I too am tired of waiting for some info on this million fan march thing. So, lets just do it ourselves. Lets go to the Schedules/Results section of each team's official page and go through each boxscore and use the attendance recorded there. Lets do the math ourselves.
So as not to duplicate efforts, maybe we should just get one volunteer per team. First come/first assigned I say. I volunteer to calculate Oklahoma's. I'll have it up by tomorrow afternoon. If someone else wants to count OU's too, so be it. I'm just saying I'll also count it.
Anybody else volunteer to count up their team's?

OK, K-State has made it easy. In the game notes after the game tonight (attendance 8,823) the total for the year is now 51,899. That's a new season home attendance record. The prior high was in 99-2000 with a season total of 49,068.
We still have home games v TTU (sold out), ISU (also sold out) and OU and MU. The OU & MU games are Wednesday games and are not sold out. Given what has happened so far this year it would not be unreasonable to expect crowds of at least 8,000 each for those games. If we don't go completly in the tank or have bad weather I expect between 92,000 to 98,000 fans for KSU regular season home games this year. That's counting chickens not yet hatched of course, but sales are already good for those games.
The record of 51,899 is what's in the bank now.

We have 5 regular home games left. The highest attendance to date was 8,340 for the game against Texas Tech. I don't expect to see that number again during the regular season but we may have smaller spikes for games against OU, Texas A&M, and to a lesser extent Baylor. Attendance tends to be higher for traditional foes and highly ranked teams. Attendance for games against other in-state schools is boosted by fans from those schools.

I don't suppose we're going to be hearing from any Aggie fans in the near future. From the Texas A&M website:
ATTENDANCE SUMMARY GAMES TOTALS AVG/GAME
HOME.................... 9 13654 1517
With 6 home games left, projected total attendance based on the current average is a whopping 22,756.
The total could be a little higher because of who will be visiting College Station. Remaining home games include: 1/26 OKLAHOMA, 1/30 TEXAS TECH, 2/2 TEXAS, 2/13 BAYLOR, 2/16 MISSOURI, and 2/27 OKLAHOMA STATE. Texas Tech fans travel. I expect at least several hundred Texas fans to travel to College Station and I think Baylor fans might also go to the game at A&M.
The attendance at UT is down this year, which is strange given that we are having the best year in awhile. At the games I've attended, there doesn't seem to be less people. I don't know if the new arena configuration makes it seem that way or if the counting method has changed (actual bodies vs. tickets sold).
Would like to see another 8,000+ for the Baylor game this Saturday.
ISU's average is pulled down a bit by the two coaches vs. cancer games and the winter break games. I'd expect ISU to average at least 11,000 fans in the last four home games, especially since two of them are on Saturdays. This would put ISU's total around 145,000.
Also, there should be a lot of ISU fans @ Nebraska Saturday. The ISU men play @ Nebraska that evening, and I know a lot of ISU fans plan to go to the doubleheader (which isn't much of a doubleheader since there are several hours between the end of the WBB 1PM game and the MBB 8PM game).
Don't forget to factor in the Big XII tournament attendance. There were 31,831 last year, and KSU's rise (both in results and attendance) might bring a lot of purple to Memorial, so that may go up by a couple thousand.

2/2/2002 Kansas
2/5/2002 Baylor
2/9/2002 Texas A&M
2/16/2002 Nebraska
2/27/2002 Texas Tech
</pre>
Oklahoma has had a combined attendance of 38,589 through 7 games for a 5513 average.
I'm going to guess 7000 for Kansas on a Saturday. Same for Texas A&M and Nebraska which are on Saturdays. I'll go for 8000 for Baylor on a Tuesday. And I'll go 10,000 for Texas Tech - senior night. Wouldn't be surprised to see a sellout of 11,000+.
So, OU will likely see another 39,000 in attendance. I'll round up to around 78,000 in final attendance which equates to a 6500 per game average.

