View Full Version : ISU - KSU
Blazing start. 4 minutes in and ISU is up 14-11. ISU has 4 threes already.
Make that 5. ISU is up 21-13. Wilson has 3 of ISU's 5 threes.
make that 6. ISU up 27-15. Wilson with 12 already. ISU 6-7 on threes.
7:02 left in the first half, and ISU has gone cold. ISU's lead is down to 31-25.

What a game! 47-41 ISU at the half.
ISU had a 6-0 run in the last 45 seconds to pull up 47-41 at the half.
Ohlde is unfortunately winning the battle of the posts, with 20 points at the half. Welle has only 6 points on 3-8 shooting. Fouls are not a big factor with 4 on each team.
Lindsey Wilson leads ISU with 16 at the half. She is 6-8 (3-4 threes). Tracy Gahan has 10. Koehn has 9 (on 3 threes). It sounds like a very exciting game so far.

Wow! What a great game....I may have a nervous breakdown before it is over. With TX losing today, we could pick up a little ground with a win.
I am trying to do my taxes while I listen...probably not a good idea! I think I may have claimed Lindsey Wilson as a dependent on my return!
GO CLONES!
65-55 ISU leads with 11:30 left. The pace of the game is still up there but neither team is playing quite as well. Welle has stepped her offense up a bit and already has a double-double.
Just under 8 minutes to go. ISU up 72-60. The big three have been joined by Mary Cofield, who has 14 points. KSU has played 9 players, a far cry from the 6 that played @ISU (with the lone reserve playing 1 minute).

Like the KState people chanting "BullS***" near the ISU radio announcers. Ah, there's a few in every crowd. Too bad the few chose to sit where they did.
This is a great game by both teams. ISU is up 10 with 4 minutes left.

This is going to kill me....Welle fouls out. It's going to be a long three minutes if we are going to pull this one out.
Welle just fouled out on an away-from-the-ball offensive foul with 3:17 left.

What a tremendous, tremendous win! I know that Bill Fennelly says that there is no such thing as a "must" win, but this was pretty close. Big difference in 5-5 and 4-6 in this conference.
Is this a GREAT conference or what????? http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif K-State is going to be causing Bill Fennelly headaches for many years to come!

KSU scored only two points in the final 3 minutes when Welle had fouled out.
cycofan, here is a little evidence about how good the conference is this year...
With most every team having played at least 9 games of a 16 game schedule, the Nebraska Cornhuskers still appear to have a chance, although mathematically remote, to win the Big 12 Conference championship - outright!
They are in 11th place right now!

Great win for the cyclones and Oklahoma http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif . So what did Welle's numbers end up (for Hoopla!'s sake)?

Preliminary boxscore:
Welle ended at 9-19 20 points, 14 rebounds, 0 assists, 0 steals, 2 blocks, 6 to. That adds up to 20 Hoopla points.
Wilson had 8-12 shooting for 25 points. 1 reb, 2 ast, 1 blk, 1 st, 1 to. 25 hoopla points.
Gahan had 8-11 shooting for 21 points. 11 reb, 8 ast, 7 to (uncharacteristic for her), 30 hoopla points.
Paustian had 1-4 FG for 5 points. 2 reb, 6 ast, 2 blk, 1 st 0 to. 13 hoopla points.

It took a long time for us to get out of the parking lot tonight. I think there was some sort of an unusual problem and we did hear sirens. We did not move at all for at lest 20 minutes. So we were late getting home.
This was a very tough game for the Wildcats. I think it gave more evidence of three facts. 1. ISU is a very fine team. 2. Bill Fennelly is a very good coach. 3. The Wildcats did indeed finally run out of gas in a game.
In the first half Nicole Ohlde did indeed have Angie Welle's number. Welle could do nothing with her on either end of the floor. In the second half coach patterson adjusted her defense in order to adjust to what was working for ISU. Brie Madden and Amy Dutmer were both tried in the low post to guard Welle while Ohlde was moved out front on defense. Ohlde may be able to guard Welle but both Madden and Dutmer were in over their heads. Welle dominated them as bad as she was dominated by Ohlde. IMO the extra energy Nicole used up outside on top of the already draining week they had took the legs out from under her a bit in the second half. She did not get as much elevation when shooting and just generally was off.
Angie Welle is a great player and when she got loose she showed her skill and effectivness. Linsey Wilson just killed us all game long. You can see her offense in the box score but you have to look in our guards box scores for the rest of the story. She played first rate defense all night.
Congrats to the Cyclones and Coach Fennelly. They earned a very good win and played with the class you expect from ISU. Congrats also to the Wildcats. They never fell off in effort but there was just not enough left in the tank. They were often just a little late or off kilter in defense and we gave up too many easy points. The six we gave up at the end of the first half after the score was tied at 41 were just devastating.
KSUron, it's unfortunate that the Cats had such a difficult time getting home from their last road game, and everybody runs out of gas.
It isn't in the least coincidental that both KSU and OU lost to the Twister Sisters, because they are capable of beating anybody in the country on any given night. Rest up, and the Sooners will see if we can figure out how to get a win at your place in about 10 days or so. I promise you I won't bet the farm on that one.
BTW, did you know that (at least as recently as earlier today) the Huskers still had a mathematical possibility of winning the Big 12 outright? And they are in 11th place.
Just trying to console you on what must have been a tough loss. We felt pretty much the same way a couple of weeks ago.

