Hope some of you loyalists or other experts put up some keys to players or events to sway the outcome. Myself, gotta hope the Horns put another chink in the KSU psyche.
IMO, keys for Texas will be perimeter defense and Stephens getting Ohlde in foul trouble and not vice versa. As us OU folks saw last night, the road in this league can be a hard place to kick it up a notch.

A Longhorn loyalist response.
Texas Defense
Ohlde – She is probably going to get her points. She is tall, mobile, and has a variety of shots. I think Texas will front Ohlde (Tech did not) and make it harder both for the team to pass in to Ohlde and for Ohlde to pass back out to the open shooter. Didn't Ohlde have 10 assists on Sunday?
Perimeter Defense - With Bowers and Schreiber at the 2/3 instead of Dillard and Woods, Texas has gained scoring potential and height but given up some defensive quickness and experience. If the KSU offense starts getting completely out of hand, Bowers or Schreiber will have to come out in favor or Asha Hill or Tai Dillard. Against Baylor, Hill came in for much of the second half when Texas made its run.
Texas Offense
I guess we’ll have to see what kind of defense KSU plays. I like the flexibility Texas has on offense this year. I'd like to see the team shoot a little more from the outside than they have been lately. People are starting to crowd in on Stephens again. We have outside shooters in Sare, Schreiber, White, and Bowers. Larkin has been shooting and needs to continue to do so. Kaira White is the most aggressive player taking the ball to the basket.

Oh yes WE DID! Tech played behind her and in front of her when playing behind her didn't work (got a little physical and refs called some fouls so Tech had to back off a little). Ohlde is just a very versatile player. When Tech fronted her, her teamates just lobbed in a pass and she was able to get a foul on one occasion. I don't think UT can stop Ohlde if her shot is on again tonight.
As for UT offense...KSU will probably open up in some kind of zone and force the horns to take the longer shots to force them out of it. Of course if ut isn't making the outside shots, then the zone will be more of a weapon and Stephen won't be able to get the entry pass.
I still think this is KSU's game to lose. You can say all you want about "they have already proved themselves and they have nothing to lose when they go out cause they have already exceed expectations," but KSU has now proved themselves and must keep on winnin' to contend for the conference title.

Well my assesment is somewhat uninformed as far as Texas is concerned. The only Texas game I saw last year was at Bramlage. My guess is that game has very little to do with the one that is coming tonight.
Most evryone is pretty aware of Ohlde. She will take whatever the game allows. In most cases that means she will score some inside and play pretty decent defense. Her shot blocking and just general assertiveness is better this year than last and continues to improve. It is not unheard of but most unlikely that she will get into foul trouble. I have seen her play a lot of games in high school and college and she almost never gets in foul trouble. Other people do get in foul trouble guarding her but seldom the other way around.
Kendra Wecker will be aggressive on both ends of the floor and is much more likely to have a foul problem. She will either shoot from outside, pass or drive to the basket and she does all three well. Of those I'd say she most prefers driving to the basket. Of all the K-State players with the possible exception of Andrea Armstrong (a power forward you won't see too much) she is the most comfortable with contact. She has the skills to be a finess player but her attitude and style is more "linebacker". Guarding her requires quickness, toughness and tenacity. She is a little short for power forward at 5'11.
Megan Mahoney is fairly quick and skillfull for a 6 footer. she plays a wing position and will sometimes guard the opposing team's point or best shooter. She does not shoot a lot but has our best three point percentage.
I'm not sure if Coach Patterson will start Chelsea Domenico at the point or not. If she does, Laurie Koehn will start at the 2 spot. She leads the nation in threes (80) and shoots over 40% from three-land as does Kristin Rethman. Laurie is a gym-rat who has incredible skills and is very toughminded. She also likes to drive but does not hesitate to shoot from anywhere. When asked why she shot (and hit) from so far out in a game she responded by saying "I don't know how far out I am. If I see a shot I take it".
Kristin tends to be more of a shooter but she seems to me to have developed more movement and agressiveness in her game this year. Perhaps it was always there but could not be expressed in last years offense.
If Chelsea does not start Laurie will start at point and Kristin at the 2 although Coach Patterson will mix and match her guards in various ways. Lately we will see Kristin or even Megan run the point at times. In any case you will see a lot of Kristin wether she starts or not.
Chelsea Domenico has outstanding skills but her stats are lousy and her game has not developed because she has missed a great deal of the season due to injury and has played hurt some of the time. To me she is very much a work in progress who may or may not get good minutes in this game. If she does, look for lots of ballhandling and playmaking skill but not a great deal of scoring (yet).
Coach Patterson will play her zone whenever she can but will also shift into man or variations this year. If outside shooters are hitting she will adjust to try to stop it. Her zone is more agressive than last year because the players are quicker and more able to make adjustments. At times we have been burned by outside shooters and I surmise she is continuing to expiriment with ways to defend shooters. Between Lindsey Wilson, Nighingale, Lambert and Perkins we have been getting some practice. Sheesh! what a conference.
I expect based on what I know about Texas that Wecker may be a real test for the UT defense. If we get good spacing it will be a challenge for Texas to control Ohlde, Wecker and Mahoney up front. If they help out it may open up the outside shooters. Fronting Ohlde can work but she is better at getting separation and taking lobs this year. She is 6'4 and has long arms and a good reach so fronting has its dangers and pretty much requires help defense in my view.
K-State will run when they get the chance. I would not expect a lot of full court pressure defense from K-State. We often throw in a little, but tend not to be persistent or agressive with it. I whish I could tell you more about how we will match up but I don't really know how that will go. Let the game begin!