I know it included the Big 12 Tournament. Gotta assume it will include NCAA Tournament. The only goal is to see how many fans watch Big 12 basketball. If they were doing an intercomparison with other leagues, then they would have to consider how to deal with things like both post-season tourneys. Not to mention not every league has 16 conference games.
So lets assume NCAA games hosted do count.
Might as well give OU two sellouts of say, 11,500 each.

I'll ask how many tickets we sold the last time ut hosted and see if I can come up with a number. I noticed on the big 12 women's basket ball press release that they are listing the average attendance to wbb games and has Texas at 5049.
Within the spirit of the thread, I would like to let others on this board know what I have been spending a whole lot of time on lately, and where I stand at this point.
I have been collecting the official box scores of the games of every team in the conference, for every game that they have played this year. I am trying to collect the officially submitted box scores from both teams in each game, but so far I haven't even made it through the Big 12 schools, and expect the non-conference opponents' official boxes to be even harder to collect.
With each box score I'm associating a hyperlink to the page where the box was taken, and I plan to archive those pages, if I can get permission from the schools involved.
Right now my estimate is that I am about 35% complete on my project, which I only started a couple of weeks ago. You have no idea how much work is involved in this. Basically, for now, I am just copying and pasting the official boxes, since they are submitted to the NCAA as plain text anyway.
I have a lot of ideas of what can be done with this information in terms of recording the history of the Big 12 Conference, but I just don't know if the task is completely do-able by just one person. Also, it would be really helpful to also associate various write-ups by sports journalists on all these games.
Once again, that part of the equation is dictated by whether or not I can get permission to get the stories along with the boxes. I can't imagine anyone trying to hinder the history of this sport by denying permission to archive the history of the game, but you just never know.
Anyway, if anyone has any comments or suggestions regarding this project, I'm more than willing to listen to them. BTW, there are official boxes that I have found that contain errors, including the actual date of the game that was played.
I hate history.

I don't see why this would be a problem. If this is public domain knowledge out on the internet - then you should be able to archive (repackage it) - just can't sell it. I was afraid when I started using logos and pics on this site about copyright infringement. But I was basically told that as long as I'm not selling the information to anyone then I'm doing no wrong.

Have you found boxes from Big 12 schools that contain errors? How do the "official" boxes differ from what the official university web sites put on their web pages?
HoopScoop, I just take text from pages that is in plain text, that say "Official basketball box score".
I am clueless beyond that. The schools could post phony "official" boxes for all I know, and I wouldn't know otherwise. It WOULD be nice if the NCAA allowed the public access to the actual official boxes that they receive. If you know a way to access those, I'd love to hear about it.
Also, maybe less than half a dozen scores that I have collected so far are definitely not official, but I figure I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. OSU and CU seem to be the worst violators regarding the posting of official boxes.

Looks like the Big 12 has drawn 499,319 fans so far. Next game should send the conference over the half million mark. I projected about 35000 for the Big XII Tournament - mred, I didn't know if you were using last year's numbers or not. I then used mred's projections on hosting. I gave Texas only 14000 if they hosted. Probably could be more. But even if the Big 12 were to have 7 teams hosting, the conference would just barely surpass the million mark.
How many teams end up hosting should be interesting to find out. It's not like the 7 ranked teams of the Big 12 are all at the bottom of the Top 25. In fact, all but 1 is in the Top 15. So who knows? Gotta think that the selection committee wouldn't let that many from once conference host though. If the Big 12 got 5 hosts and ISU got to the regional and played at Ames - the million mark might just be possible.

schooner, am I mistaken here? I didn't think that a team could host a regional and also play in it...
Am I wrong?
Yup, that is exactly what they look like to me too.
What is interesting is to see the individual styles of the official boxes depending on the school, for instance, ISU loves to put "comments" into their scores regarding milestones reached by players in their program, and KU seems almost obsessive about posting the most officially correct "Official box scores" of any Big 12 school.

I've heard it stated several times that ISU has the opportunity to play at home up until the Final Four. I guess there is no official rule on where a team cannot play.

Quite the opposite, in fact. ISU is guaranteed to play its third and fourth round games in Ames. Even if ISU doesn't host a subregional, they will play in Ames if they make the Sweet 16.
