Colorado defeated Iowa 92-83 Sunday afternoon in Boulder behind 7-7 shooting from the floor from senior center Britt Hartshorn. The victory moves the Buffs to 6-2 on the season while Iowa is now 4-2.
After a the teams traded leads early on the Buffs were able to squeeze out a three point lead at the half, 43-40. The Buffs would never lose the lead, but they weren't able to deliver the knockout punch either.
The game proved to be one of the more entertaining of the season as both teams weren't shy about running or putting up the trey. Colorado was 5-16 from three point range while Iowa was 9-27.
Iowa proved to be the more assertive team on the boards as they beat the Buffs to the caroms 43-31. It's the second straight game that CU has been out-hussled on the glass. However, unlike the CSU game the Buffs were able to take advantage of Iowa's 15 turnovers as well as getting a solid game from Hartshorn. Between Hartshorn's perfect effort from the floor and a transition game the Buffs were able to hit 53.7% from the floor to Iowa's 47.8%.
Colorado struggled to contain Iowa's Lindsey Meder who lit them up for 21 points hitting 5-14 three pointers. She was a major reason the Buffs weren't able to pull away. Also producing well for the Hawkeyes were Jerica Watson with 15 points and 11 rebounds -- the Buffs really had trouble with her on the boards in the first half - Jennie Lillis with 18 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists and Lindsey Magner with 14 points.
For perhaps the first time this season the Buffs got some point production from the 4 spot with starter Randie Wirt ( 4 pts) and her backup Sabrina Scott (15) combining for 19 points. They were frequently given open looks from 12 feet and out. This due to Iowa's concentration on shutting down the Buffs' post game.
Colorado stays at home to face Air Force on Wednesday night while Iowa return home to host the Gazette Hawkeye Challenge beginning Friday night.
