Mideast
Duke is a wonderful team, the strongest of all on paper because of the perfect synergy between its two great senior stars, 5-foot-11 guard Alana Beard and 6-4 forward Iciss Tillis. The Blue Devils have tackled a demanding schedule outside their own, rather ordinary conference. Duke plays with a pace that sometimes can overwhelm even a canny opponent, as it did UConn late in one regular-season game.

That should be more than enough to win this region, based on a very simple rule of thumb: When in doubt, pick against any team west of the Mississippi. It’s been a decade since one of ’dem Westerners captured the NCAA Tournament, and it isn’t likely to happen again this year. So despite the hype over No. 2 Kansas State and No. 4 Texas Tech, ignore them. Instead, look for a Duke-Boston College final in this region, and go with the Blue Devils in an engrossing battle.

The Eagles are always dangerous with their arsenal of pure shooters — guards Jessalyn Deveny, Clare Droesch and Amber Jacobs. But down low, in Tillis territory, they pay a price.

No mention of Louisiana Tech which seems to be the choice of the BBS snobs to face Duke in the Sweet 16.

Baylor and Oklahoma are invisible to this writer too. Guess he is applying his *rule of thumb*.
