The big night is coming up. We're looking to the Lady Longhorns to show the SEC just what the BIG 12 is made of.
The rivalry between the Lady Vols and the Lady 'Horns is a long standing one..since I've been watching wbb, is seems like they always play annually?
Does anyone know long these two teams have been playing each other?
What's the record?
The Burnt Orange and the Bright Orange have been hooking up for quite a while now, with Tennessee leading the all-time series 14-7. The first meeting was during the 78-79 season, a 84-60 Tennessee win in (of all places) Columbia, MO.
The home-and-home series began during the 82-83 season, and Texas dominated the 80's, winning against the Vols on 7 of 8 occasions during that decade. One particular highlight for the Horns was a 97-78 drubbing of the Vols in December, 1987, on the night that the Vols first played in their new Thompson-Boling arena. A crowd of 24,563 witnessed that contest, a women's basketball attendance record that stood for several years. The 'Horns last win in the series was a 69-67 thriller in Austin in January, 1989.
Since then, the Vols have pretty much had their way, winning 12 consecutive contests. There have been a couple of close calls, including an overtime affair in Austin in the 96-97 season and last year's close game in Austin as well.
Strangely enough, the two teams have never met in postseason play. The Vols won their first national title in the Erwin Center in 1987, a Final Four that saw Texas lose to La Tech in the semifinal round.
The UT/UT series has certainly seen its share of great players: Tamika Catchings, Andrea Lloyd, Bridgett Gordon, Edwina Brown, Tonya Edwards, Kamie Ethridge, Chamique Holdsclaw, Clarissa Davis, Mary Ostrowski, Annette Smith... the list goes on and on. The one constant in the series has been the two Hall of Fame Coaches - Conradt and Summitt, each with over 700 victories in their careers.
Here's hoping the tide turns again soon in the Longhorns' favor. Tuesday night would be great! But first, we have some business to take care of with the Cowgirls of OSU.

Here is one Lady Raider fan who would absolutely love to see the Horns beat the Lady Vols. I believe they have the players to do it this year. Stacey Stephens is a terrific player and Heather Schrieber is unbelievably talented and poised for a senior. (I know she is a freshman, but she certainly doesn't play like one.)
Tracy Cook always has the potential for a great game, and I hope she has one against Tennessee! The main drawback is the venue.
Wish they were playing this one in the Drum!

here's a really great article about Tennessee.....
http://espn.go.com/ncw/s/2002/0209/1326107.html
Tenn's post player line up is in flux. Gwen Jackson is out (separated shoulder), Michelle Snow may not start (just got in the dog house), and Ashley Robinson may start in her place (just got out of the dog house).
The match up in the post looks good for Texas. TN is not a physical rebounding/defending post team even when all are playing. Plus dispite a height disadvantage, Stacey Stephens is the type of player that can be physically assertive vs TN. She is a load.
Good luck Longhorns...pound the ball inside.

Hey, HEY! What's THAT supposed to mean? ;-)
There were probably DOZENS of Columbians excited about that game here!
We're on the tail end of "getting" women's basketball, here, I suppose.
