Sorry to start a new thread on this, but.....

Wecker beats out Schreiber and Bowers for this honor IMO. She has been a force to be reckoned with and her overall athletic ability is simply superior. Much more valuable to her team than Schreiber or Bowers.

According to the interactive stats, they are as follows:

..........Points...Rebs...Blocks...Steals...Assist s
Wecker....16.3.....170....34.......10.......60

Schreiber.14.3.....102....9........28.......26

Bowers....8.8......65.....5........12.......11

KSU has played more games than UT.

I saw part of the post-game interview with KMR after Baylor beat Texas and she was very forceful in saying that Steffanie Blackmon should be a FOY candidate. Her words were basically that if she doesn't get at least some votes, its that people don't want to put her there (i.e., political).

If she plays the rest of the way like she did against us Saturday, I'd have to agree. But then I haven't seen the "Cat Kids" in person yet, either.

Hard to pick just one, so here's my All-Frosh First team:

G Dionnah Jackson
G Laurie Koehn
F Heather Schreiber
F Kendra Wecker
P Steffanie Blackmon

Obviously others such as Bowers and Mahoney are contributing mightily as well.

There is always more to a story than stats, but one consideration from our interactive stats could be to look at Hoopla! scores per game or 40 min. They are not perfect but were put together in such a way as to give at least a reasonable measure of a players relative contributions. Hoopla! scores don't measure some things such as defensive skills so we are free to debate this at length. However:

Player________Hoopla! score
Wecker________20.4
Koehn_________16.2
Schreiber_____15.1
Mahoney_______14.9
Robinette_____12.1
S.Blackmon____11.0
Greenwalt_____10.8
Jackson_______10.2
Bowers_________7.1

With all due respect the best competion Kendra Wecker has for FOY is Laurie Koehn. GO CATS! (said the homer) This conference sure is blessed with some great players including all these freshmen.

We really aren't going to be able to more accurately compare freshman until they all start for their team in the next couple of years. Wecker and Koehn have a big advantage over other freshman because they start and play a lot of minutes.

If Mulkey-Robertson actually thinks Blackmon should be getting some measurable votes for FOY, I think she's smoking something. Blackmon doesn't even start for Baylor and clearly Wecker and company in Manhattan have 2 and maybe 3 candidates producing more for that team than Blackmon is for the Bears.

Wecker, Koehn, and Schreiber are the top 3 candidates in my opinion. If Bowers would have been doing all year long what she is doing now, then it would be a 4-person race.

Hey Bevo, glad you put Jackson on your team.
So I'm a homer, but I also really believe she's one of those players whose stats may not show the big numbers like Wecker, Koehn, she is really a difference maker out there. And she's lightning quick. Her defense is awesome. She's proof that the stats don't tell the whole story.
Having said that, I really don't expect her to make the All-Freshman team. THere are just to many other freshmen putting up big numbers.

Schooner, I agree with you that Blackmon is certainly not at the level of a few other freshmen players. Although Baylor is my team, I could not put her above number 3 or 4 in the freshman class. Coach Kim was thrilled that Blackmon put up a short jumper that just may have won the game for them in Austin. Her emotions were running a little high at the time her comments were made. She would be starting Blackmon if she were that good. She will be a dominant player in a couple of years however.

Yes, I agree and exactly my point. Blackmon could turn out to be just as good as Wecker or Ohlde in a couple of years - just don't know. For now moments of brilliance is not the same or as good as a consistently very good player like Wecker.
