage some of the Iowa State fans, in particular, because I know there will be a bunch of you all there; but that still leaves 5 teams with no representation. We REALLY, REALLY don't bite :D
Last year, we had several of the player's parents join us and I hope they will
once again.....and any of the other "lurkers" who haven't quite joined our merry band yet.
See you all in Kansas City!!!!!!

I'm in the throes of depression that I won't make the Big 12 tournament for the first time in 5 or 6 years. I know there are Texas fans going, so I hope they'll show up and do some hoopscooping. The ones I know who are heading to KC are mostly lurkers, but maybe they'll go and say hi for horntooter.
:ut:
I'd love to be there, but I'm in the middle of a move that makes it virtually impossible. We may make the drive if ISU makes the finals and we can score tickets, but we won't be able to come any earlier than that.

I thought long and hard about this. My mom (isubballfan asked for the time off- although because of a meeting couldn't leave until Wed.) I didn't think I could asked of work, but today decided that what the heck, I put in a note for time off, and so isubballfan and myself are tentatively planning to come on down. I be more firm in our confirmation on Sat. March 5.

Not to hijack the thread ... is hoopscoop doing anything at the NCAA in Dallas?

Did I just hear a volunteer? That is all it takes - someone to find a place to meet and set a time and see who else wants to get together! We won't be there but I am SURE a bunch of TT and T fans will be so it might be a great get together!

Ack........
already down the middle of page 2 tonite :)
It's a busy time on the board, swok. But honestly, with Mechelle and Brenda there, WOW! We must be getting some good pub somewhere, because although I think we are for the most part an amiable bunch, I can't envision us as the movers and shakers of the NCAA basketball world.
Who woulda thunk it?

We are "read" by the best in the business....Mechelle, Brenda, Debbie and others and we are the best board in WBB bar none!
Hopefully, you'll have some parents again, that was really fun.

Four schools will have spirit rallies during the Women’s Tournament. Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Texas will hold rallies in the Bartle Hall Conference Center adjacent to Municipal Auditorium. Food and beverages will be available.
Iowa State will hold a rally each day it plays, two hours prior to gametime.
Texas will hold a rally each day it plays, 1 1/2 hours prior to gametime.
K-State will hold a rally in between sessions each day it plays.
Oklahoma information is still to be determined.

I think Tech is having a fanfest of some kind as well...
Guys, I can't make it this year. I've tried and tried to wangle free, but just got word that my daughter's class has a program on the night of the 10th. I've missed too many of her games, shows, and parties already this year due to work and school; and besides my KC 'window' was only gonna be about 20 hours all told.
So you won't be graced by my magnetic presence and boundless insight this year. Dearly wish I could be there to hob-nob and hang out, but I'll have to catch the action from my living room and HoopScoop this time. C'est la vie.
Enjoy the week and Hook 'em Horns to all. :ut:

If anyone is looking for a place to kill time between sessions and grab something to eat - you should walk north on Broadway to either Tanner's or the Quaff. Just a few blocks away from Municipal.

It was really nice to have Stacy Stephens and Jamie Carey's mothers at last year's Hoopscoop gathering. Perhaps there were other family members present as well. Then to see the two Texas moms at the games wearing those orange wigs and cheering enthusiastically. They had fun and did a great job supporting the Texas team.
Regret I can't make Kansas City....too much distance with too much going on trying to get the company set up here in Egypt. Those reading the board should know that any fan of NCAA women's basketball is welcomed to the Hoopscoop gathering. You don't have to post in order to be included.

Although Lilly is now called the original meeting place of the first HoopScoop get-together..... I remember an earlier get-together way back at the very beginning of the Big 12 between myself, "hoopjnky", and another guy that I believe was a Kansas State fan and also wrote for the AP. I can't remember his name though. We first met at Tanner's. That may have been 1997. Or was it 1998? Hmmmmm, can't remember.

