Hopefully they learned a few things today.
Our Tech had a good lead twice and then seemed to relax a bit on defense and there came the Hokies. It sounded like a pretty ugly game with weird fouls on both sides. The bench seemed to disappear again.
Neither team shot very well...both below 40%.
Our Tech however continues to do a great job at the free throw line... 84% but got outrebounded...not a good sign.
Cisti had a terrific game with 14 pts, 12 boards, 7 blocks, 3 assists and was named tourney MVP.
Davis was terrific...her emotion and passion come through even over the radio!

According to the box score, Griffin only played 4 minutes for Texas Tech. What's up with that? Is she injured? I wouldn't have put her in for Davis, but I would have put her in for somebody.

When the going gets a little tough, Marsha sticks to those she trusts and right now, that's her starters. This won't get us very far down the stretch.

Another number that jumped out at me from the box scores this morning (as listed in the paper) was rebounds. Tech had only 14 (and Cisti had all of those?) vs 50+ for Va Tech? Made me wonder where everybody else was. I know that La Toya and Chelsi rebound well generally.

ok, after further research, I see the rebound #s listed in the paper were apparently inaccurate. 43 total for TT, according to Yahoo box scores, which is more like it. Glad to know that everybody else didn't take the evening off and just leave the jumping to Cisti! ;)

Two of Tech 's best subs didn't get in the game much. Darrice Griffin subs for Davis but Davis was having a fantastic offensive game and needed to stay on the court. Griffin's rebounding was sorely missed.
Virginia Tech has some big guards. Judith Smith didn't get into the game much because having her and Eriin Grant in the backcourt together is kind of a small lineup.
Sharp just needs to get over that and let the youngsters give the starters some rest.
The game turned when Erin Grant got into foul trouble and had to sit on the bench for an extended period during the second half.

The game was extremely rough! VT had about four really big p/f's whose real job seemed to be enforcers. Every time Cisti touched the ball, she was hammered and hacked on both sides. Chesley and Alesha also received unloving attention. On the rare occasions when a foul was called underneath, the VA coach just rotated in another one. Never saw so many moving screens. Think the refs called it once. Weird, weird calls the whole game. Particularly at the end.
That said, VT seemed to want it more than we did. They made more rebounds and hustle plays. Of course nobody wanted it more than LaToya, who played her heart out, and as always, Erin played hers out, too, but she couldn't do much from the bench. We still had a chance at the end, but the shots wouldn't fall.
We got off to a great start and then seemed to be satisfied to coast. Ran some beautiful fast breaks, then missed the lay ups. Worked really hard to get the open shot, then missed the shot. When we tried to crank it up again the engine just kept misfiring.
In defense of Marsha, she put in Judith Smith when we got ahead, but she was very careless with the ball, seemed inclined to improvise rather than run offense, and missed a chippie and jump shot. They were all over Alesha like a blanket, but she was working hard and playing really good defense. Chesley played great defense and scored a lot early, but her legs seemed dead at the end. Remember, Alesha and Chesley ran motion practically the whole game the day before.
Just hope they can regroup and play a tough Penn State team tomorrow.
I'm sorry we missed Beerman and ISU3ptman. Looked for beerman in the pub
Thursday night, and ate there Friday night but probably left too early. :(
Chesley and Alesha also received unloving attention.
:D That made me laugh.

elfdenmom, sorry we missed you as well in Vegas. It was an incredible trip, with waaaay too much stuff to do.
I have to agree that some of the calls were strange. I wonder if the refs allow a more physical type of play in the Mountain West? It seemed that in both of the games the refs were letting a lot go. But they were consistent both ways.
VIVA LAS VEGAS!

Sorry we missed you guys too. We only went to the pub on Thur....thought we'd spend more time there but, it stunk really bad in there....guess they serve alot of fish.....late at night the fish smell was taken out by the cig smoke....so it was pick your poison.....and since there were SO many other options in Vegas, well, we didn't return.
The Va Tech game was just brutal. The Hokies gameplan was to play it rough and let the chips fall where they may. Made since, they had nothing to lose.
....and they hit the jackpot.
The refs let things go. That's fine.
What was frustrating is that tho the LR's responded to the rough play, it seemed like most of our fouls were not hard fouls....especially Erin's....so they did "relax" down the stretch because that had NO idea how to play it.
Judith didn't play the 2nd half. Would have liked to see her get some minutes with Brooke struggling like she did.
Davis was just awesome. Was a shame that she was left off the all-Tourney team.....was that thing picked prior to the game???
Had a great time otherwise....it was more crowded than I've ever seen it and we were there 2 years ago for New Years.
Came back ahead in the gambling budget but WAY behind in the food budget.....dang we ate and drank alot.
