Texas up 22-5 as I write this and I expect at anytime ESPN will take us to someother game or contest of some sort.

You are correct. Just lost the Texas game to Ole Miss and Villanova! http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/frown.gif

wow, it's great to see both Jamie Carey and Heather Schrieber get back on track offensively.

I think it's safe to say Texas advances to the second round they're up at the half 55-22.

Dominance.
But don't you know, Texas doesn't deserve a #1 seed, Purdue does! And UConn too! http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

...but we got rather sloppy in the 2nd, on both ends of the floor. Jody was rotating players, trying out some different plays and sets, etc.
Stacy did not have a good game as Southern was collapsing in on her quite a bit. Tiffany Jackson, however, ran wild, and Jamie was very productive for the time she spent on the floor.
Kala got plenty of minutes and the guards got a good workout from the Jaguars speedy perimeter players.
Everyone got to play in the 2nd, and all but Tamra Cobbins scored. Jody Bell got a wild ovation from the whole barn when she came in, and they went nuts when she scored on a transition layup - and also when Kalee Carey blocked a shot.
Most of the night felt like November rather than March, except for the big and enthusiastic crowd, and of course, the REAL attraction: The Southern University Band. They were great fun and the whole crowd enjoyed them very much, to the point of standing respectfully silent for Southern's alma mater after the game. Too bad they didn't get to do a halftime show on the court. I wish our band was that cool...but I have to wonder if Southern's teams ever get tired of the marching band showing them up... http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif

Of course not, because they know the deal.
In the Southwestern Athletic Conference, athletics are for those who can't make the band. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif

Southern gave it a good effort, but its like all the 15 and 16 seeds, you are playing against a team that is a couple of tiers up. Team skill and organization that is a couple of tiers up.
One thing about the Southern kids, they didn't quit. The just didn't hav ethe size and fundamental skill to carry the fight.
With the growth of the game, the time is coming when there will be Hampton-Iowa State-type upsets in the tournament.

Good review, JohnHenry. It was a fun game to watch, and my fingernails and cuticles are still intact, a welcome change from the five or six previous games. The one thing I would add is that when the Southern post player fouled out, she received a standing ovation from the crowd. My mother watched on tv and said the commentators mentioned it and were surprised. I'm pleased the Longhorn crowd can show that kind of cordiality, although I suspect our Big 12 siblings have not been on the receiving end of it too often.

The Texas crowd is always cordial to the scrappy but outmanned teams we beat up on in non-conference season. The crowd seemed to almost adopt Fredreika there for awhile. She had some fight and some personality, and she worked pretty hard for such a big gal.
I thought her last foul was a lame call, btw. The officials made a number of lame and unnecessary calls late in the game, which isn't unusual, but it seemed strange considering there was 35-point spread. Let 'em play and get it over with, for heaven's sake.

...AND, Jody Condradt called her over and congratulated her on a good effort. At first, I didn't know what to think? Jody revealed what she said to her in the post game press conference. That young lady (a Freshman) lit up like a Christmas tree and you would have never known she had just fouled out and her team was down by 30+. Then she sits down and looks up and sees she's on the big TV... http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif Jody also said she doesn't understand how she got out of the state of Texas (Beaumont). (The newspaper said she grew up a Tech fan.)
In addition to the Southern Band (who played a BEAUTIFUL and slightly unique rendition of the Star Spangled Banner),I have to give special props to one of the Southern male cheerleaders. He did some tumbles that I've never seen a cheerleader do and just kept going and going and going the full length of the court. He too, got some standing O's from the Texas crowd along with some oohs and ahhs. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/biggrin.gif Jody even mentioned the Southern Band and cheerleaders in the postgame press conference and what they had added to the NCAA atmosphere. (It was unanimous in the section I was sitting in that they were more than welcome to come back on Tuesday and entertatin.)
It was a great evening to be at the FEC...but I am bummed I had to leave after the game and drive back to Dallas (work tomorrow) instead of checking out our next opponent (Mich. State).

I had a conversation early this morning with my co-worker, who's wife is a graduate of Southern University. My co-worker confirms Chipper's post. Following a long tradition, the band is the pride and joy of the school - not the football team or the basketball team. He talked about how, in the past, at football games between Southern University and Grambling, the half-time show was its own (unofficial) competition.

WOW I missed something! We got bored with Texas (not that TEXAS is boring - grin) and were switching Full Court channels. I have always loved the Grambling band and would have stuck around had I known what to expect.

Absolutely! I used to always watch Southern and Grambling as much as for the half time show as the football game. Unfortunately, now that our "networks" rarely show much of the half time show, we rarely get that treat. When BET carries some of the games, they do show half-time.
I like the Southern coach and she'll do some good things for that team. I like the way the team hung in there and played with heart.