Great game...as crazy as it sounds, I was cheerin' for the cats. Well, maybe it wasn't crazy cause I think KSU and OU have pretty much isolated themselves from the rest of the Big XII so I am looking for Tech to battle with UT, Baylor, and CU.

I was rooting for KSU for the same reason. ISU won't catch KSU at this point, but ISU isn't that far behind Texas record-wise.
Also, when in doubt root for the North! (I'm sure this wasn't one of your reasons. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif )

Congrats...KSU on a great night. I was listening to the Tech women's game on the radio and this game on the Net...and watching the Tech men lose to Nebraska on the screen. Too much to absorb.
A great game...KSU continues to show their poise and handle the pressure of being a Top 10 team. I'm a believer and I'll be pulling for KSU to win the Big 12!
So KSUron...is the snow coming down up there?

Wow, I just checked in at the end of the 2nd OT. Have to say, I was pulling for K-State (I just can't bring myself to pull for Texas in anything), though it might help OU's case if K-State lost one. What big games by lots of young players--Ohdle, Stephens, Koehn, and Wecker.

I heard the radio announcer say that the Texas men would be stuck in Manhattan and the Kansas State women stuck in Austin...
congrats.........great games for both mens and womens teams....
don't know about the men's, but the women's was well the barnburner promised.

The only thing weirder than an Okie rooting for Texas...is a West Texan rooting for Oklahoma...particulary out here in dust bowl land (but it does happen)...course I'm not a Texan so I can root for whoever I feel like rooting for.
But it looks like the conference race is coming down to OU and KSU..who'd have thunk it?
I'd love to be at the OU/KSU game but since Tech's not playing that night, I'll have to listen in. Should be another barnburner.

Has anyone seen a box score from this game yet? Geez!
Just found this...finally info.
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - Laurie Koehn scored 28 points and Nicole Ohlde had 24 points and 11 rebounds Wednesday night to propel ninth-ranked Kansas State to an 80-76 double-overtime victory over No. 14 Texas and Stacy Stephens.
Kansas State (20-2, 8-1 Big 12) reached 20 wins for the first time since the 1989-90 season and got its first victory in Austin to hold on to first place in the conference.
Stephens led Texas (14-5, 6-3) with 33 points and 17 rebounds.
Tied at 73 after the first overtime, a baseline jumper by Kendra Wecker and a turnaround floater in the lane by Ohlde put the Wildcats up 77-73. Wecker finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Texas got within two points on a basket by Stephens and had one last chance to tie. But Heather Schreiber's long jumper missed everything, and Wecker was fouled on the rebound.
The Longhorns were just 1-of-8 shooting from the floor in the final period.
Texas has lost two in a row for the first time this season and has dropped three of its last four.
Koehn hit seven 3-pointers to boost her Big 12-leading total to 87 this season. The Big 12's leading 3-point shooting team finished 11-of-27 from the arc.
A 3-pointer by Texas' Asha Hill tied it 66-66 with 35 seconds left in regulation. Her 3-point attempt at the end of the first extra period rattled off the rim.
um, did i just read that stacy stephens had 33 points and 17 rebounds? wow!