I hope y'all don't mind if a broken-down old radio play-by-play announcer joins y'all?
Seriously, I plan to swing by and say hello if it's alright. Not sure how long I can stay though. I hope to be busy later that evening. I'll even try and bring by my color partner and former Big 12 single season blocked shot recordholder, Crystal Boles. (Greenwalt passed her the other night. It ain't easy gettin' old, is it Boles?)
Hope to see many of you great fans in KC. As always, come up and say hello.

Work schedules limit our time to Tuesday and Wednesday, so we'll miss the gathering. If anyone is in the area of section 32, we'll be in red.

Ryan, I used to listen to you a lot when I worked in Altus, OK. When weather conditions were just right, we could get the game in Lubbock, and I loved your play-by-play work. All I had to do was shut my eyes and, BAM!, I was there in the arena!
I'm just sick that I can't be there to meet you. Maybe next year?
And I'm sure that you will be plenty busy Thursday night! Have a great time and thanks for coming to our little convention. We appreciate you guys and all you bring to the game.

How could I forget the Ohldes?!?! It was great talking with them. Another year older with the memory getting worse. YIKES! Maybe if they had worn purple wigs it would have jogged my memory much like those orange things worn by the UT moms.

Mrs. nativetechsan and yours truly are going to invite Cisti Greenwalt's parents to the gathering. We met them for the first time in Kansas City when Cisti was a Freshman. We have become friends over the past four years and I know you all would enjoy meeting them.

T,
Ryan and Crystal are my idols.
Alesha and Judith and Darrice are my heroines.
Um, in answer to that earlier question -- I know NOTHING about Big D from a sports perspective. I just wondered if there were plans afoot or anything. I'm sure :ut: and :ttu: fans will be abundant...

I'm sure going to miss the get-together today. Unfortunately as I'm stuck back in N TX doing work! :(
Hope the gathering is just as great as last year's, if not better. Also please let Mechelle know how much I've enjoyed reading her reports in The Star. :)

I am posting this from home as isubballfan and myself left kc this morning. I'm sorry we will not be at the hoopscoop meeting, but I'll get to that in a second.
It was a very disappointing trip to kc. We couldn't come till Wed. Yesterday we arrived in kc at 11:30am and checked into a hotel outside of kc. Left for Municipal and got lost ending up at Kemper instead. We then found Municipal, parked and headed for the arena. We ran into a guy from Iowa who hooked us up with front row tickets right next to Wild Bill. We get in the arena, and there are people in are seats. We ask a usher as the people there used the excuse that municpal forgot a couple seats. The usher does nothing so we still somewhere else, and then those people showed. So we complained to superior event staff, and she showed us to our seats which were the ones people were sitting. She explained to the people there that they had that section, but the tickets were for a couple rows up.
Then the ISU game. Not going to say much. Although the actions of others pep band left to be desired.
We then left the arena, and went to the Marriott to wait. I then got the idea of going to see isu get on the bus. When we got there most of the players were on. We cheered the ones on the bus and ones we saw get on the bus. Other fans and family were there also. Isubballfan went to get tickets and when the team left I was the only one left. I waved to them as the bus took off, and at that moment the emotion of senior night and ( on senior night I didn't get too emtional) I realized how little there is left and broke down. We went to go into the game and the ticket person said the tickets were for Thurs. when isubballfan had clearly asked for wed. tonight. They exchanged tickets and we went in. I thought I could watch other big 12 games with the thought that isu maybe done, but I was wrong. I had gone through every emotion, happy, shock, angry, sad, and was now a emotionless drone. I walked around the upper inner circle of municipal to possibly look for posters. If you saw a young "big" guy wearing a red #11 iowa state jersey that was me. Last night isubbballfan felt sick, and by morning wasn't feeling well at all. So we left for home and now are home. Sorry to all who expected to see us. I wish our last memory of kc wasn't so horrible.
Go :bu: MAKE IT 3 WINS OVER TECH AND WIN THE WHOLE TOURNAMENT!!!!!!
