Norman, Okla. – Stephanie McGhee, arguably the greatest basketball player in Oklahoma high school history, was named the Big 12’s Preseason Freshman of the Year, the conference office announced Tuesday. McGhee, a 6-0 guard/forward, became the first girl in the state of Oklahoma to score more than 3,000 points during her prep career at Pocola and Howe. She also set Oklahoma’s five-on-five scoring mark of 3,376 points, breaking the old record by more than 600 points.
The three-time Gatorade Player of the Year and Daily Oklahoman Super 5 pick can score as evident by her 30 points per game average over the last three years, but she’s accountable in other areas as well. As a high school senior at Howe, she grabbed 12.3 rebounds, dished out 2.7 assists and pocketed 4.4 steals per game to go along with her 31.1 ppg.
“Stephanie is a very talented kid,” said OU coach Sherri Coale. “She is as offensively capable as any freshman we’ve ever had here. She is an outstanding three point shooter, which she couples with an uncanny knack for getting to the rim. While she obviously has a lot to learn, she has a real chance to be a special player here.”
Sooner teammate Dionnah Jackson was one of seven Big 12 players who earned votes for the Preseason All-Big 12 team. The five-person All-Big 12 Preseason team consists of Texas’ Tiffany Jackson, Jamie Carey and Heather Schreiber, Baylor’s Sophia Young and Kansas State’s Kendra Wecker. Wecker was chosen the Big 12’s Preseason Player of the Year.
Texas and Texas Tech shared the honor of Preseason Newcomer of the Year in Daria Mieloszynska (UT) and Patrice Edwards (TTU).