To paraphrase Conradt, 'it was a great basketball game if you don't care who wins'.
There is a reason Koehn has been freshman of the week 3 times. She is my front runner for FOY. When KSU came out with Domenico at the point, I thought that wouldn't last long and it didn't. Even before Domenico came out, it was Koehn bringing the ball up and running the team.
Texas played very good defense. I wasn't unhappy with how the team ran the offense but both Schreiber and Bowers had off nights. KSU has such shooters and uses screens so well.

I must say that was the best bball game I've seen at the Erwin Center since UT lost to TTU in Double Overtime I quess three years ago. Its something special when you lose and you aren't crushed. Kudos for the KSU women. Ohlde just might be national player of the year when she is a senior. The odds are starting to even up on the Horns in the squeakers. Jody's been telling them that that would happen if they didn't learn to put teams away or let teams get to far ahead too early. That second phenomenon didn't happen tonight. Hmmm. KSU just has it right now. Watch out OU. Got to love Big 12 women's basketball. And I enjoyed reading all these post after I had time to relax and absorb things. I'm so glad to get to share your reflections. Hey, let's try to get all four spots in the Final Four in San Antonio!!!!

I just saw the box score. Oh Stacy, just one more free throw, or just had you had your season average. And did you see the rebound margin? Incredible that KSU overcame that. Shooting Shooting Shooting.
We have been treated to some exceptionally exciting basketball games in Austin this year. Two teams left their sweat, tears, hearts and guts on the floor of the drum tonight. Texas played some awesome defense and still Ohlde and Koehn lit it up. Many of Stacy's points came as we tried to go at Ohlde to make her pick up her fifth foul. She played about 15 minutes with 4 fouls. The difference in the game was our lack of offensive execution in the overtime periods and the fact that Ohlde and Wecker did not foul out. Congratulations to the Cats! They are fantastic.

Just got back to Dallas from Austin. What a game. Koehn is AWESOME. Definitely the freshman of the year in the Bix XII. What a devastating loss for our ladies. We just can't seem to do it at the end of games. And quite frankly, I still say Bowers is not a 2 guard. Our guard play has been very inconsistent all year. We do not seem to have much offensive flow. Alisha Sare played very well tonight and her 3 point attempt could have won it at the end of regulation but rattled in and out. We came that close to beating a truly great team. But let me throw this at you. How about Stacy Stephens as the National Player of the Year as a Senior. She DOMINATED. If we could just get some good guard play, we could be a very good team. Kansas State is an extremely well-coached team. Love their movement on offense and the use of the screens. Koehn was unconscious from the 3 point land. Congrats to Kansas State.

With the work ethic Stacy has demonstrated, I wouldn't count her out. But there will still be Perkins and Ohlde in conference not to mention Beard and Taurasi and Mazzante and Nicole Powell and others I've forgotten out of conference. The sophomore class around the country is not too shabby.

What a game! Both teams left everything on the floor last night - and to think that most of the starters for both teams are freshman and sophmores.
One more word on Stacy Stephens - our seats are right abover the tunnel where the team enters and exits the floor. After every game, kids position themselves to high five the team as they come off the court. After 33 points, 17 rebounds but still losing in double ot - Stacy made it a point to high five every kid out there - including those she had to climb around security to get to. Just a wonderful touch at the end of a hard, sad game for horns fans.
KSU - Kudos not only on the level of play last night, but also on the number of fans at the Erwin Center. Way to support a team!

Several of us purple followers have already bought tickets for the game in Lincoln and a home game will surely sell out fast.