I understand what you are saying YCN. Yes, tough conference. But most teams have played 9 games so far. So even a 1-8 team is mathematically still in the running for conference championship with a team that is 8-1. That' just the math side of things, irregardless of how good the two teams are.
It's still all about the Top 7 in this conference. OSU, MU, and NU are fighting for chances at the WNIT.
What I find interesting is that none of the Top 7 are falling behind any of the others. Colorado falls down in the polls after an 0-3 start, but climb right back into the Top 15 with 6 straight wins. There's a constant turnover here. Texas starts great, but now they have faltered a little bit. Iowa State was looking like they may fold up, but then win at home over OU and now over KSU. That keeps them firmly in the Top 15 - really Top 10. So no team out of the Top 7 has fallen far from the Top 15 - that's great!

Thanks YCN. If you would have told me before the Tech game that KSU would go 2 and 1 over the next three games I would have gladly taken it. Texas Tech, Texas on the road and Iowa State at home was going to be a real challenge. Considering what the K-State players and coaches have done, us KSU fans have no right to be upset. This is one heck of a conference and not many people are going to sweep ISU for the year.

KSURon, thanks for your input on the game. It's always nice to hear from someone who saw it. I wanted to reply regarding Lindsey Wilson. Angie Welle gets almost ALL of the press for this team, but I am here to tell you that without Lindsey Wilson, they don't win a single game. Even if she doesn't have the line like she did last night, she runs the show. Bill Fennelly has been quoted as saying that she "drives the car....knows when to push it and when to slow it up." The biggest thing is that she is SO competitive. She makes the team a little "meaner" (in a good way). http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif Glad to hear that you noticed how important she is too!
Sounded like a great game in a great atmosphere. Good luck the rest of the way!

So what is the status of Junod?// Is she or will be be able to do her thing, without re-injuring her knee. If so, ISU will have the chance to return to their normal self.
Even if she comes back, the chemistry and rotation issues will likely cause some problems for a few games. Wish her the best.
OH, and thanks again to ISU for helping the Sooners, even though it hurts them as much a SWOK34 in getting behind them.

She could be back as early as the game next Saturday against Colorado. I don't expect Junod to see more than 10 minutes per game at the start. I don't see too many chemistry issues since she'd probably be on the court with the big three, with whom she's played with for three years. She'll probably have as much chemistry as any of the freshmen on the team. ISU doesn't have anything even remotely resembling a regular rotation out there. Welle, Wilson, and Gahan play as much as they possibly can, while the other players never know how much action they'll see. Usually, Coach F decides who the other two starters are by how well they practice, and if that lineup plays well he keeps it in as long as it works. ISU's starting lineup of Paustian and Cofield worked well against KSU so the two of them each played 37 minutes, which is very high for them. Since nobody (outside of the big three) expects a given amount of playing time, there shouldn't be too much of an issue with the rotation.
Junod will obviously be rusty. She isn't quite in game shape, and she'll have to play with a brace on her knee. She's not going to turn this team into the #1 team in the nation or anything, but ISU will definitely be better with her than without her. She's one of those kids who can hit threes even when everyone else is missing, and we don't really have that in anyone else.

After watching the Clones for the first time this year, I must say that Wilson is the key to this team. I must agree with Cycofan that while Welle is a GOOD player, Wilson is GREAT. Not only is she extremely important on the offensive end, but that was perhaps the best defensive performance I have seen from any player this year. Her D against Koehn was remarkable. Koehn couldn't even get a decent look at the basket. Good luck to the Clones for the rest of the year, and GO CATS!

Was ISU playing a box-and-one on Koehn? It wouldn't surprise me.

I was at the game last night - What a game - that was Big XII all the way! One name, though that has to be mentioned is Bremer - she came in the towards the end of first half when Welle wasn't able to come up with any defence against Ohlde, and Bremer came in givng up not only 4+ inches (including arm length) but also at least 25 pounds, put a "little of her meanness" skin to skin against Ohlde, and if I remember right - Completely shut her down, or at least took her out of her game for those 2 minutes, and never really did come back, The other thing that happened at the game tonight - the players came out with a certain smile tonight - at introduction, the "Cat" fans held up newspapers and rustled them - it was pretty neat, there was thousands of them!! Angie and the rest of the team couldn't help but chuckle a bit on that one - Yes the Wildcats definately have great fans support (ISU was really outnumbered, but a few scattered red shirts in a Packed Purple House enjoyed a great one!

Glad to read the good words about Wilson. I listened to some of the game last night and thought Wilson was the difference. She's quick, smart, and makes very good decisions with the ball and she's got a lot of different dimensions to her game. Welle does get a lot of press and is obviously a very good player...but take away her favorite shot and she really struggles. Wilson on the other hand finds a way around "challenges" like that and does an excellent job defending the other team's quickest player.
How 'bout Ohlde...only a sophmore and really plays smart. Doesn't foul much, can get herself out of a double team and elevate over them. KSU...I think y'all have had your share of Ohlde...how about sending her on to other teams. I think she's fit right here at Tech.
Video highlights of the game are on the Topeka Capital-Journal website.

Bill Fennelly tried very hard to recruit Nicole and Iowa State was among the last, if not the last other school she crosssed off her list. If she had gone anywhere else it probably would have been ISU. Is that a scary thought or what?

Btw, Thanks for all the nice comments.
We would like to keep Nicole Ohlde here but it would almost be worth loaning her to another Big XII team if we could get an NC out of it. Maybe we will just have to try to gang-up on them this year with a wave of B-12 teams. If that does not work, maybe we should go for a B-12 all-star team next year.

Hey, cctiger, just wanted to say welcome, haven't seen you around before. KSUron, you're welcome for all the nice comments....we all for the most part are complimentary of all Big Twelve teams because we have been overlooked for so long, not to mention teams like K-State really deserve better recognition. Women's sports are grossly underrated in this country, but I think it's fans like we have in the Big Twelve that are helping break the "women's athletic glass ceiling."
