DALLAS -- Texas Tech’s Amber Tarr was named Big 12 Women’s Basketball Player of the Week and Texas’ Kala Bowers earned Big 12 Rookie of the Week in a vote of a media panel for games played from Jan. 14-20.
Tarr, a 6-0 senior guard, helped lead Texas Tech to victories over two top 15 teams last week. She averaged 18 points and four rebounds while shooting 60 percent from the field, 54.5 percent from the three-point line and 66.7 percent from the charity stripe. Against No. 11/13 Baylor, Tarr scored 15 points and added six rebounds, a season-high five assists and a career-high four steals as she shot 58.3 percent from the field. At No. 9/14 Iowa State, the Ozona, Texas, native led Tech with 21 points, connecting on 5-of-8 shot attempts, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. Tarr shot 62.5 percent from the field, 71.4 percent from three-point range and 66.7 percent from the free throw line. Her season-high five three pointers helped Tech set a school record for most three-pointers in a game with 12.
Making her debut in a Texas uniform in her home state of Oklahoma last week, Bowers collected back-to-back career-highs of 15 points (vs. Oklahoma State) and a career-high tying six rebounds, and then topped that with 17 points against No. 3/2 Oklahoma, helping UT to a 1-1 week. The 6-2 freshman forward/guard powered UT’s attack against OSU, collecting seven points and five rebounds in the first half to pace UT to its 37-30 lead. Against Oklahoma, Bowers was 7-for-8 from the field against the Sooners and also collected two steals. The Woodward, Okla., native jumped into the starting lineup as Texas began Big 12 play and is now fourth on the team in overall scoring (7.6 ppg). She has been in double-figure scoring seven times.
Amber Tarr definately deserved this one. She has picked up her game in Conference play and has played her heart out every game. Go Lady Raiders!!
