View Full Version : Cindy Stein gets contract extension to 08
Missouri has extended Coach Stein's contract to 2008 and raised her base salary from $165,000 to $180,000 per year.

I would have sent her packing, bag and baggage!
I can understand some reasons you might feel that way. If you or I were the Mizzou A.D. we might feel differently. So far as I know Coach Stein has run a clean program and at Missouri that has to count for something right now. I would imagine the A.D. has a sufficient plate full of stuff to deal with without looking for a new women's basketball coach. I was a little surprised that the extension was for as long as it was myself.
I do wish her well. It looks to me from the outside that she has a rough road for the next couple of years.

The infamous girl's fight of last year told me all I need to know about both programs. KU's coach is gone, but I know how they operate in Missouri. So, extending Stein's contract is the way they reward such behavior at Missouri.

"KU's coach is gone, but I know how they operate in Missouri. So, extending Stein's contract is the way they reward such behavior at Missouri."
If memory serves me right, the Kansas kids started that altercation, and players involved from both teams were disciplined. You can hardly lay that on the feet of Cindy Stein.
While an extension to 2008 may or may not be the best move, Cindy Stein's performance in the last three seasons doesn't warrant her termination. She has five straight postseason appearances and two NCAA berths including a trip to the Sweet 16.
Why exactly would you fire her?

The infamous girl's fight of last year told me all I need to know about both programs. KU's coach is gone, but I know how they operate in Missouri.
It appeared to me that Cindy Stein handled the situation completely appropriately. Even though news reports indicated that Kansas players provoked the altercation, Stein refused to point fingers. She made no excuses for her players and made it plain that the behavior was inappropriate.
I agree with Jimi and Chipper's comments about Stein's performance and with Jimi about the outlook for the near future.

I thought the program at Missouri was getting stale, maybe not?

Stein came out and punished her players before the Big XII handed down their punishments.
I thought Stein handled it wonderfully.........unlike KU's Washington.
So, I agree with Chipper, Jimi and Carolann :)

bigred, I was responding to the strength of your 'send her packing' comment and to your comments regarding the fight last year. I'm not endorsing Stein so much as saying I'd give her some more time and I think she has shown integrity and backbone. As said, I thought Stein handled the player fight well. Recruiting needs to improve. I don't see Missouri being very competitive in the Big 12 this season.

Stein's a very good coach, and her handling of the fight incident was absolutely appropriate.
She's not been given time to build a top-notch program, especially given the lack of resources and support at times from the school.
Mizzou opens the season in a great new facility where women's basketball doesn't dress in a broom closet or practice in the attic. If the school ever starts properly promoting the sport, it'll go like gangbusters here.
Renewing her contract was the only logical move for M.U., we're lucky to have her back it's going to be great to watch the program continue to rise.
(Oh, and a side note...any chance you could get the new OSU logo for the icon list? That one's 3 or 4 years out of date.)

Thanks for the input Daddo. Fans like me don't always know or remember to consider the support or lack thereof given to the coaches. I didn't know about the new facilities. That is good news.

Another vote for Stein. I don't know enough to comment on her x's and o's but her handling of the fight got my unqualified "CHARACTER COUNTS" vote.
