In the latter part of 1995, December 19-21 to be exact. I along with six other Husker fans decided to go to the Carolina's Holiday Beach Classic which was held every year at Myrtle Beach South Carolina. We thought what a great trip this would be where we would get to see the Husker women play 3 games and when they weren't playing we could hit the golf courses. Believe me when I say golf in December is great, but when it's at Myrtle Beach and you make your home in Nebraska in the dead of winter, it's fantastic. A local golf-pro from here in Lincoln went with us and got us on to some unbelievable golf courses.
Anyway, the first round games of the Holiday Classic were started in the afternoon on the 19th. It pitted games with southern mid-major schools going against major D-1 schools. In this tournament Georgia, North Carolina, Iowa and Nebraska were the big name schools. North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell helped run this tournament so she tried to set it up so that the Tarhills would meet Georgia in the finals. After the first round games were finished all major D1 schools had won so the next round was set up to where Nebraska would play North Carolina followed by Georgia going against Iowa.
In the second round Nebraska defeated North Carolina to advance to the championship against Georgia who had defeated Iowa. It's what happened in the Georgia/Iowa game that prompted me to write this.
This game took place right after the North Carolina/Nebraska game and since not more than 200 fans attended this tournament we kept our seats right behind the Georgia bench. Iowa was coached at the time by Angie Lee and if you think KMR from Baylor is animated you haven't seen this gal. I had taken my 8MM video camera along to the game and was recording for my own personal use when my friend Laura told me that I should get footage of Angie Lee carrying on stomping her feet, kicking her chair, throwing her jacket and so forth.
So, I non-chalantly walked over behind the Iowa bench and started filming the temper-tantrum. The only thing is Lee caught me doing it! I then went back to my seat and she went over to one of her assistants, and this assistant coach with clipboard in hand came over to where we were sitting. She reached down and grabbed my video camera, which I wouldn't let go of and demanded I give her my camera. I refused to give an inch. Laura kept telling her "whats wrong with you woman?" By now even Georgia head coach Andy Landers had glanced around to see what the commotion was going on behind his bench with the Iowa assistant coach and the fans behind his bench.
By now the 20 or so Iowa fans are starting to turn against me, one happened to be Iowa's All-American Tangela Smith's mother who accused me of (get this) filming while Iowa was trying to shoot free-throws. This darn Iowa assistant coach was persistent though and wouldn't let it rest. She wanted to know what was on the film. So I told her I was taking pictures of Lee flying off the handle through out the game.
She kept pulling at my video straps demanding I give it up. I finally had to let her know that I wasn't giving up my camera by kindly saying to her "If you don't have 900 blankety-blank dollars for the blankety-blank camera get your blankety-blank hands off it! Needless to say my tone of voice got the message across and she went back to her place on the Iowa bench.
When the game was over I and my other partners in video crime watched Landers & Lee shake hands and he asked her what the commotion was going on behind the bench. She pointed at me and motioned with her hands by her face that I had been taking pictures. They quit talking and Coach Landers turned around faced us winked and gave us the thumbs up. Lee went directly to tournament officials which prompted an announcement over the public address system saying that all camera's and video equipment could no longer be used during the tournament by people other than the media.
Now when we got back to the hotel we just had to see what was recorded on the camera, even Husker coach Angela Beck stopped in to see. I thought I was the center of attention until we turned on the tape only to find out after all that commotion my battery had went dead http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/redface.gif just before I started filming the antics of Angie Lee.
Now you're probably saying to yourself "this is 2004 that story happened nearly ten years ago, how is this pertinent to what's going on today?" Well, I'll tell you. You see that young 1st year assistant coach from Iowa has gone on to bigger & better things in life.
For instance, just last week as a matter of fact she accepted probably her biggest achievement in her coaching career so far. For today my friends that per-snickety young Hawkeye coach who wanted my 8MM video camera was the subject of Kansas Athletic Director Lou Perkins.
My congratulations go out to the new Kansas Jayhawk Head Coach Bonnie Henrickson.
Yes, the same fiesty Bonnie Henrickson who tried to take my camera so long ago. And no I'm still not giving it up!
Like Paul Harvey so eloquently says:
Now...you know....the...rest...of...the...story
