View Full Version : Why is ISU so pretty?

Just a question from a male perspective. Since I started following women's basketball about four years ago, Iowa State has always had the prettiest teams in the Big 12. I was noticing again during the Texas game that every Cyclone on the floor was a beautiful young lady.
I'm not trying to say anything negative about Fennelly (who I think is a good coach and a classy guy), but is it possible he seeks out the good-looking players? Maybe as a way to keep attendance high? Or is it actually just working out that the talent he gets happens to be pretty?

Your thoughts, especially ISUers...

I have always thought that Bill has a good eye for talent. ;)

It does seem to me like your observations are correct. Of course its also true that most of the time they can shoot long range bombs. :)

Don't like this topic.

Athletics are one of the few places where women can perform and earn our respect and admiration for their skill and hard work. Society spends enough time telling women they should get attention by being pretty. Why should fans of the sport care what the kids look like?

Just my thought.

Well Horns, I can understand your point, but I am not trying to objectify the players. I'm simply asking if it is coincidence or planned that most if not all of the Cyclones fit society's definition of beautiful.

I certainly don't want to offend. I do think too much attention gets paid to looks (often by women as well as men) but I think talent and ability are widely respected. That certainly applies to female doctors that I know as well as nurses, administrators and other hospital employees.

I celebrate the skills and abilities of the players and support them for the way they play and their attitudes and not how they look. I get judged by how I look each and every day. That's why most days you will see me in a suit and tie and why my hair is not necessarily its natural color. ;) Good or bad that's a fact of life for me and most people, male or female who are in visible positions. In reality a very sad fact of life is that being too pretty is a problem for some women in some positions. I expect that we both have a problem with people who can't get beyond looks to value the person underneath. I do notice looks and so does almost everyone. I don't think that's bad in and of itself.

My mother once told me that , just by putting a smile on your face does more than any amount of make-up. Ever look at those serious - tough looking snapshots for the media guides some teams do - Why ??
I watched the tape of the game on Saturday, and they showed several close ups of T. Jackson, you know her expression Never changed, I couldn't tell if she was even enjoying the game - and the way she was excelling, she should have !.
Bill does stress everyday, from what I hear, how fortunate each player is and to be thankful for all the things off the basketball court too. when you can combine that with a few wins, everybody is happy,( including Bill!) But mostly agree with ISUBBALLFAN - Coincidence !

Pretty is is a point guard that can penetrate and dish. Pretty is a post with sweet moves and a desire to sweep every board. Pretty is the team that thrives on success and learns from failure.

Pretty is what most of the players in the Big 12 are. As representatives of their schools and their sport, we have as good a bunch as there is.

And that's all I need to know.

YCN, as always, you put things into perspective.

It's mighty fine to see you back here, sister. Don't be a stranger, and remember: pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...

This is one big problem with WBB fans. Instead of trying to educate and help a newcomer to WBB, you rip him. Call him names. Say he's immature.

Well it's long time posters and fans who should grow up. If you look at media guides and posters of WBB teams many have the players in dresses and if you know anything about today's fashion for young women they are not loose fitting or do they cover up much leg.

Also notice the OSU fan said Iowa and SURROUNDING states.

If women look at Tom Brady as some kind of sex symbol, why is that ok? But if a man looks at Laura Andrew as a sex symbol that's wrong? Give me a break.

I do disagree that ISU has the best looking team in the Big 12. It's OU by far. Laura Andrews, Erin Higgins.

Arizona St has the best looking team in the nation.

Cowgirlfan, don't feel bad about your post. You are exactly right, many, many women choose who they are rooting for in the Super Bowl based on the attractiveness of the QB. That is OK but if a guy, who enjoys women's basketball, should happen to notice that some of the players are attractive, he is a pig. I think this should be a good thing for the women's sport. Male athletes have been used as sex symbols for years. And many derogatory and inflammatory comments have been made about female athletes. I think it is awesome for women that they can be muscular, athletic and considered sexy. Look at the Williams' sisters. And they are good at what they do. Women have been up in arms before about men only being attracted to pencil thin models or Anna Kournikova when she can't play tennis to save her life. Now we mention that a very good athlete and physically fit woman is attractive and we get slammed for it. My solution is to never again refer to ANY woman as attractive. Apparently it is insulting ;)

Well I will get off my soapbox now and cast my biased vote for KSU as the most attractive team in the Big XII. Claire Coggins, Megan Mahoney....and I admit to having a bit of a crush on Kendra Wecker. And if any of you have a problem with me finding Wecker attractive, you can take it up with her. She'll kick your butt...
