View Full Version : OU at ISU

From the picks of the week, it looks like the Big 12 fans are kind of split. This should be the game of the week. I picked ISU, but they are going to have to come out and play ball from the first jump and continue for 40 minutes. They cannot afford to get down against a team the caliber of OU. The cyclones are going to have to give 110%, hit their shots, hang on to the ball, and rebound. Hanging on to the ball has been a major problem recently. I hope the coach can find the can of "stick-'em". I don't think they are ready to lose 3 games in a row, nor are they ready to lose a second consecutive game at home. Just my opinion, but I am kind of biased.

I posted the Daily Oklahoman article on the front page.....I noticed in the stats that it might be a game of strong guard play.....didn't Gahan play forward last year?....she's listed as a guard.
Sherri isn't allowing that loss at Texas A & M to fool her about this ISU team......her comment when hearing about ISU's loss:
"I don't know what's happened. I'd have to watch the Texas A & M game film to really believe that score." She also said that she wished TAMU would have gone about their typical business rather than awaken the Cyclones.
I think it will be a really, really good game......I'm with Coale, the TAMU loss means nothing today. Iowa State is the one team that a Sherri Coale-led squad has never beaten. And we really, really owe you one from that last second buzzer beater after OU came from 20 down. I look for OU to hit the court hard and fast, much similiar to the philosophy of the Texas Tech game.
We do get to see the TV broadcast here in parts of Oklahoma...for
Norman and Oklahoma City fans....it's on Cox Channel 9 (Sooner Sports Network).....I'm not sure how that station broadcasts to the rest of Oklahoma.
Go http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/ou.gif Beat http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/isu.gif finally!!!!
Gahan started at power forward last season. This season, is starting at shooting guard and backing Lindsey at the point. She still plays significant time at every position except center.
Ball handling, speed, & defense ... OU by 15. But biased, I think I've become an OU fan.

I think 15 is a bit over the top,,,,could happen though. The Sooner Women are full of confidence and swagger but throw ISU's recent decline out the window. they will come to play.
Without going through all the possible matchups, just think OU has more ammo, weapons, speed and flow right now.

Oklahoma is by far the best team ISU has played this season. The Sooners have shooters, rebounders and defenders and have more confidence than a troop of 2-year-olds. They start four seniors who have a wealth of experience and a fine junior forward.
"They are really good," Fennelly said. "They are the kind of team, and I don't say this much, that I would pay to go watch them play. They have a little swagger to them. They've got this feeling that they're, not invincible, but probably pretty close. I don't think they are going to get challenged in our league over 16 games."
Here's an excerpt from an article in the Ames Tribune today, I'll post the entire link on the front page......great article; goes more indepth as to the starters strengths and weakness's a whole lot more than what the Oklahoma paper ever thinks of doing.
p.s. I wish we had a Susan Harmon writing for OU, always have felt that way.

The breeze and wind in Ames is beginning to pick up speed. Time will tell as to whether it is due to a stengthening Cyclone or just the team speed and quickness of the Sooner Women in town.

Its not the win that astounds me. Its that OU was never really in it after ISU made its run after the half.

82 - 66 ISU. Incredible!
Wow! Welle with 28 points (10-11 shooting, missing only a three), 9 rebounds, 3 assists. Gahan had 25 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists.

Shows you what I know. I laid off of Welle and had Dionnah Jackson in my Hoopla! starting five.
Wow, indeed. That must have been one angry, motivated bunch of Cyclones. I'm glad that their Texas tour is over!

uh oh, Bevo.........not a good thing for Texas to come to town. I have never seen Sherri Coale so angry at her team........she said besides "Neisha" and "Caton" (who sat on the bench and can't score from the bench)........no one else showed up.
Man, talk about lack of effort. Can kind of understand Roz going cold as she tends to do that and after playing the kind of game at Baylor that she did........um, calling Stacey Dales, calling Stacey Dales..........All-American, Big 12 player of the year COULD show up one of these times.
I knew there previous 2nd half come out of the locker room dead were gonna bit 'em in the butt and it did. Terrible defense, no offense, can't win ballgames like that.
You can bet they will play 180 degree differently on Saturday after Sherri gets finished with them the next 3 days.

