DALLAS -- Oklahoma State’s Tari Cummings was named Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and Texas’ Heather Schreiber earned Big 12 Rookie of the Week in a vote of a media panel for games played from Feb. 11-17.
Cummings, a 5-11 senior forward, averaged 18.5 points and six rebounds last week while helping Oklahoma State to wins over Texas Tech and Iowa State. It was OSU’s first wins against ranked opponents in consecutive games in school history. Against Tech, Cummings scored the Cowgirls’ final six points, including a three-point play with eight seconds remaining to give OSU the lead for good and snap an 11-game losing streak to the Lady Raiders. She was 6-of-13 from the field, 7-of-9 from the free throw line and grabbed six rebounds and two steals. The Pocola, Okla., native went 7-of-12 from the field and 4-of-6 from the charity stripe against Iowa State. She recorded 18 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Schreiber, a 6-2 freshman forward, averaged 20 points and six rebounds in Texas’ upset win over No. 3 Tennessee, 69-66 in Knoxville, and a loss at Baylor. Against Tennessee, Schreiber had 12 points and seven rebounds, getting nine of the those points and five of those rebounds in the second half. The Windthorst, Texas, native followed with a career-high tying and game-high 28 points, aided by a 10-for-11 free throw effort, as No. 18 Texas fell to No. 11 Baylor, 76-69. Texas becomes only the third team to beat Tennessee more than once at home at the Thompson-Boling Arena, joining Connecticut and Louisiana Tech. Schreiber grabbed two defensive rebounds in the final two minutes to help preserve the win. On the week, Schreiber was in double figures for the 21st and 22nd times (in 24 games), leading Texas in that category. She has now been in double-figure scoring 11 straight games, hitting for 190 points in this stretch -- a 17.3 ppg average.
