Now this is a box score that was a pleasure to read.

It been a year since Nebraska beat a top 25 team. (Last win? Nebraska def. #25 UC-Santa Barbara..November 19, 2000)

Since then its been downhill. But a fast start Sunday, gave Nebraska a lead against Kansas State, but weapons old and new led to happy day for Nebraska fans.

WHY NEBRASKA WON.

1. Nebraska went back to its roots.
The 1997-1998 Cornhuskers won 23 games on the strength of defense, rebound and a patient but attacking offense.
Nebraska played excellent defense inside and outside. There were breakdowns. Each Kansas State run was built on getting Nebraska to chase due to good passing, but the Huskers were able to bear down and man up on people.
Everybody played well. Koehn and Booker couldn't go anywhere that a Howell, a Cannon or a Johansen weren't. They spent more time trying to get free than run the offense, and that's a good sign.
Underneath, Nicole Ohlde did get 19 points, but she had to work for a lot of them. And as many times as she did get her points she also found passes to her ending up in Nebraska hands.
Kendra Wecker had a solid game, but Katie Robinette and Stephanie Jones did a good job on her. But you can tell in both cases, the problem K-State had with Nebraska's spirited perimeter defense was hurting their inside game.
The rebound number was shocking. 48-29???? Nebraska hasn't done well on the boards in 5 years. Cannon had 16 of them. Robinette added 12 of them.

2. Jina Johansen.
Paul Sanderford said after the freshman's effort against Colorado that she earned a place in the rotation. In 39 minutes Sunday, she took a role much different from her role in HS. At Cairo Centura, she was "The Jina Show" A scoring quarterback whos role was to gets the crowd jumping and the scoreboard lit up.
Against Kansas State her job was to run the show, and open the door for other to score. She had 9 assists against 2 turnover and kept her poise against and attacking Wildcat defense.
To really understand what Jina accomplished, look at what Cannon (27 points), and Robinette (15 points), did offensively. For the first time, both had room to do what they do best. Much of that came from a more patient offense scheme and the point guard who ran it well.
Jina looks like a 12-year old out there, but she played like an All-Big 12 senior in this outing. It may be a while before she leaves the floor.

3. Katie Robinette with 10:30 to go in regulation.
Situation: 50-46, Nebraska, but Kansas State is coming back.
9:30 left: Robinette drives in between Kristin Rethman and Nicole Ohlde.
9:03 left: Robinette blocks a Mahoney drive to the basket.
8:27 left: Robinette hits the floor to win a key possession
7:55 left: Robinette steals a pass from Rethman intended for Wecker
7:37 left: Robinette drives inside and squares up a perfect jumper from 12 feet
6:35 left: Jina Johansen leads a fast break and send a perfect passes to Robinette who tears over Rethman for the lay up.
The result: 6 points, 3 rebounds, 1 block, 1 steal, a 10-run, and Deb Patterson's crew resigned to defeat.

This wasn't the Tentative "High School All-American" Katie Robinette. This was some South Sioux City Katie Robinette. Nice to see that Katie back, I hope she stays for about three more years.

4. Margaret Richards.
Not a perfect game, but her three steals and out of effort on defense was welcome. She didn't play like she normally does. She came to play today and I like that very much. When you get the bench player making plays, that one more unseen variable for the other team to deal with. And Kansas State was having problem with the trouble they did know about.

5. Paul Sanderford's longer hook.
Paul had my worried in the first half when he brought in Cowgill and Morse, but in the second half he stayed with his people who were producing.

WHY KANSAS STATE LOST (and its has nothing to do with "young people getting tired.)

1. The Wildcats didn't expect such a marked change in Nebraska's game plan. In their last meeting with K-State, the Huskers opened up passive and Kansas State blew them away in the first 6 minutes. This time around, Nebraska attacked, and Kansas State didn't look 100% prepared for it, especially when they had the ball. Kansas State reacted the way a young team does sometimes, they try to force the action and that what hurt them early. To their credit, they didn't stay in catatonia for the entire game, they got off the canvas and fought back.

2. Nebraska took Kansas State out of their game, especially on the perimeter. Nicole Ohlde still had 19 points, but what really changed the game was how she had to earn those points. She had to do more to get in position because the Husker were dealing with the perimeter well. Ohlde and Wecker had to spend more time freeing their guards up and less time getting their own postion in the paint and the blocks. It is something I harp on a lot, but I see it happen in too many games. The best way to deal with strong post players is to go after their guards in many cases. If you can kill the head, the body will die.

3. Kansas State got into foul trouble. Nebraska forced fouls early, and the Wildcats aren't especially deep. When an Ohlde leaves the floor, there is a drop off.

But I will say this for Kansas State: Those kids NEVER quit! They fought back hard after each Nebraska run and they had their chances to make this game different. When Nebraska made the run in the final 10 minutes, I think that took K-State's heart. But Kansas State could have folded in the first half and it could have gotten out of hand, but they smartly worked back in to it. My lasses haven't done that in more than a full season.
Kansas State is a better team than Nebraska, but sun shines on a dog's butt some days, and the Husker dog got a nice tan.

Overall Outlook: WOW! The last time Nebraska played this good was against Creighton. Sunday was great to watch. It was great to see Keasha Cannon get some help, and notice she had her best game ever on a day when she wasn't the only one battling. Katie Robinette seemed in the groove. Steph Jones was getting into it. Shannon Howell played the best defense she's ever played at Nebraska. And I can't say enough about little Jina!!!!!!!! Jina Johansen surprised me. I knew she could play, but she really showed me something, and I hope Paul is a good as his word in saying that Jina will see more time.
Oh speaking of Paul. I haven't seen Paul this locked into the game since his first season. This was the old Paul. In fact I haven't seen him in the bright red jacket and the black sweater since the first season. Maybe he's making a comeback, too.
Speechless? YOU BET!
Now don't get the wrong idea. Nebraska still sucks. This season is still disappointing, but Sunday wiped a lot of sins clean. My girls came to play, but I'm not a believer, yet.

The Huskers now have to build on this. This was a great game, but its only one game. The team can just as easily get caught PUI and botch it against Kansas. I'd like to see the lasses get the roll going. Beat Kansas on the 13th then go down to Oklahoma and beat Oklahoma. That is the next thing on the "to do" list. Beat a team better than us on the road.
Am I smiling! You bet I am. Those girls showed the desire and the showed the smarts. That is what really surprised me. Nebraska has looks somewhat ditzy for the last three or so games. They came out with a game plan, they worked it, and it paid off in smart play.
If nothing else, it was good to see smiles on those young faces Sunday http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
The lasses did it the old fashioned way. THEY EARNED IT! http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

So happy for you Chipper. It has been a long year for you... and me, too.

I was really impressed with Keasha Cannon's performance. She is everything you said she was. Nice she had some help this game.

Pushing, shoving pressure seemed to be the key to disrupting KSU offense. Cutting off the head, does kill the ohlde body!!!!
Koehn looked disheveled and unsure of her dribbling. Tight, recover quick man, knowing when to help did the trick. The fast start was KEY!!!

My wife and I, Chipper fans to the core, oh, and OU fans, snickered all game long, waiting for the "Chipperites" to crumble. Johansen played like a true PG and freed up Cannon et al to do their thing. Where has she been,,,,did she just start practicing or did Paul miss something???? Regardless, glad Chipper is basking , at least for a week.

Speechless, far from it, just took a longer period than normal to organize the post.