Well, I guess I'm glad I had car trouble and was watching my boyfriend fix my car during the game and unable to listen on the radio.
Why did OU get the technical in the first half?
It's hard to beat a team who shoots 70+% in a half--but was OU's defense that lacking, or were the Cyclones just hitting on all cylinders? Geez. I was worried about this game though...not a good time to catch ISU. Nor will it be a good time for Texas to catch OU Saturday (and I'm finally making it to Norman for the game, yippee)!

a great OU team.........they played like dog-do.
Jennifer, in Sherri's own words, no one showed up to play EXCEPT Laneisha and Caton...and Caton sat on the bench a good bit of the second half in foul trouble.
I think Jan Ross got the technical in the first half...they were mighty surprised about it on the OU bench.
Can't win games when you don't play defense and can't shoot the ball. Worst defensive effort ever this year.....weren't stealing, weren't tipping and getting in the passing lanes.....a lot of Welle's points came with Selmon in the game and Caton on the bench, Caton couldn't do much in the last 4 minutes with 4 fouls though.
And, the Cyclones were hitting on all cylinders in the 2nd half; I think they could have thrown the ball from behind the back turned backwards and the thing would have went in the 2nd half...

Can you BELIEVE those zebras!!! Unbelievable they cost us the game like that. Shoot, OU could not only have won, but won by double digits if not for their pathetic, no-good, lousy, high-schoolin, ridiculous make-up, lame brain calls.
But seriously. Kudos to the Cyclones for absolutely shredding the Sooner defense. Never saw on OU defense that bad since, oh, maybe 1997? Welle, and whoever's turn it was to throw her the ball, absolutely schooled OU, AGAIN. How many dadgum times I'm I going to have to watch OU get beat that way by ISU? Well, it can't be more than two more times if OU plays them in the Big 12 Tourney and the NCAA Tourney - cuz Welle will just have to graduate! I think I may just show up for that joyous occasion http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
Add to that OU was cold for the first 25-30 minutes and it was LOOK OUT BELOW........... Truly a bad game on OU's part. I was kind of wondering after the emotional game at Baylor if OU could go on the road and do it again in just 3 days. I thought they could. They had seem to rise up to every occasion so far this season. One thing Coach Coale might have told them in the lockeroom after the game is having to play a Baylor and an Iowa State in the span of 4 days is exactly what they'll have to do to make the Final Four. Gotta stay consistent.
Good to see ISU rebound from that A&M debacle. If I had to choose a loss - this would be my first choice (besides the fact OU's never beat ISU in the Coale era). This was on the road against a Top 14 or Top 9 team (whatever poll you like).
Next up Texas. Should be another great one.

Yep. ISU will beat OU in the Big XII tournament finals and again in the National Championshp game. Mark my words! http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/wink.gif
Schooner, the Cyclones emphatically deserved to win, and are now 2-3 in the conference versus OU's 4-1. You guys have a tough road in front of you to catch - specifically - the KSU bunch, who I think may be the best team in the conference this year.
I take one exception from your comments, though. There hasn't been one single OU poster that has suggested that the officials made the difference in this game.
We have heard the complaints about bad officiating from almost everyone this year, so it shouldn't be a surprise that even an OU fan complains about same.
The Cyclones won fair and square, and I doubt that you will get any single OU fan to disagree with me.
Congratulations to the Cyclones on their very fine win!

The ref thought asst. coach Jan Ross was shouting something at him when she was shouting at an OU player. That's the first technical on Jan in her collegiate coaching career (6 years) I believe.

Yes and yes. If OU would have played like they did at Baylor at least this would have been a close game.

Schooner didn't make his sarcasm obvious enough. He's just poking fun at everyone who blames the officials for a loss, which everyone is prone to do occasionally.

I have made a firm commitment to not criticize the officiating....
they always suck, they will probably always suck when officiating games against OU. What good does it do anyway?......it certainly doesn't make the officials any better or at least hasn't in the 5 years that I have been critical of the officiating crew.
http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif
They were pretty bad tonite.......I don't think you are supposed to grab players from behind to get the ball like 'Roz did http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gif by the same token, an OU player FINALLY stands in front of an ISU player to stop them from driving to the basket, didn't do any good though, we got the blocking charge. I guess it all evens out in the end.

I may be mistaken, but didn't the majority of Welle's points come in the second half with Caton Hill on the bench in foul trouble and Shannon Selmon guarding her?.....not that Caton could be that effective the last 4 minutes with 4 fouls.
Schooner, a note specifically to you..
No doubt, we have been inundated on this board lately by criticism of the officiating in conference play, and I have sure taken note of that.

Great win for ISU. Its good to see them break out again. What a conference! Course my selfish little heart hopes OU gets immediately back on track and beats UT on Saturday.

For historical reference:
1/2/1999 (81-60): 26 minutes, 9 points (4-4 FG), 6 reb (4 off). Not a bad game, with Frese (26 pts), Taylor (16), and Francis (16) shouldering most of the load.
2/8/2000 (71-56): 25 minutes, 12 points (5-6 FG), 9 reb (3 off). Megan Taylor led ISU with 25 points.
1/6/2001 (81-79): 35 minutes, 18 points (6-12 FG), 7 reb (1 off). All 5 starters scored in double digits, with Angie leading the way.
3/10/2001 (68-65): 28 minutes, 13 points (5-8 FG), 3 reb (2 off). This was the game Megan Taylor was absolutely incredible and scored 28.
1/15/2002 (82-66): 34 minutes, 28 points (10-11 FG), 9 reb (1 off). Welle's only missed FG was a three.
Certainly none of these are bad games. Welle has been her usual consistent self against OU. She's stepped up when needed.
OU is now 30-7 in their last 37 Big XII games. Four of the seven losses are to ISU.

That's an interesting factoid. Plus Iowa State stopped OU's 18 game win streak in the Big 12. And its 11 game road win streak in the Big 12. I think it's 11 - I'm too tired to look up exactly how long it was. It dated back to 1999-2000 season.
Other ISU Stats:
Welle now has 1812 career points, #2 all time for ISU. #1 is Megan Taylor with 1866. Welle already broke Megan's career rebounding record. She'll likely break the scoring record in 3 or 4 more games.
Gahan now has 1108 points, good for #10 all-time at ISU. She's 50 points out of 9th, 93 out of 8th, and 176 out of 7th. If she keeps up her current scoring average, she'll score about 200 more points this season.
Side note: Were any other ISU fans thinking about the end of the game @OU last season? I was very afraid of a repeat of that once we got a big lead. I didn't assume victory this time until less than a minute was left.

Great quote from Coale:
``We went with our man defense and tried to find a way back in and they went inside to Welle and we didn't know how to guard her,'' Coale said. ``Still don't know. Got any ideas? E-mail.''

About the techinal. I was seated a couple of rows behind the Oklahoma bench and clearly heard the assistant coach yell "TRAVEL"!!!! I did think it was a quick whistle but Coale and the assistants had been riding the officials the whole first half (never let up in the 2nd half either).
About Welle scoring, she got most of her points when the Sooners went to a man to man and it really wouldn't have mattered who was guarding her. The best way to shut Welle down is to pack in the zone and pray that the outside shooters are not hitting.
I think this game had a record for most jump balls called!

I will NEVER forget last year's game. I mentioned to the guy sitting next to me when we had an 18-point lead with about 2:30 left: "I think we're going to win this one."
But I didn't feel CONFIDENT until around the 1:12 mark. I figured that even for a hot OU, 72 seconds would probably not be enough to make up 16 points.

Thing was, OU was starting to get hot at the end of the game but could only match ISU bucket for bucket cuz defensively we just had no answer last night. Caufield was playing out of her mind there for a stretch in the 2nd half.

All things considered, OU is still an OUTSTANDING team, in fact Bill Fennelly quoted them as "the best team in the league," which they very well may be....with K-State right behind. I understand why Coale is angry, but OU will rebound just like we (ISU) did. And as for the officiating...well...the ISU people booed the officials at the half, we thought they were so awful. Guess the OU people thought the same thing. Personally, I thought it was a bad double-foul that was called, when it was very clear in my Cyclone eyes that it was a blatent OU foul. http://hoopscoop.net/ubb/smile.gifAnyway, my point here is that OU has nothing to be ashamed of, they are a wonderful team, and we all know how this conference can go.

I am a 10 Lady Longhorn season ticket holder and I'm convinced that the officiating in this conference is just bad. It doesn't seem to favor one team over another or one style of play over another - it seems to be randomly awful. My take is that different refs have different definitions of fouls in the women's game, creating a situation where everything is subjective and what is okay on one end of the court is a foul at the other. Hopefully they will work their way into agreeing on calls.
